Why is it so absurd that EDM won the draft lottery?  Because they've had 3 #1 picks in the last 5 years.  All those picks (and also a #3) were spent on forwards.  They've got plenty.  What they don't have plenty of is defense.  The Sabres can help them out there.  Trade some defensemen (anyone but Risto) and some picks for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, for instance.

When GMTM said, "We know who we like" and "We've done our homework" I think what he means is they looked at all the draft scenarios and have figured out what trades would make sense in the aftermath.  So he's already got a plan of who he wants to target on various teams, including EDM.  He's probably way ahead of us.

If there's one rule I have in hockey it's to almost never trade defensemen. And we don't have enough right now, it's an area we are not stocked up in. We will have four forwards in the line up on opening night that were not there at end of season and they are all good to well above average. If anything we need another defenseman

This could go down like the Philip Rivers, Eli Manning deal. Edmonton takes McDavid, Buffalo takes Eichel then a deal is swung on the draft floor, something like Eichel, 2015 and 2016 first for McDavid probably gets it done if It's widely known McDavid won't sign with Edmonton they lose their leverage. But this whole thing falls apart if Eichel won't sign with Edmonton or states his intentions to return to school if he ends up there.

actually  have a better answer to this question.  Why would you want to trade for Connor McDavid when you are getting Jack Eichel.

Because it might not take much since Edmonton loses their leverage if he refuses to sign with them.

DING DING DING, we have a winner. Eichel is going to be a great pro. We tanked to get one of the top 2, mission accomplished, move on

why is this even a thread? its not happening. Oilers can not trade the next great Canadian player, he is worth more $$ to the Oilers than anything the Sabres could give hockey wise.

He could be worth Billions with a B. If he's the next Crosby or better the financial implications are hard to measure. It changes everything.
