I think I would actually be ok with Disco Dan. He's not my top choice by any means, but I think he could potentially be a decent fit. The Pens players did seem to repsond very positively to him for a long time. He also did a good job during the year Pittsburgh went into the playoffs without Sid.

Could Edmonton take itself out of the race for Babcock? Would certainly take one strong suitor out of the mix...

1) One of the twists in NHL coaching circles is EDM is pursuing Todd McLellan even though Mike Babcock is testing the market...

Maybe they already know where they stand with Babcock? Or he's too expensive?

If they end up going the McLellan route, I wonder how much of it is related to the salary Babcock is rumored to command.

2) Babcock is going to the Worlds Monday and not back until the 17th, and hearing EDM working on getting something done with Canada's coach

3) Oilers would not comment, although there was apparently a lengthy meeting today with Todd Nelson/Peter Chiarelli. We'll see where it goes

No way Nelson is a legitimate candidate. Might be smart on Edmonton's part to scoop up what might be the second hottest name out there.

What's his playoff record with the post-Lidstrom Wings?

Extremely similar to Bylsma's when Sidney isn't there. ;)

(Things that make you go hmmmmm. :p)

Very interesting development. I wonder if Babcock has told certain teams they are out or is it the impression McLellan made on Eberle and Hall as the Edmonton Sun has been reporting?

I would love for the Sabres to land Babcock as their next head coach. He's a great coach and IMO the best available right now.

I do think the weight of expectation that a guy like that could bring could be a little troublesome, in that I hope the fans won't expect too much too soon from our young team. I think Babcock is a great choice to help lead our young guys to contention, but it is still going to take a few years.

Very well said, and that is my concern.

Babcock is a good coach. Lindy Ruff was a solid coach. It's all about value and synergy.

I would compare Babcock to an NFL coach like Andy Reid or Mike McCarthy.

I'd compare Bylsma to a guy like Bill Cowher or Pete Carrol. There's a higher chance he can flame out with a roster but a better chance to win the whole thing.

It just seems like 99 out of 100 guys are in line to meet Kate Upton, while Sophia Vegara is sitting alone in the corner.

For the last 6 years Crosby/Malkin by far.

Ok...question....if we are going to praise Babcock for regular season results and failure in the playoffs, how many regular season games in the 5 years after the Stanley Cup win did Bylsma have BOTH Crosby and Malkin in the lineup at the same time???????????????

Which corner and can you point me to it?

You don't want to see that pointer......

I appreciate the "revisit your request" response. "Careful whatcha ask for, boy ..."!

Right. They wanted a coach with experience with a stacked roster.

Didn't he come within 2 minutes of losing to Ted Nolan who had a teenage goalie and gave a 50 year old defenseman 40 minutes? :)

Bylsma.....as many Cups as Babcock in less than half the games coached.........

Bylsma......a better playoff series record than Babcock.........

Bylsma.....had Crosby and Malkin together for a total of 200 regular games......Babcock had Lidstrom, Datsyuk and Zetterberg for more time.....

Bylsma....wins Cup with Marc-Adres Fleury........Babcock with Dominik Hasek..........

Bylsma won his Cup..................OVER Babcock................

I think I may nickname Babcock......"The Holland Tulip".

Overvalued in an irrational mania and bound to come crashing to earth......

Will Terry make Tim buy the bulb?

I like her with the extra 12-15 lbs. she had on.

I also think she is a good enough sport that she would let you motorboat her for charity......

@MatthewWGR: Gotta say, conversations I've had with hockey people over the last 48 hours have driven my Babcock-to-Buffalo confidence meter up by a lot

Matthew Coller is the Web Director as well as the Morning Show/Hockey Hotline Producer for WGR. In addition he covers the Amerks Home Games as well.

He gives thoughtful analysis and is one the smartest people working for the Station.

He is also a freelance writer for ESPN Insider and has developed contacts in many hockey circles.

He says DET and BUF are the front runners with Eichel giving the edge to the Sabres. Risto is a very big plus for the Sabres as well.

That may be true, but you also have to factor in all the comments people within hockey say about both of them.

Babcock is known for being one of the most hard working coaches whom has the ability to coach young and old while somehow always keeping Detroit playoff bound.

Byslma is known to be a good motivator but his ability to strategize is questionable.

Olympics wise Babcock's victories aren't huge pluses since it was with a stacked Canadian team both times, but getting all those stars to play nice has to count for at least something. As for

Bylsma's US team in the past Olympics, for a guy known to be a motivator was rather sad in the Bronze medal game.

Really though my biggest concern with Bylsma is based on the tendencies of the rosters he fielded. The problem is we don't know to what extent was it Bylsma, and to what extent it was the GM's fault. Pittsburgh after they won their Cup seemed to rely on Crosby and Malkin too much. Rather than them being the key pieces to the skater core, they were the core. Chicago is a far more effectively crafted roster, while having a very similar situation in having a pair of elite players, yet while Pittsburgh actually has a generational player, they've done far less than Chicago overall. My best guess as to why that is, stems from whom each of them play with. Aside from Chris Neil who was traded for and then away, they seem overly obsessed with the effect Crosby has on a middle to great player. Pittsburgh needs an Evander Kane-like power forward or a Marian Hossa-two way type of player to play with Crosby, not random guys whom become good due to Crosby. Hell, Matt Moulson would of been a nice pick up for them since he's not purely a product of Tavares. What Pittsburgh seems to do is the following....

If Crosby is worth 100pts and you need 200 pts for a great 1st line, they merely find two 50pts players and call it a day. Rather than going out and finding another top 3 who can actually help Crosby some too thus making a far better line in the end. I don't know though who's at fault for this.

Hey now.

On the radio the other day he stated he gave the Sabres a 1 out of 10 chance, now he says its a 5. Fingers Crossed

I just hope we aren't all sitting here 2 years from now yelling "the emperor has no clothes!"

Good deal.

I will admit the US team mailed it in for the bronze.

Instead of 200 scouts, why doesn't Pegula try and hire ALL the top coaches for the staff? If he can give $40 million to Lieno and Ehrhoff for a few mediocre years, why can't he hire Babcock, Bylsma, Torts, Carlyle, McClellan, etc.....give them each $5 million......put their heads together,,,and keep them out of the job pool? If I had $4 billion, I'd pay Torts $5 million just to hang with me on a pool raft, drinking rum runners and smoking cohibas.....

It's a combo of the Buffalo media machine and the "It'll all be worth it!" fanbase, but when you really look at the qualifications and results......

Who would you rather have.....Crosby/Malkin/Satan/Fleury/Gonchar/Letang  or Datsyuk/Lidstrom/Hasek/Chelios/Zetterberg/Franzen?

What's his playoff record with the post-Lidstrom Wings?

Am I the only shield who guards the realms of men?

Am I the only watcher on the wall?

The charismatic dangerous one repeatedly asserts that Hasek got Babcock his only cup and no one calls him on it?

It was Osgood.

Dominik finally hit the wall early in the playoffs that year and Babcock pulled the trigger with Osgood.

That's what our new coach (that's right!) had the guts and the brains to do.

Oh yeah baby!

Right now TP/TB and Babcock's agent are exchanging proposals.  TP's offer is at least 30% higher than Philly's.

Press conference Tuesday at noon.

On HNIC tonight Elliott Friedman said one of the most important factors for Babcock is to know he will have a good working relationship with the GM and the owner. I feel like that is where we have such a huge advantage over other teams now. The Pegula's are amazing people and know how to close out deals.
