What the hell? Eichel's on the third line now essentially.

Oh he is. I thought for a second that maybe the order was just weird, but not with Ennis on that second line. Eichel just got demoted, and Gionta got the biggest promotion since Monica Lewinsky

I'll post them again so people don't have to go back and forth between pages

New look #Sabres lines: Moulson-O'Reilly-Gionta Ennis-Girgensons-Reinhart Larsson-Eichel-McGinn Deslauriers-Legwand-Foligno

Moving Jack away from the 'Nucks big possession line, let him have the puck more, even if he ends up with fewer minutes overall.

Good call.  That's probably the reason.  And it's smart.

Not really sure what you mean here. We have last change anyways, so wouldn't that not matter?

I love Moulson gettiing up on the first, and finally taking Ennis away from O'Reilly. Reinhart gets great line-mates, there should be absolutely no excuse for him to play poor, and that second line could be amazing. The 4th is finally a 4th again, but....Jack is shackled, and now gets less ice time. This is a very simple fix. Switch Gionta out for Eichel, and make Eichel the 1st line center and Larsson the 3rd. Boom, done. Perfect lines.

The Sedins are going to get their 20 minutes, and control the puck. Put ROR's line out there against them, then put Jack out against lesser competition.

So 1st line against 1st line. What does that have to do with Jack going from the 2nd to the 3rd?

purposefully matching him up against the burrows/horvat line. He'll dominate.

I'm guessing here, otherwise, it doesn't make any sense.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I was just genuinely confused.

But you're right, it makes no sense. I didn't catch the full game, but many in the GDT said he had his best game overall. Nothing from Gionta deserves a promotion, and nothing from Larsson shows he deserves to be on Eichel's wing. Match-ups must be the only thing I can understand. More of a 1 -2a-2b-4 combination

We have the second change against the Canucks, though.  We can match up Eichel against any line we want.  Why give him McGinn and Larsson instead of Moulson and Foligno/Ennis/Zemgus/Samson?

Because he doesn't need them. There is a reason he doesn't have any assists.

Your first comment, above, was insightful.

Your second comment, quoted here, may be as well. Intriguing.

Exactly, thank you. It might make some sense on the road, but not at home.

And seriously, Gionta has to stop getting 19 minutes per night. He looks like a guy who completely fallen off a cliff--would not surprise me at all if we're looking at the forward version of Craig Rivet.

Jack needs to use his linemates more, I don't doubt that.  You can see when he makes a dangerous pass in the crease that his linemates usually aren't expecting it.  But the real reason that he doesn't have any assists is because 3 or 4 golden opportunities were all squandered.

But does that mean that HD shouldn't try to give Jack better linemates?

He doesn't have any assists, so he doesn't need better wingers?

He had better wingers, he wasn't using them? Reinhardt and Ennis need someone who will open up space.

Maybe the move isn't about Jack, maybe it's about Zemgus.

(I'm out there on this one, just pursuing the thought process)

If you want Jack to use his wingers more, giving him wingers that properly complement his game and can finish a scoring chance would be the correct approach. Giving him wingers who can't do that will only serve to reinforce the "Jack against the world" approach.

I get what you're saying whiskey, that Jack can create offense on his own, but HD should be trying to push the right buttons to help him create chemistry and use his linemates better.

Jack isn't the only player he has to develop.

Put the shovel down, we won't begrudge you

Who is being more effectively developed with these lines?

Zemgus and Samson working together is not a bad idea for both of them, especially with Ennis on the ice. They both have significantly better mates than they did against TB.
