tom webster
Every kid knows that if you didn't make the varsity team, you were cut. Doesn't matter if you play JV or not. Back in the 80's, sophomores didn't play varsity. 50 kids tried out for 30 spots, 15 varsity, 15 jv. The team had no one over 6'3" so a 5'10" sophomore(MJ) was placed on JV in lieu of a 6'1" junior. You can call it what you want but it definitely wasn't what Jordan likes to portray it as.
Iron Crotch
Peter Horachek has been named the Leafs interim head coach. I like Horachek. He has paid his dues. Unfortunately, his only two NHL head coaching shots (Panthers & now Leafs) were with the "interim" label after someone got fired.
tom webster
MJ's friend, a sophomore made the varsity team. I'm not going to finish the rest of this argument/civil discussion because I ###### hate Michael Jordan! And his hall of fame speech cemented his complete douchebaggeryness for the rest of time. I don't remember the friend part of the story but like you I have no desire to spend too much time on this.
ubkev
I don't remember the friend part of the story but like you I have no desire to spend too much time on this. Yeah, the friend was tall. The coach said the team needed more size or something.
inkman
I'm guessing the MJ haters are youngins (I know Tank is). He probably seems like a crotchety old fart to you guys but anyone around my age has a special place in their heart for MJ. Bird and Magic were the old guard and Jordan was an unparalleled newcomer both athletically and competitively. He was the cool new guy putting the league of his back and brining it to new heights. It's probably why so many younger fans clung onto LeBron. He almost rekindled the same kind of spark that MJ had minus being super competitive. James' athleticism is as freaky as MJs was for his day. Jordan changed our culture, I don't suspect anyone under 30 to understand that.

That HoF speech was a window into exactly what made Jordan tick, and it was glorious. Yes he's an egomaniac who contrived even the smallest slight against him into a mountain of motivation...but that's exactly what made him great. I can't imagine preferring to hear the same 30 cliches in every HoF speech over that brutal honesty.

He attacked people for no real reason.

thesportsbuff
Hi everyone. Not sure where to post this, and I didn't want to start a whole thread for it, so I figured this is the best spot. I saw this tweet today from Howard Simon with a photo of a replica Hasek #39 retirement banner that will be given out to all fans at the game on Tuesday. According to some of the responses, they did the same thing for Pat. Anyway, I'm sure you can guess where this is going -- Due to work/location there is really no way I can make it to this game, but I would really like one of these. Being born in 1990, I was just coming into my own as a sports fan during Hasek's prime. He was my first sports hero, my first favorite Sabre. He is probably a huge part of the reason I got into watching hockey to begin with, and definitely the reason I started out playing hockey as a goaltender. As much as I can go on and on about how much I loved that 05-06 team, or even the '99 cup finals team, I credit my love for the sport to the Dominator. So if anyone is attending the game and could get their hands on an extra one of these, I would be so grateful! I would pay any shipping fees to have it sent to me, of course. Thanks! Eleven
Lived across the street from Michael Jordan. Yes, the real one. True story. No, we did not shoot hoops together, compare Hanes, or drink Gatorade. But for two years, he was my neighbor. According to every conversation I had with my neighbor, which was zero conversations--and I am not kidding, MJ really did live across the street from me--hockey was not important to him. Can we get this back on hockey now?

I emailed Ted Black directly and asked him if he could send me one or two. I offered to pay for them and the shipping. He responded 10 minutes later with the following email from his iphone: "Let me see if I can get my grubby hands on a couple. Best regards, TNB" Back when Pegula first bought the team they handed out some white towels with Sabres logos printed on them and the date Pegula closed on the sales or something along those lines and he mailed me a couple for free. The club may not be winning but they seem to take customer services and fan appreciation to heart for sure.

If he's really good, he'll send you a free Stafford Turdburger jersey and take the $150 writeoff for his boss before they mark them down to $29 in April....... The team may stink right now, but they definitely work their ###### off on the PR side of things which is all you can ask for from the non-hockey guys. I forgot to add that when he sent me the towels way back when he included a hand written note on Sabres stationary. Class act stuff for sure. When I showed it to my Mom (the person I gave the second towel to) she went and picked up a frame for it so I could hang it on the wall with all the other Bills and Sabres stuff I have everywhere.
