WildCard Posted February 2, 2016 Report Posted February 2, 2016 Really nice article on why Matthews is as good as he is http://thehockeywriters.com/auston-matthews-is-still-number-1/ Quote
Crusader1969 Posted February 4, 2016 Author Report Posted February 4, 2016 ISS Feb rankings came out yesterday: http://www.isshockey.com/iss-top-30-february-2016/ Corey Pronman from ESPN came out this morning. SInce the rankings is for Insiders only I'll list the Top 10: 1) Matthews 2) Laine - of course, my personal fav. 3) Puljujarvi 4) Keller - (Highest I've seen him ranked). I've never seen him play but is putting up some huge #'s 5) Tkachuk 6) Nylander 7) Chychrun - seems to be falling but definitely would be intriguing for a Team like the Sabres needing a LHD who could be paired with Risto 8) Joilevi - Another LHD - could we see a top pair of Finnish D in the Sabres future? 9) Dubois - just started paying attention to him and I'm impressed by his size, speed combination 10) Fabbro - Sergachev is ranked 22 by Pronman. Lowest I've seen him ranked though Pronman did give him a pretty good write-up. Quote
Crusader1969 Posted February 4, 2016 Author Report Posted February 4, 2016 seems pretty set in stone after hearing who the top 3 guys are after hearing Murray on WGR. Not sure of the order but its definitely the guys playing overseas who will be picks 1, 2 and 3 on the Sabres draft board. Quote

Not sure of the order but its definitely the guys playing overseas who will be picks 1, 2 and 3 on the Sabres draft board. Darn, I wanted Chychrun. Oh well, maybe we won't be drafting top 3. If we do, the three guys it seems Murray ranks at the top are definitely great prospects. Quote
Thorner Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 Isn't it nice that the first three slots are lottery slots now? We don't need to finish dead last to have a chance. It'd be great if we could benefit from the last year of the old rules, then the first year of the new rules. True, but the new system is only good for us this year if we don't finish bottom 3. In fact, even then, say we finish 4th last, we could hypothetically fall to 7th. So I'm not sure it's good news, we'll have to wait and see. In general, it's more beneficial than the old system the better you are. More chances to move up. Quote
pi2000 Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 Forgive my ignorance, but why didn't Chychrun make Canada's recent World Junior team? GO SABRES!!! 17 year old defenseman rarely make Canada's world junior team. That, and he was born in Florida. Quote

pi2000 Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 Really nice article on why Matthews is as good as he is http://thehockeywriters.com/auston-matthews-is-still-number-1/ The one thing that really bothers me about Matthews is that he didn't complete his academic requirements to attend college.... namely finish High School (he was a junior in High School last year when he played for the NTDP and choose not to take additional classes so he could graduate and attend college in the fall). What does that say about what he's got between the ears? IMO, he's more likely to make other poor life decisions in the future. Quote
pi2000 Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 Not that I advocate not finishing high school but he identified his career path and made moves to maximize that career choice. In a case like his, where barring injury it's a certainty that he's going to be selected at the top of the draft why does he need his HS diploma? If he gets catastrophically hurt getting a GED isn't exactly difficult and I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest he has taken out a substantial insurance policy to cover such a circumstance. Shows lack of character... when the going gets tough, he takes the path of least resistance. Quote
Hoss Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 Shows lack of character... when the going gets tough, he takes the path of least resistance. You've got some of the worst takes I've seen in the history of this board. What in the world is this? He just left to play overseas thousands of miles from home. Hardly the "path of least resistance." Quote

Hoss Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 Did we ever learn why he went over? Just curious It just seems like he wanted to, ultimately. May have been money or the challenge. Quote
WildCard Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 There's a flip side to that though, rather than playing in the CHL or in college and lighting up children he went to play vs. full grown men in Europe.I'll never by the full grown men argument. It's still a bigger rink and a less physical league. Less physical than juniors? Idk. But he's not exactly playing in the NCAA or tr AHL Quote
Thorner Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 It just seems like he wanted to, ultimately. May have been money or the challenge. His favorite movie is Eurotrip? Quote

Thorner Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 I mean, that is an awesome movie I feel like almost everyone I've talked to dislikes that movie. I think it's hilarious and better than Road Trip. Quote
TrueBlueGED Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 It just seems like he wanted to, ultimately. May have been money or the challenge. I'd assume it was the money. Isn't he getting like a half million? Beats the pants off a year of college or juniors. Quote

Derrico Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) Not sure but Michael Dal Colle didn't make it either. He was cut twice in a row and was a top 5 pick. Not sure what that means. Canada's defense certainly wasn't rock solid without Chychrun. They allowed 3.6 goals per game which was their worst result since 1992. Dal Colle isn't that good of a player. Great shot on the PP but very one dimensional and not great at board battles. Also disappears from time to time when the moment gets big. Edited February 5, 2016 by Derrico Quote
dudacek Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 If you look at good fits and the Sabres record in the lottery, I'm pinning my hopes on Juolevi. Quote

pi2000 Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) There's a flip side to that though, rather than playing in the CHL or in college and lighting up children he went to play vs. full grown men in Europe. Average age of NCAA players is 23, avg age of freshman is +20. Those aren't children. He dropped out of high school to make $$$$$$ in Europe. It shows you what he values most, and that's money. I see a lot of Johnny Manziel in him. Edited February 5, 2016 by pi2000 Quote
