Hoss Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 Zadoroff comes as advertised. Zadohrhoff* Quote
X. Benedict Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 Zadohrhoff* Zadorov I'll have years to screw it up. @HF Armia had some nice open ice moves. Not much else of note. Had his head up, looks like he got to full speed quickly. Quote
Campy Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 Were there any Armia sightings? He had his moments - skated well and seems to read plays well - but it looked to me like he may have been a little... not intimidated, but maybe almost overwhelmed by some of the physical play. He reminded me of D Roy occasionally - just kind of floating at times. Given his overall lack of familiarity with the N American game, I'm not going to panic or fret much about it. It'd only make me nervous if he's playing the same way a year from now... Quote

Had his head up, looks like he got to full speed quickly. Thanks X. Looking ahead, I take it many of these prospects will be AHL bound or back to their respective junior clubs. Any chance we see some of them to the ECHL as well? WildCard Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 Were there any Armia sightings? I thought he played better than I've been hearing of him. Quick to get up to full speed, had a nice back-check in the d-zone. Once toe-drag at the net that nearly worked, and I thought he looked like one of the more comfortable players out there, IMO though. Little disappointed with Samson. Certainly had the freeze button handy whenever he got the puck (the ice just seemed to stop around him/slowed the game down very well) but he missed a few passes and looked a tad bit jittery out there. Nothing not to be expected though, full confidence that he'll live up to the billing. Quote
Campy Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 <snip> Thanks campy, same question for you I posed to X. Any chance we see some of this talent in the ECHL this coming year? I could write paragraphs about boring stuff like defensive positioning, battling along the boards, faceoffs, and other on-ice stuff. The player moves stuff I'm not really in tune with. There are a lot of guys who who played tonight that could probably benefit by spending a year or two in the E but most of guys I'm thinking of will be returning to their junior or college teams (or in the cases of Sundher and Kea, the Amerks) this fall. Maybe somebody else who is more familiar with the prospects' eligibility could chime in? Quote
Jeanbe Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 Dang it; how is it the video stream isn't compatible with an iPad? No go on Safari, and didn't see it as an option through the Sabres app. Sigh. Amazing attendance, though... way to represent! Probably flash based. Apple doesn't like flash. Worked great on a droid device however. Quote

bob_sauve28 Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 I'm liking Risto's game. If I were a betting man I'd wager he makes the team. Man among boys. I'm betting he is a captain of the Sabres someday Quote
qwksndmonster Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 (edited) So who looked more impressive, Zadorov, Pysyk, or Risto? Seems like Risto from what others have said (I didn't catch the game). Good to hear some positive things about Catenacci. Hopefully he can keep improving, because he was a prospect I had started to give up on. Edited July 16, 2014 by qwksndmonster Quote
SabresBillsFan Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 So for the people that went or were actually able to watch the game who stood out for u? How did Reinhart and Grigrenko do? Who was a player u didn't expect to be so good? Not much mention of Compher or Fausching? Quote

Good to hear some positive things about Catenacci. Hopefully he can keep improving, because he was a prospect I had started to give up on. Yeah, I'd say Risto, but Zadorav is coming along nicely. As for Pysyk, he was his usual self - steady, calm, in the right place at the right time, not flashy but just effective. The coaches will have some difficult choices about the roster this fall. A couple of observations from Mike Harrington and post-scrimmage audio from Samson, Risto, Chadd Cassidy a couple others: http://blogs.buffalonews.com/sabres/2014/07/d-camp-scrimmage-audio-what-i-say-what-they-said.html Quote

Who was a player u didn't expect to be so good? Not much mention of Compher or Fausching? Reinhart and grigorenko were both ok, nothing spectacular. few nice plays or passes here or there. Fasching IMO was one of the best players out there tonight noticed him a ton along the boards he's so strong at protecting the puck and just looks massive out there. Compher I didn't notice much at all. Catenacci I didn't like his game, quick and good stick handling but seemed selfish. Guy I was most surprised about was florentino he was all over the place in a good way (but he did get burned by baptiste once who looked good, great skater). Also carrier had a great game but I am very high on him so not very surprised by that but others may have been Risto girgensons and Ullmark were my top 3, really think we may have found one for the future in Ullmark Oh and wanted to add that I thought sundher played a great game as well I was surprised by him. looked fast smart and dangerous with the puck Edited July 16, 2014 by sabre snipe Quote

