86 and I still wouldn't cross the man. Tough as nails. Hope he recovers but at his advanced age it'll be a struggle. Get well Mr. Hockey.

I hope he is comfortable and surrounded by his family. Mr. Hockey deserves this. I'm sending my hugs to Gordie and family. I was lucky enough to see him play a game in BLFO when he was with Hartford. I just remember he was old and still was a better player then many on the ice. I'm sending my best Gordie.

Sad. Very advanced age and hope he can recover but he is in tough at this point.

Was it a hemorrhagic or a ischemic stroke? If it was hemorrhagic than the damage is roughly permanent.

Gordie has been in rough shape for a while now. I guess it's been a long time since he was "all there".

 

Always sad to see someone who was by all accounts superhuman finally succumb.

This is awesome!  Gordie Howe is pure class all the way.  An interviewer once asked him if they spoke to the referees the way "today's" players do (meaning with not much respect).  Gordie answered no.  He said that occasionally, if you gave a ref a dirty look after he called a penalty on you, he'd threaten you with a misconduct.  Of course, Gordie had a way of getting the message across. I don't remember the ref's name, but Gordie was royally ticked with a call the ref had just made.  On the way to the box, he told the ref he was the second best official in the NHL.  The ref asked who was the best and Gordie replied, "Everyone else".

I was there last night -he didn't make an appearance on ice - he sadly didn't look very good on the monitor.  I hope for the best for him.   I hope some part of him knew that the crowd loved and were celebrating his birthday. 

And I have to wonder if any of his dementia is due to all the years playing sans helmet?  There were no "concussion protocols" back in those days.   :(

Gordie really did not look well. In fact he barely looked there. Sad seeing someone who at one time embodied masculine virility and strength reduced to a shadow of his former self.
