nfreeman Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Bill Cowher hasn't coached in how long? No thanks. But how about as team president -- in charge of finding the new GM, coach, setting the tone for the franchise, etc.?
darksabre Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Bill Cowher hasn't coached in how long? No thanks. Come now, that's like saying Obi Wan just forgets how to use the Force. If he's even remotely as good as Wade Phillips it gives this team a chance. I wonder how much $$ Cowher would want to take Brandon's job? But how about as team president -- in charge of finding the new GM, coach, setting the tone for the franchise, etc.? I see we're thinking similar thoughts this morning.
SwampD Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 This. A thousand times. I was hoping against hope that I wouldn't open this thread and see you spouting this nonsense. Everyone here watched the game. Either no one, or perhaps one person, agrees with you. The reason no one agrees with you is that your position is fundamentally ridiculous (not to mention childish and hysterical). As for dubious calls that benefited the Bills: it didn't get much play on the telecast, but I thought the Miami fumble on the punt return wasn't a fumble. That call gave the Bills the ball on the Miami 39 at the end of the 3rd quarter with a chance to tie or take the lead. The Bills did nothing with it, as they did nothing with the ball most of the other times they got it. The Bills' allegedly good defense gave up 19 points in the 2nd half of a do-or-die game, and over 5 yards per carry on run D. (And just when I was starting to think Dareus was really stepping up.). When they absolutely needed to get the ball back in the 4th quarter (not that the offense could've done anything with it), they couldn't. Jerry Hughes agrees with me. And the D only gave up 10 points. the other nine were awarded to Miami by Walt "just give it to 'em" Coleman. Or is it Walt "you can't congratulate your own teammate" Coleman. Or is it… In the seeing what we want to see category, the ball was clearly coming out before he was down
LGR4GM Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 I know it is the middle of the season but I would fire Doug Marrone and Nate Hackett today. That game was red zone fail after red zone fail. They looked like they were coaching a crappy college team with some of their decisions.
Jsixspd Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Well, it could be truthfully said(if perhaps a smidgen intellectually dishonest) that the team has really turned around under Pegula's ownership. ;)
TrueBlueGED Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 But how about as team president -- in charge of finding the new GM, coach, setting the tone for the franchise, etc.? I'm just really hesitant to get somebody involved who has been removed from the game for so long, and putting him in a position he's never done doesn't do much to alleviate my concerns. To me, and I know many will disagree, it would scream as a repeat of the Marv Levy move to placate angry fans. For the record, I always thought he was overrated as a coach too. He had a ton of ups and downs and managed to keep his job because the Rooneys are super loyal, but he didn't exactly have a 15 year run of consistent excellence. IIRC, he was also quite conservative as a coach, which needless to say I've seen enough of. My preferred approach remains to get a younger up and comer, preferably from an organization known for 21st century football. I know fans are going to end up naming every coach who has won a Super Bowl and is currently unemployed, but it seems to me those splashy moves never actually work--the coach is just unable to repeat past success. I want the proverbial "next one." Come now, that's like saying Obi Wan just forgets how to use the Force. No, no it is not. The game changes, systems and approaches become obsolete, and so on. Dave Wannstedt really was a good DC in his heyday...what happened a number of years later? His stuff didn't work anymore.
LGR4GM Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Is there a guy from San Fran or Seattle maybe (sorry I am being vague) who is supposed to be really good and probably a head coach in the near future? I wish I could remember his name but I think he is a def/off coordinator.

