ubkev Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Can somebody explain the need for strict betting laws to me (as far as the need for them)? Other than sometimes untraceable movement of cash and bringing certain crowds together. Go watch The Last Boy Scout. That about covers it. Quote
X. Benedict Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 FBI Agent 1: So this Vanek guy, keeps flaring his nostrils in the interview, making this sucking in noise. FBI Agent 2: Yeah, hockey player, right? Quote

bcsaberks Posted July 23, 2014 Author Report Posted July 23, 2014 Laundering 76 Million Dolllars - is that lame too? That dry cleaner on Fairport Rd that's listed isn't THAT busy. My interpretation was that the $76m is over the course of the investigation, if so thats 12-15 months so about $5m per month. Or more likely figure it's heavy in late January, so maybe a slow month is 1-2M and January is $40m? If they were networked into a bunch of pro athletes I could see it. $100k here, $50k there on superbowl would add up nicely. So what's the over/under on whether he bet on the Sabres? Ink young Parinnello (who is representing a Ruff) told Breen yesterday that hockey betting is not involved, but it was pretty soft statement. "to the best of my knowledge..." or something like that (can't find the link). Quote
Eleven Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Betting is f'n stupid. Betting large amounts is stupid. I can spend $100 to make an entire college football season "interesting," though. (Not $100 per game; $100 for the season.) Quote

It's fun. I don't mind big betting to an extent. Risking your financial well-being is dumb. Having some extra cash after establishing a good income and using it to have some fun betting is fine. As to the case, what kind of dumbass takes out $13,000 in cash and doesn't think it will raise a couple of red flags? there's an enjoyable, somewhat vast middle ground of wagering that can be safely occupied, as Eleven and Glass suggest. I have zero interest in any formalized gambling of any kind and I never go into a casino by my own choice. I would not even be comfortable at a $5 blackjack table. that said, i very much enjoy paying a $100 entry fee to a fantasy football league and then talking sh!t all season long with my buddies about who's doing what. that league would not be as interesting if we did it for no money, or even a more nominal amount. it's just enough to keep things interesting, as Eleven so aptly notes. and with that said, when i won the league 2 years ago, i far more enjoyed the process of winning than i did the check that was sent to me for finishing at the top. I bet a friend that I would bear everyone in the over 50 bracket and for each minute ahead I finished, he had to buy me a beer. If I were to lose, I'd have to buy him two beers for every minute I lost by. I was supremely confident. After all, how could a bunch of near senior citizens beat me in the prime of my life? I proceeded to get beat in spectacular fashion. I ran a respectable 8.5 minute mile for the race...fastest 50+ runner hit around a 6.5 minute mile. So not only did I owe my buddy 12 beers, but I had to spend the rest of the day with my pre-race trash talk being thrown in my face. Quote
ubkev Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Laundering 76 Million Dolllars - is that lame too? Well the government obviously doesn't care too much about money laundering. They are allowing states to put casinos everywhere. Quote

Stoner Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 Of all the people who placed bets, why does Vanek, if he placed bets, get the perp walk and the attention? Would it be based on the amount of the bets? I mean, when you're a millionaire many times over, how much money does it take to make things interesting? Quote

I think we all know the answer to the first question. As to the second, it probably takes a lot more than a hundred bucks. Keep in mind that Europeans are not conditioned to think of gambling as something exotic or taboo, as we are. Quote
Stoner Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 I think we all know the answer to the first question. I wasn't clear. I know why he's getting the attention. He's a minor celebrity. Maybe it wasn't right to call it a perp walk, unless someone in the investigation tipped off the media. I guess what I'm asking is why Vanek would be brought in as a witness, above so many others. Number of bets? Amount of bets? Quote
