But from the Pens' point of view, don't you think they might have the Sabres over a barrel? The Sabres can't let Bylsma too slip away, and Pegula certainly has a reputation of someone who's willing to overspend (in this case, being willing to give up the highest of the picks).

They can let him slip away.  Actually, they should be making a show of courting Richardson.

So if enough lazy journalists repeat the same thing enough, it becomes true?

Here's the press release from the team.

The Penguins were careful with what they did here. They're entitled to the benefit of the rule, as distasteful as that may seem.

Careful?  How can that be? The rule did not even exist at the time.

They were being "polite" by saying that he was "relieved" which is a euphemism for being fired.  Here is the press release you link:

Dan Bylsma has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Jim Rutherford.

Bylsma had coached the Penguins for five-plus seasons, compiling a record of 252-117-32 and leading the team to the Stanley Cup in 2009.

“Dan is a good man and a good coach, but I thought we needed a change in direction moving forward,” Rutherford said. “I have no doubt that he will go on to be a head coach in the National Hockey League and have success. The search for our new head coach will begin immediately.”

“We want to thank Dan for everything he has done for the Penguins organization,” co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle said in a joint statement. “He’ll always be remembered as a big part of Pittsburgh sports history for his role in our Stanley Cup championship in 2009. We wish all the best to him and his family.”

Assistant coaches Tony Granato, Todd Reirden and Jacques Martin, goaltending coach Mike Bales and video coordinator Andy Saucier will be evaluated by Rutherford and the incoming head coach. Rutherford will evaluate the remainder of the hockey operations staff.

I wonder how this sits with the NHLPA. To have a RFA market, there needs to be a certain amount of liquidity when it comes to players and picks.

If coaches and administration are going to tie up picks, then that really dries up any RFA liquidity and the signing of offer sheets.

Some of teams that supported defined compensation didn't believe it would apply to "fired" coaches/GMs. But it does.

Note: Told that compensation issue on the Bylsma #Sabres #Pens issue is between clubs at this point... Not determined at NHL level.

Yep.  Pittsburgh is getting help by getting Bylsma off their books; Murray should tell them to take that 3rd rounder and shove it.

See article linked in Post #58 above.

It's been confirmed the Oilers had to compensate the Bruins for Chiarelli.

Shouldn't they also have to compensate the Sharks for McLellan?

Wasn't deBoer still under contract to the Devils?

Isn't Rutherford making enemies by asking for compensation for Bylsma, but not for Shero?

Finally, weren't  a lot of officials pissed at the Sabres about the Tim Murray search and that was one of the reasons this rule was instituted in the first place?

Words matter. They continued to employ him so that they could have some measure of control over where he went.

Never easy in Buffalo is it....

Well said.

I dream of the day visiting this board isn't like reading lecture notes and having to do homework.

A real hockey team, real games to discuss. Please, soon!

Point being, you can't have been fired when you're still on your employer's payroll. Bylsma wasn't fired. Other terms and conditions of his employment changed - namely, his duties.

Considering Pittsburgh stellar record of hitting of draft picks in the later rounds over the last ten years, I'm not sure this even matters.

I'd love to revisit this to see what future superstar they hit on with one of our 3rd round picks.
