Hoss Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Potentially available QBs that interest me (in order): Cutler, Eli Manning, RG3, Foles, Kaepernick, Bradford. Nothing else seems worthwhile to me. Certainly not Hoyer. Bradford would be better than Orton if healthy but that's a HUGE if. If anybody like Newton, Matt Ryan or Rivers become available then I'll be pissed if any other team gets them. They move to the top of the list. One name worth watching if the Raiders do take Mariota (I don't expect them to) -- Derek Carr. He's been a bright spot on a bad team. As of now McCoy will be a UFA. He may not choose to be in Washington. One thing the Bills have is a great defense, which makes us a desirable destination for any QB with starting aspirations. I'd kick the tires on RGIII. Same with Jake Locker. 100% hell no on Locker -- he got hurt again today. He can't go a game without getting hurt. At least Sam Bradford has shown talent and ability to play a couple games healthy each year. On McCoy -- He is not good. Hasn't been good for Washington, either. Isn't better than Orton.
Eleven Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Meh. Doesn't seem to be that big of a deal to sift through a few pages. I trust that I missed something that changes your perfect game comment. Yeah, it had a lot more to do with not ###### up 4th downs and the clock than it had to do with calling plays. As of now McCoy will be a UFA. He may not choose to be in Washington. One thing the Bills have is a great defense, which makes us a desirable destination for any QB with starting aspirations. I'd kick the tires on RGIII. Same with Jake Locker. But not McCoy. And I think he'll be in Maryland anyway. This has Snyder screwiness written all over it.
Hoss Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Yeah, it had a lot more to do with not ###### up 4th downs and the clock than it had to do with calling plays. On that -- I was very disappointed with the fade route on 3rd and 5 before the half. Should've gone safer there and looked to get to the sticks on either a TE pass or a dump off. Otherwise 4th downs were fine today.
Iron Crotch Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 But not McCoy. And I think he'll be in Maryland anyway. This has Snyder screwiness written all over it. Dan Snyder has ###### up that team so bad. I'm loving every second of it. I think free agents will want to play for a guy like Pegula. He spends money and isn't a big giant douche like Snyder. I'm strangely optimistic about the future of the Bills if we can find a QB who can make basic throws.
Johnny DangerFace Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) Disagree 1000%. Good RBs are a dime a dozen. If we had a good O-line and a somewhat existent passing game Boobie Dix would do fine. Eh I disagree about dixon being a feature back in a power run game. If we keep our entire defense together, and add some depth late in the draft and free agency, then we have to figure out offense. We aren't going to get the answer to QB in round 2 (at least not for next year where playoffs are a must) so the answer must be the run game. I agree its 80% the o-line, but I think having a great feature back with a mid-second rounder isn't a bad idea. Maybe trade up into the early 3rd for one of there are several and use that second rounder on o-line. So it depends on the RB, but if someone of eddie lacy's skill set is expected ot go there then, then I wouldn't complain Orrrrrr, get Adrian Peterson in free agency! edit: I'm not saying not to try and get a QB, but that we need to fix the o-line for anything to matter. And finding a great RB in the second is a lot easier than a great QB. Again, depends on who is there, or else an early 3rd would be fine. Edited December 15, 2014 by Johnny DangerFace

