Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 You can attack Sherman without defending Crabtree. If Sherman had insulted Crabtree in another, perhaps less absurd manner, nobody would be defending Crabtree besides 49's fans. White racists, in this instance, don't limit their racism solely to instances where it's black on white, it's just black is bad (their thinking, not mine). They look at gang-members like the Crips and Bloods, predominately involved in black-on-black murders/crimes, and apply the word "thug" because it allows them to justify their stereotypes. They're not sticking up for any of the black community that's harmed/murdered by one gang or the other when they insults gang-members, they're just using the worst portrayal of a race to justify their stereotypes. So if Sherman said the exact same things about Wes Welker if he played on the 49ers.....would the response of those claiming that people calling Sherman a Thug are racist be???: A) More subdued and less likely B) The same C) Amplified and more likely This should be good........ I think no one who was inclined (for the wrong reasons) to label him a "thug" for that performance was thinking about the object of his ire - not in the least. And, as a practical matter, the likelihood that Welker or someone of his ilk would've been talking sh!t to Sherman at Larry Fitzgerald's offseason workout camp? Quite low, I'd say. Because, you know, those jive-talking black guys -- they all hang together -- no whites allowed -- unless you talk like Eminem. Or maybe like Richie Incognito. Quote
TrueBlueGED Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 Can you please not completely bastardize my posts like that? I'd much rather not have it appear that I posted something which I never actually said. That practice of modifying someone's post and still leaving it as a quote has always bugged me. I'm with you on the modification of posts being annoying. But Hyperbole such as "OMG now I can't call Hans a thug while watching Die Hard" is equally as obnoxious. Just don't think it's a particularly effective way to debate. Other than that, Aud has stolen my thunder at every turn, so I'll just say I agree with basically everything he has said. Quote

My argument isn't the degree of which he would get crap for it, especially not from the media. My point is the racists, not the media, wouldn't care at all who Sherman is insulting, it's the fact that he is acting how he is that allows them to use a convenient stereotype to bolster their opinions. a racist wouldn't care because Sherman was talking down to and insulting Crabtree....another black man. MattPie Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 I agree...hearing that Sterling tape was crazy. If it was some redneck or Nazi saying it, you would just brush it off as some ignorant a-hole. It is goofy on so many levels. And I am not saying every educated/academia white person is like that....but those who find "offense" and try to tell people they are racist or how to think....those usually fit the profile. When the Sherman thing happened, the old 80's-90's Bills were at the least saying "WTF?", and some called him out as a punk. I was just glad that when I was younger and enjoyed those teams...you had classy guys like Talley and Hull, etc. who could give you honest takes but were A+ all the way. I'm 80% sure I saw Talley at Elma town court when I was a teenager pleading to a traffic offence of some kind. Real classy. :) :) Quote

MattPie Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) So, what did they pin on ya? Failure to yield to an oncoming car. (I had a head-on collision that totalled my parents car). I want to say Talley was there for a speeding ticket, but that's a long time ago for me to remember. Brown sweater and a big gold chain though. Edited April 30, 2014 by MattPie Quote

kishoph Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 That is equally offensive, but who is going to punish Larry Johnson? If you had made the same remarks as Sterling, who would punish you? Fact is, no one cares what Larry Johnson says, or what you say, or what I say, because we don't own NBA teams. Larry Johnson is someone that is know to a lot of the public, do you think that if any former well known player from the NHL was to say that the NHL should be an all white league, there wouldn't be an outrage and some kind of action taken against him ? Anyone that believes that there is no double standard is fooling themselves. Quote

The rest was just my example of what I think of when I hear the word thug, hired muscle meant for physical threat or intimidation. Quote

As for your other observations, I do not follow, do not compute. I understand the point you're making -- i just think it's off the rez. edit: yo gabba gabba. in your analogy, is crabtree a chair? because, um - yeah. Edited May 1, 2014 by That Aud Smell Quote

Going back to Magic Johnson....so you have no opposition or hesitation to tell someone you regularly have sex with to go ahead and have sex with someone who has HIV? You said that was bonkers for me to suggest that Sterling should be more concerned about that than Johnson being (whatever term for non-white does not offend you). As an avid armchair psychologist, and a skeptic of certain factions.....this fascinates me to all get out.... Quote

That Aud Smell Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 (edited) You said that was bonkers for me to suggest that Sterling should be more concerned about that than Johnson being (whatever term for non-white does not offend you). i said it was bonkers for sterling to feel that way, not for you to suggest it. sterling clearly does feel that way. he's nuts, evidently. my take: he doesn't have sex with the girlfriend anymore -- she's his public arm candy. but he hears about it from his fellow super-rich 'pals' -- or, more likely, he imagines them talking about it -- when she's on social media being pictured with black people. in the event that when he said 'sleep with them' he (1) expected he would sleep with her too and (2) that he meant sleep with Magic who has HIV, welp - the guy's bonkers, evidently. He'd perhaps rather expose himself to a terminal disease rather than expose himself to social ridicule. edit: and i'd say "stick it in your ear with 'whatever term for non-whites doesn't offend you'", but, on further reflection, I'll just take that comment as an indication that you've got nothing to say on the subject by way of substantive rejoinder. because, i get it, racists will only really mock black people when black people are calling out white people. shrader Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 So now a bidding war is lining up for the Clippers. Sterling is going to walk away with even more money than he already and we'll never hear another word about him. I'm still trying to figure out how he lost on this one. Quote

From a financial standpoint, I don't think he's been a net loser for many decades now. That doesn't look to change with a forced sale. By any other measure (and all of the ones that matter), he's been losing, and lost, for a long, long time. Quote

Generally speaking, yes. The conversation he had with Stiviano does seem to indicate he's not banging her. Although, if I try to put myself in his shoes for a minute, would my 80 year old billionaire nutsack care if my young, nubile (I don't find her attractive) piece of gold digging arse was nailing a known HIV infected man at the same time? I guess everyone has a price... Quote

Well, I don't think most owners buy teams for the express purpose of making money. There's a lot of status and ego involved in owning a major pro franchise. He's going to trade that for an amount of money that will have zero impact on his life outside of numbers on paper. Quote
