Sammy Watkins takes on leadership role: "We need to forget about anybody’s feelings. We need to call people out' - BN Blitz (via http://ble.ac/teamstream-)http://teamstre.am/1QDArkq

Sammy talking a good game here.

Is he right or wrong?

Seems to me he's telling Mario et al to stop trying to pass the buck to Rex and the defensive coaches. I mean, I know I'm a Rex apologist and all, but Mario whined today about using defensive substitutions. He's been in the league how long? Personnel matching is as common as snapping the ball. Defense has been bitching all year about schemes and usage. I don't recall the offense wing nearly as unhappy last season with Hackett running the show

Our defense gets paid the most and has a ton of vets, they should act like it.

Isn't this exactly what Mario looked like his last season in Houston?

Not really. He had five sacks in five games prior to an injury. It was the first year they asked him to play OLB. He did mention how he wasn't sure how he felt about the position switch but this is another level of Mario. He's not wrong by content but likely is wrong by when/where he said it.

I think he knows that there are several people in Buffalo want him out so he's being defensive. He'll be a coveted FA.

Something I never got with the Ryan hire.    You had a former HC as DC , who got your defense in the top 5 of the league and was one of the only good things from last season.   You hire Ryan , offcourse that DC won't stay because to me it looked like he got passed over for the HC job.

And this year your defense is in shambles, not that i ever watched a Bills game, I could only stand to watch 1 quarter this year , to boring and to slow of a game for me.

The whole thing just makes no sense.  Last year was the best defense we've seen since the Wade Phillips days.  So.... we hire a defensive head coach who completely changes the scheme???

My college team (Virginia Tech) did the opposite.  For years they've had a great defense and no offense.  So they hired an offensive guy as a head coach and kept the defensive staff.  Makes logical sense.  Fans are happy.

The whole thing could get goofier if Whaley gets fired and Pegula hires a "football czar." Who hires the GM, Pegula or the czar? Whom does the GM report to? And does the GM get to fire Ryan and name his own coach? (Ryan, who reports to Pegula.)

I don't think Schwartz would've been a good choice and I think Rex was a bad choice. You absolutely could've found somebody to pair with Schwartz, though. Whaley's favorite, Hue Jackson, wanted to keep Schwartz.

Whaley, the GM, didn't get to hire his own coach?

The notion that the GM hires the coach is becoming less prevalent as these franchises become billion dollar corporations.

I'll say this much, I'd love to know how Hue Jackson would have used Watkins (other than the obvious "more").

Nope. I think there's normally a combination of voices with the football people being the most important. I don't even think Whaley was involved in the decision, though. He was in the room, but he never had a say. I have no legitimate evidence of this. Just an opinion I hold here.

I still think Whaley should be let go.

It would be quintessential Bills if Whaley's desires were the right moves, but he was overruled on them, and ends up getting fired for moves he didn't agree with being forced upon him.

And I still don't think he should although at this point I wouldn't be opposed to a complete gutting. You have plenty of facts necessary to make a case for firing Whaley without making up facts not in evidence.

In my opinion, Whaley put together a roster good enough to make the playoffs but was unable to foresee needing to have personnel for a 3-4 defense one year after building a wide 9 defense.

I don't think he's going to be fired for the hiring of Rex Ryan...

But if his preferred alternative (Hue Jackson, keeping Schwartz) would have resulted in say a 10 win season and playoffs (not arguing it would have, just throwing out a hypothetical), he'd be getting a contract extension, right?. So he may not be fired directly for hiring Rex, but indirectly, yea. Again, just a fun hypothetical to think about.

Just because I don't have a ton of evidence doesn't mean I'm "making it up." You have no evidence if you say Whaley made the decision to hire Rex. Is that "making it up?" No, it's an assumption... I get the feeling he didn't make the hire.

Also the defense stuff is hogwash. Most of the players on this defense played in the 3-4 under Pettine. He wouldn't have had to tweak much. That's not my issue with him, though.

We have no way of knowing what his desired candidate would've done. It's a fun hypothetical but it doesn't acquit Whaley. Edited by Hoss

There is a big difference between saying he didn't hire Are. And saying he didn't have a say.