A guy like Mike Iupati could fix the whole thing. Then you can draft a guard or sign another vet to play the other guard spot. Glenn had a rough day but is a good left tackle. Wood has struggle since the two guards around him have been trash, but they can fix that. Henderson has been an extremely pleasant surprise at RT.
Johnny DangerFace Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) I'm not saying it needs 5 new starters, just needs to be priority #1 for improving during the off-season. I think it may need a little more than you think, but definitely do-able in one offseason. But that was also kind of my point, address it and then try to get the most impact early in the draft. DB, Dline, LB, WR, TE are all definite "no"s for me. QB if you think he might be a long term answer, I just don't think this is a good idea for next year. Oline if you think you still need a starter that you didn't get in free agency. Otherwise that just leaves RB. And with an improved, O-line and elite D, that should be pretty impactful. Look no further than seattle. Russell Wilson has been bottom 5 in yards a game for his entire career I believe (#29 in 2014, #29 in 2013, #29 in 2012). Best thing you can do for a QB is have a great D and run game and don't ask much. Dixon and Jackson are fine in complementary roles moving forward. Same with Brown. But it would be nice to have a feature back Edited December 15, 2014 by Johnny DangerFace
Hoss Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Priority number 1 is quarterback at ALL times until you've got a long-term starter. The Bills don't have that. I think the o-line is number two, sure. I won't say that a QB needs to come first because there's no real way of saying how things shake out. But get a quarterback and a starting guard before the offseason ends please and thank you.
Johnny DangerFace Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 Yea but I disagree with the idea of just drafting QBs non-stop until you find one. A good QB would be amazing, but I think next year our best hope for average QB play comes from free agency or trade, not a second round rookie. And I'm still of the opinion the best thing you can do for a QB is give them a good line and run game

They draft QBs until they find one and then keep drafting them once they've found a starter. It's simple work, really. I'm also not saying they should draft one in the second round. I don't really know where they'll go in the second round. There aren't likely to be any big-time QB or TE talents there. There are certainly quite a few offensive line prospects in that range. They should be targeting a QB in trades and then draft one late.

Yea but a lot of people say draft one in the first each year until you find one, I'd be curious how often a team has draft a QB in the first or second round in back-to-back years. I can only think of a few rare examples. And some good franchises dont. Some teams who have franchise QBs will draft one in the second round every few years (how often has this even helped?). I'm not going to go through the teams today, but lots of teams didn't draft a QB for years before they had a franchise QB. It can be done both ways I could also argue a lot of playoff teams have spent a second rounder on a RB the past few years. Truth is, there a lot of ways to build a playoff team, there are a lot of different ways to address the QB spot successfully. Edited December 15, 2014 by Johnny DangerFace

This year "as high as you see fit" might not be until later in the draft. Only guys I have a slight interest in going into the offseason early in the draft -- Mariota, Winston, Cook, Hundley, Petty. I'll do more "scouting" on them to see if the later few are worth a high pick. 3rd/4th might be the highest any get a look.

LastPommerFan Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 I starting to fear that the inability to fix the quarterback situation may cause one of the greatest NFL defenses of ALL TIME to never make the playoffs. That is startlingly Buffalo.
Johnny DangerFace Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 This is correct. Some good teams do, some don't. Also most good teams weren't good teams until they had a franchise QB. And the methods they got one are varied as can be

Brawndo Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 If Connor Cook comes out and nobody takes him in the first he would be worth it. But I think he stays in school. The QB position will have to be address via trade. Cook would be a great pick up, but if he comes out he probably goes in the first round and he is doesn't he will not make it past picks 33-38

Hoss Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 I'm not giving up on this season with all the offseason talk, but to add: Looking at the cap they'll be at around $120M if Spiller opts out going into the offseason. That's about $25M worth of space if the cap gets to the projected $145. They can roll over about $11M of space from this season -- about $36M of space. -Cut Mike Williams ($6.8M) and Keith Rivers ($1.7M). That moves it to about $43.5M. Say they give $11M of that to Hughes, $4M to Spikes, $5M to Searcy and then around $4M to the mixture of Easley, Wynn, Bryant, Summers and Hogan that would leave them with about $19.5M to play with. If Orton opts in we can cut him and save about $5.5M to make it $24.5M. Add Iupati at $7M (would make him the highest paid guard in league history) and you're at $17.5M. There's a few other useless guys they could cut to get that back to $20 which would allow them to make a move for any QB they want and sign their draft picks.
Johnny DangerFace Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 I hope searcy doesn't cost 5mil a year! No doubt this is going to be a very important and hopefully productive offseason. There are a lot of young key pieces in place on both sides of the ball

There are a lot of young key pieces in place on both sides of the ball I was going a little high with those numbers just to account for high demands. But he could probably get that on the open market. $4-5M will be his final number I assume. Hughes might end up with just $9-10M but I went a little high there, too. I can see Dareus demanding at or near McCoy's $13.5M. Maybe he loves us and goes a little lower.
