dejeanneret Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 Would you consider mirroring the number of the Great One bold? Balsy? Arrogant? Who cares? I think with him and McDavid being labeled the next two "generational" talents, I think him doing so would be news. I also think 99 puts a spotlight on him. Another player with lesser potential..not so much. Eichel? I think that would be a huge statement about the kids confidence and would heighten the expectations the league would have for him. Thoughts? Quote
Robviously Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) Well, he's not allowed to. So there's that. The NHL retired 99 league-wide to honor Wayne. Edited April 20, 2015 by Robviously Quote
pi2000 Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 no. not a chance. 99 is retired across all teams. period. Quote

Taro T Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 Doesn't matter what we think of it. When Gretzky retired, the NHL retired 99 leaguewide. Quote
RustySabre Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 Number 99 has been retired by the NHL. Quote

No reason for 91 except it's a top line forwardr's # (worn when 9 and 19 aren't available) and pretty sure he'd be the 1st Sabre to wear it. Edited April 20, 2015 by Taro T Quote
IKnowPhysics Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 If I remember right, Jersey retired the Gretzky in NHL 99. Quote
Doohicksie Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 Hey, was 99 retired by the league? ;) Quote
That Aud Smell Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 i see that people have made it abundantly clear that the league retired #99. in terms of eichel's number, i heard this being discussed on WGR this morning. he wore 9 at BU. his twitter handle references 11 (not available, obviously). someone mentioned that he's worn 15 for the U.S. so, it sounds like it'll be 15. jimiVbaby Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 It'd be great! No one of significance has ever worn that number so it's certainly Jack Eichel's ball to run with. What are everyone's thoughts on possibly # 999? No player has yet to venture out into the 100's but I feel like Jack has the machismo and moxie to take that step! Quote
IKnowPhysics Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) Well, if he can't wear #99, he can always wear #00. Or maybe 2, 7, 11, 14, 16, 18, or 39. Edited April 20, 2015 by IKnowPhysics Quote
Sabres Fan in NS Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 I think Kanesie will let Eichsie have #9. Kanesie will go with #29 (as in 2 9s). Quote
X. Benedict Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 99 is a girls' number......like from Get Smart. Quote

dejeanneret Posted April 20, 2015 Author Report Posted April 20, 2015 Well, he's not allowed to. So there's that. The NHL retired 99 league-wide to honor Wayne. That's right....forgot that. Yeah, 15 makes sense then. Quote
