He's played 22 games. Will he show it? Likely. But the kid hasn't accomplished too much yet.

But the kid hasn't accomplished too much yet.How much of him have you watched? He's over a PPG and seems to have generated more chances than his draft peers in half of the games. I'm only exaggerating a little bit. Kid is ridiculously good. And for people who have been heckling him for his collarbone, Jack's would have snapped if he had hit that same rut and had two flyers ride him into the boards as well. McDavid is better, possibly by no small amount. I'm totally fine with Eichel, it was always the expected outcome, but... Let us have the clavical. That's all I ask. It's a bit of semantics. McDavid is a truly generational *talent*. Other worldly. Beyond anything we've seen since maybe 99. But, yeah. He isn't yet a generational player because he hasn't accomplished enough. And if he keeps sustaining serious injuries (hasn't it been three multi-month absences dating to 2013?), his path toward generational player status will be uncertain. He broke his hand fighting a guy because he misfired and hit the boards, and he's not going to be fighting at this level, and had two guys ride him shoulder-first into the boards at a speed that would break any other human being's collarbone. I don't think injuries are going to be an issue for him, though we do have to let time show that to us for sure.

I don't need anymore time to pass judgment. People are still butt hurt about losing the lottery. Which I get, I wanted McDavid, as most did. He is the real deal. Regardless of the injury concerns, he has all worldly speed and reads the open ice amazingly well. When the Oilers win the lottery this year, the NHL will finally stop this rouse and adopt something that stops a team from having a certain number of 1st overall picks within a year period. I'm definitely not heckling him for his collarbone. I have not seen a lot live; I have seen highlights and I just assume that because they're highlights, they're naturally cherry-picked. And if he keeps sustaining serious injuries (hasn't it been three multi-month absences dating to 2013?), his path toward generational player status will be uncertain. McDavid is 100% a generational talent. He has the talent to be up there with the greats, as you say. There is still the matter of actually accomplishing it, of course. But the talent is there. I do take issue with the bolded, and I don't mean to direct this towards your post specifically though, as I have seen this multiple places. Do people forget how good Mario Lemiuex was? He was insanely good. A lot of people that know a lot about hockey say that Lemiuex was more purely talented than even the Great One was. So to say McDavid's talent is above Mario's is I think unfair, and far too premature.
That Aud Smell
I get all that, Thorny. I almost typed 99/66, but McDavid's game is so different than that of 66. Not for nothing: Mario's greatness was cut a bit short by wear and tear.
Thorner
I get all that, Thorny. I almost typed 99/66, but McDavid's game is so different than that of 66. Not for nothing: Mario's greatness was cut a bit short by wear and tear. Good point, McDavid and Lemieux have styles so different it's hard to compare how they affect the game as they do it differently. McDavid and Gretzky are vastly different too, so comparing their styles also gets dicey. McDavid to me compares decently to Crosby in terms of style. McDavid may have an even higher potential. Crosby is another who has battled with staying healthy at times in his career. Crosby's PPG is among and above some of the all-time greats so matching that in today's even lower scoring era will be an accomplishment for McDavid. I certainly think he can, as his talent is off the charts. Edited February 21, 2016 by Thorny
Crusader1969
Austin Matthews 1G 2A in Swiss League today: http://www.sihf.ch/de/game-center/game/#/20161105071281 Secondary assist on 1st Goal, Primary on their 3rd and scores a tap in for their 4th goal. Final 5-2 Here is the Patrik Laine OT winner from yesterday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyjjRwQt5G8 just a sample of why some (not many but some) have ranked him ahead of Matthews. WildCard
Awesome shot. Why the gold helmet? Everytime I see those jerseys like that I get nervous the NHL will end up that way