Doohicksie Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Stop. Did you even watch the game?! It was a tightly contested, low scoring, defensive game that changed on a horrible PI call that led to them taking the lead for good. If you don't think that that call was the pivotal play of the game then,… Just what I thought. /crickets. This game was stolen from us. It should have been wrapped up by the Bills long before that point in the game. Orton is terrible 1) in the last two minutes of the game, and 2) in the red zone.
Stoner Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 (edited) I wouldn't underestimate the power of familiarity and nostalgia and Pittsburgh when it comes to Terry. I'd bet Phil Kessel's remaining nut that Cowher is exactly who Terry is targeting. Edited November 14, 2014 by PASabreFan

Orton is terrible 1) in the last two minutes of the game, and 2) in the red zone. Hackett is awful. He's the problem and has been all year. We move the ball all the way down the field, then as soon as we get in the red zone, he goes to an empty backfield. WTF! Every play is telegraphed. You know when we are going to run, you know when we are going to pass. Awful. He's got to go.
Eleven Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 I turned it off as soon as Marrone decided to punt from the Miami 47, down 10, with less than ten minutes to go. The man does not understand how the clock works. It is baffling that he was able to rise to this level. At the same time, I'm concerned about having the team learn yet another playbook if he gets fired; Mario lamented at the beginning of this season that the defense was learning its fourth set of plays in four years. I don't want them to go five for five. Is there a guy from San Fran or Seattle maybe (sorry I am being vague) who is supposed to be really good and probably a head coach in the near future? I wish I could remember his name but I think he is a def/off coordinator. Is it San Diego and is his name Frank Reich?

It's gonna take T-Peg or someone higher up the feeding chain to get rid of him.
CallawaySabres Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Here's the deal. The refs decided that game. Period. Would it be better if we lived in a world where the Bills were good enough where the refs couldn't have an effect on the outcome of a game? Absolutely! But they did. ######em!!!!! The Bills got the ball back in Miami territory after the fumble (which happened because of the safety). It actually worked out better but the Bills O sucks so bad, they couldn't do squat. This team was never going anywhere.....
Iron Crotch Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Hackett is one of Marrone's "boyz". It's gonna take T-Peg or someone higher up the feeding chain to get rid of him. Hackett's play calling is terrible. I don't mind conservative play calling when you have a very good defense, like we have this year. I do mind when the play calling doesn't adapt to the down and game situation. I've seen too much of the latter this year.
nfreeman Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 I wouldn't underestimate the power of familiarity and nostalgia and Pittsburgh when it comes to Terry. I'd bet Phil Kessel's remaining nut that Cowher is exactly who Terry is targeting. This sounds truthy to me. At the very least TP has to be thinking about it. I turned it off as soon as Marrone decided to punt from the Miami 47, down 10, with less than ten minutes to go. The man does not understand how the clock works. It is baffling that he was able to rise to this level. On 3rd-and-6 in that situation, you need to have already decided that you are going to go for it on 4th down, and operate accordingly -- i.e. that you have 2 downs to get the 1st down. You make sure you get a few yards on 3rd down so you have a good percentage chance at converting on 4th down. That's Whaley's guy (along with EJ and Orton, of course). Time to clean house.
wjag Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Well, it could be truthfully said(if perhaps a smidgen intellectually dishonest) that the team has really turned around under Pegula's ownership. ;) The team turned around when they lost Jackson and Spiller in the same game.

wjag Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Orton hears a Who has really been the problem these last two weeks. All of a sudden he can't handle the blitz.
dEnnis the Menace Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 The play that pissed me off the most was the 4th and 3 fly route to a 3rd/4th string running back...really?! That and the punt mentioned above. seriously. Hard count it, get them to jump. The play calling, whether it falls on Hackett or Marrone, I don't care, it's terrible. I revise my estimation and guess this team finished 6-10 or 7-9. 8-8 if we're extremely lucky and beat the Browns, Jests, and Raiders. Yay more medicority

It was pretty much the same as quitting. As for your prediction: I think it's safe to include the Browns with the Packers, Broncos and Patriots in the "definite loss" category, which puts them at 7-9. If they split with the Jets and Oakland, that results in 6-10 -- i.e. a Jauron-like 1-7 finish after starting 5-3. Brandon/Whaley must go.

nfreeman Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 If Marrone makes smarter decisions, this team can beat the Browns and Packers. Not bloody likely. Rogers is going to shred the D for at least 6 TDs.

Is it your convention that a GM should only get one kick at the coaching can, or that just this one in particular should only get one? I disagree in either case, just wondering.