Who was a player u didn't expect to be so good? Not much mention of Compher or Fausching? Who stood out? Nolan, Murray, Devine and a whole bunch of scouts sitting in the club level. Nolan was like a rock star sitting in the last row and people just lining up for pictures. I'm guessing at some point GMTM said knock that ###### off as by the third they were more protected and doing pics. GMTM was GMTM focused on the roster sheet and his phone. Our club level as this group sitting there emphasizes gives a great vantage point to watch the game. I love mine and it's in a corner. I have some pics but I use IE 11 and this site hates it. So I won't do it tonight but will try to post them in this thread by the weekend because I don't have time right now. Players that stood out? Sadly not much to me but there was definitely some intensity. Couple of solid hits and a fight but, and I hate to say this, I wanted certain guys to OWN the ice and I didn't really come away with that. Gergs had a couple nice shifts and was a bull a time or two. But he's an NHL player. Grigo I am hoping that the weight he added would make him more prominent, dominant, physical or something and I am still really hopeful for him but didn't get what I was looking for tonight from him. Risto and Pysyk fine but again they are now NHL'ers and I expected them to OWN the ice. Lemieux had a couple of moments but definitely doesn't make the team based on what I saw. Zadorov the conquering hero, really did nothing to lessen himself in my eyes but his next step should be Roch and since he can't go there I think he gets protected minutes in Buf. He will make mistakes. And he will make many more plays that make you smile. Not sure what he ended up with but at least an assist and +3 tonight. Samson. Showed skill. Sadly to me he will need even more protected minutes than Zad. Why does it seem that we are getting boned with this junior rule repeatedly? Grig, Zad, now Samson. From what I saw I would put him in Roch also. Not top six minutes. So Tankers you may get your wish this season. The most impressive I saw tonight was Ullmark. Guy gave up ZERO rebounds that I saw. Makarov looked pretty damn good also. Edit: also what stood out was the we are using a goal siren followed by a song I don't know and don't care about. But the siren stood out for sure. I thought everyone hated internet explorer, not just this site :P . Agreed that Ullmark was the best on the ice, but Makarov didn't look very good in my opinion..let more than a couple easy shots trickle thru, and was saved by florentino at the goal line on one of em. bcsaberks Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 I'm no GMTM, but I liked Compher giving it to Grigs. If I had to bet I'd say Grigs will be a bust. He pushed back a little but mostly just seemed annoyed. Like Vanek in that respect. Hopefully he lights up the A next Oct /Nov and can contribute /gain respect. I thought Zadarov looked slow and a step behind the play in his own end. He stood a couple guys up nicely, but at his worst I had a Joe Finley flashback. Still a year off from regular nhl duty? Agreed on Armia looking comfortable and in control. First call up? Lemiux looked good too in this group, skating and chirping and making guys nervous. The size of the crowd was redonk. The lack of respect for the whistle was equally redonk. Not sure what people were thinking there. No ushers, woohoo! Quote
Derrico Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 Just got home from development camp and will post my thoughts. I haven't read anything on this thread yet so sorry if it's been repeated. Also, I realize this is one scrimmage in July and probably has little meaning but I'm going to state my opinions anyways. Carrier. Wow I have to start with him. I was really looking forward to seeing him and fasching as I didn't know much about either before the deadline deals. Fasching is pretty decent but needs atleast two years before he even sniffs the show. Carrier on the other hand was excellent. One of the best out there for sure. When we got him I was disappointed we didn't get the blues top pick (can't remember his name) but carrier is going to be a good one. Baker had him ranked outside our top 10 prospects. If that's the case we really are stacked. Reinhart. I drove a round trip of five hours mainly to see him and he was invisible out there..and i was watching for him! It wasn't just that but he showed very little compete. He looked like he was skating at half speed, I really hope that isn't top speed. You could see the smarts when he was in the d zone he was almost always in the right spot but then did nothing when the puck actually got there. I hope he plays much better in training camp or I'll have no problem with them sending him back. Speaking of invisible, that was grigo. In warm ups he was stick handling between pucks and he has sickkkk hands, you can just see the talent. But game time comes and he was invisible. This is his third camp, he should be much better than average at this point. I did see him throw one hit atleast. Lemieux. I know a lot of u wanted that Russian kid with this pick but I think he's the type of guy buffalo has needed for a long time. He was chirping after every whistle and even almost got in a fight with risto after the second ended. If he won't back down from someone mature and 6 4 he won't from anyone. When we finally make the playoffs again he will be a gem. Baptiste is the real deal. That season in Sudbury was no fluke. He looks fast and smart out there. Ulmark was the best goalie out there tonight...by a lot. Let's hope he can build off his monster season last year and he may be a legit prospect. Risto was one of the best players out there. He looked huge, smart, with a great shot. Zadorov looked very lazy at times but he's so big and strong that he could get away with it in this game. I hope he won't pick up bad habits if sent back to London. Really liked mcabe tonight. Bailey had a bit of a down year in Kitchener and did not look great to me tonight. I have to end with wilhelm. The kid was what a fifth rounder? He has some great skill out there. He obviously needs to get bigger as he was pushed around a lot but I was surprised with his play. Quote

Place is packed, find section with lots of empty seats, roll up, oops, guess we aren't sitting here! (roped off for staff) I loved that Murray was sitting there solo with no one within 3 or 4 seats of him while others were clustered up. Crazy man like. Don't talk to me. Quote

As for carrier, Baker has been saying not to sleep on him from the minute he was traded here and said not to be surprised if he sees time with the sabres this upcoming year because he plays a pro-style game. maybe he doesn't have the highest upside hence his ranking outside the top 10, but he should definitely be an NHL player. I would think if all pans out right now I'd guess he has a shot as a second line winger. Quote

Rasmus_ Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 Ullmark and Carrier stood out the most to me. Ullmark wasn't tested a lot, but when he did he looked impressive. Jonas Johansson was pretty much a different beast but played well. Carrier did a lot of little things I loved as did Lemieux, and since I wasn't familiar with Carrier it was nice to see. Quote
Campy Posted July 16, 2014 Report Posted July 16, 2014 @HF: I asked Kris Baker, the guy from SabresProspects.com, who might end up in Elmira and he said he expects Jacobs and Hackett (when he returns from his injury) to end up down there. Quote

Everyone tried to put a body on him, and whenever he had the puck he seemed to draw two players to himself and made smart passes to open spots. He's going to be fine playmaker. But I think this brings up a good point in that anyone expecting high end flashiness from Samson isn't really going to see it. His game is Judo - he will take what is given, let the defender commit first, and use your weight against you. Quote
