First of all ... I hope you are feeling much better and on the mend.

Secondly, Stamkos over Kane. I think he is the better player and does not seem to get involved in many off ice shenanigans.

Thanks for the well wishes. I still have to this drain/pump thing coming out of my side for a few more days (hopefully it will be removed on Monday), and the antibiotic has basically destroyed my taste buds, but beyond that I'm doing much better!

I too feel Stamkos is the better overall player.

You have the first overall pick in the 11HL (the successor to the NHL after I destroyed it) draft. "Tanking" for McDavid is not an option because I have destroyed him too. You would build a team around Weber instead of Crosby?

Yep. Shea. 6'4 235 defenseman who can score and play in all situations and has a deadly accurate point shot. And, is not a whiney douche.

I'll give you the whiny douche thing with Crosby, that's for sure. As for Weber over him, well, to each his own I guess.

I dislike Sid more than just about any player in the league. But if I was building a team, and could pick any player first overall, it'd still be him.

Sid is a great player, of course, but if I was building a team I'd build it around a shut down defensive pair who get a ton of ice time in all situations. I'm of the belief that the backbone of the Blackhawks, and one of the main reasons for their success, is the all-world defensive pair of Keith and Seabrook.

Respectfully disagree. Toews. Just my opinion, of course.

2015 UFA signing, this kind of believe will help me through next season, that and with #1 and #2 the sabres draft Mcdavid and Eichel. :w00t:

And to answer the topic, I was thinking just about the same last night, when i saw him come through again for his team, im starting to rank him above Malkin and crosby to be honest.

He's talented obviously, and a Sabres fan knocking him is like a guy who has to walk to work making fun of another guy's car.

But doesn't it seem that more often than not Sid just kind of disappears and becomes a non-factor in playoff games? Especially over the last couple of seasons?

Well, let's look at it this way

2010 and 2013 - do the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup without Patrick Kane on the roster?

I'm going to vote NO! Look at his post-season stats from both those seasons - 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 total post-season points in those two seasons.

I don't know he's the best player in the world - but he's easily Top 5. He's a great player - when he's on his game, he's amazing to watch.

Just for comparison - the Sabres top point scorer for 2014 was Hodgson - with 44 points in 72 games. Kane scored more points in 2 Stanley Cup runs, playing against the best defenses in the NHL, than the Sabres best points scorer in an entire season, playing a bunch of games against bottom shelf defenses!!!

Is this the best reason to start a brand new thread?

... Also no.

What an irritating response. This is exactly what a new thread should be for. I don't know what your name was before, but somehow you've managed to post over 3000 times and managed not to be infected by any civic or community ethos. We have a long off-season.

We could put a lump of coal in your ass and it would turn to diamond before the sabres drop puck again. Consider unclenching and having a little fun. This is a game we are talking about here. It's a good hockey topic.

As for Kane - if I was starting a team, I'd probably take Toews first. Although Kane wouldn't be far down the list.

Edit: I see others addressed this, so apologies for piling on, but I needed the vent.

Me too.

IMHO, in order for a defenseman to be the #1 overall pick, it has to be a truly generational guy like Pronger or Potvin or Orr. Otherwise it has to be a center.

I was really impressed with Kane's Olympic performance

Hodgson and Kane probably faced the same defences (different conferences not with standing). I don't think the other team was putting out their best D against Scott.

I don't like this reasoning. I don't support the Sabres based on the merit of their performance, so I don't see why their performance should affect the legitimacy of my views

First in the NHL, or first as you would take him before you would take Kane?

I'd take Toews first overall. He puts up 80 points a season, whilst being defensively fantastic (better than 100 points with mediocre defence imo). Plus he provides the right culture of professionalism and giving it your all. He was in contention for the C for Canada, despite the fact Crosby is a generational offensive player - that is impressive. (Crosby would be my second choice.

I don't know, I guess I'm in the minority here, but I think Stamkos is really overlooked alot. He is just as good, if not slightly better, of a goal scorer than Ovechkin, while playing a better 2 way game and putting in more effort. As far as Crosby, Stamkos is a much more productive goal scorer.

Posted

And are these three pretty much consensus top 3 following Crosby and Geno? or would Toews come ahead of some/all?

I'd but Weber in there somewhere.

Posted

Stamkos may have passed Sid as the leagues best forward. He at least deserves to be in that conversation.

Ovi is in the conversation too but I don't know that he would be ahead of Getzlaf or Toews, or Malkin.

What's everybody's top 5 (or 10 if you're feeling it) skaters?

For me:

1. Crosby

2. Malkin

3. Stamkos

4. Weber

5. Ovechkin

6. Getzlaf

7. Datsyuk

8. Toews

9. Tavares

10. Suter

That's a bit of a quick list.

Posted

I'd put Stamkos ahead of all of them.

I really like Stamkos too, and think he's a better player, but I think Getzlaf's playoff experience would have me pick him over Stamkos assuming I could field a cup-competitive team right away.

I'd but Weber in there somewhere.

Weber is the best defenseman I've ever watched (yes, I am very young and recognize that)
