mjd1001 Posted October 26, 2014 Report Posted October 26, 2014 There are examples on both sides of things, but I wanted to bring up another example of a guy who is turning into a superstar who really didn't show much of anything until 3 years after he was drafted: Ryan Johansen from Columbus. Drafted 4th overall in 2010, but C-Bus didn't rush him. He didn't even play with the club until the 2011-2012 season, and only totaled 9 goals and 12 assists in mostly a full season. The next year (2 years after draft year), he had 5 goals in the 40 games of the shortened season. Simply looking by the numbers, a lot of people might have said he as a bust as the 4th overall pick with only 14 total goals since getting drafted 3 years ago. So what has he done since? We all know last year he came up with 33 goals and was a plus player for the first time in his NHL career. This year, he has 5 goals and 6 assists through 8 games (about a 50 goal, 110 point pace...although as with most hot starters he is not likely to keep that up) Just because a player is drafted in the top 5, doesn't mean instant success. It may take 3+ years from their draft time to start producing as you want them to. Quote
Johnny DangerFace Posted October 26, 2014 Report Posted October 26, 2014 Yea the grigorenko and even armia calls of busts were silly. But in everyone's defense, we are much more focused on our prospects than we should be, so we most likely expect more faster and hold them to a higher standard. 17 and 18 year old kids aren't normally able to be productive in the nhl for 3-4 years. Hoss Posted October 26, 2014 Report Posted October 26, 2014 Johansen was one of the better defensuve forwards in the game his first two seasons according to advanced statistics. Quote
LGR4GM Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 (edited) Johansen was one of the better defensuve forwards in the game his first two seasons according to advanced statistics. True, and Grigorenko should be judged on what he does starting this year. As far as I am concerned, Mikhail Grigorenko has played 0 games in the NHL. Edited October 27, 2014 by LGR4GM Quote
