Jsixspd Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 "Thanks" to the Olympics. It will be tough to get through it - this time of the year is rugged anyways - gray, cold, dismal, football season is over, baseball is in its normal winter hibernation. Now we lose hockey for nearly 3 weeks! It's easier to take since the Sabres are so bad, and aren't really playing for anything at this point. But we had a shortened season last year, and then lose 3 weeks this year. Bleh! I liked the Olympics better anyways when it was amateurs playing, and not all the pros. Quote

Olympic hockey is ten times better than what the regular season NHL has to offer. Quote
dudacek Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 Huh? Olympic hockey is ten times better than what the regular season NHL has to offer. Yes. I'm actually looking forward to being fully invested in wins and losses again. Quote
Campy Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 I liked the Olympics better when the western countries sent amateurs too, but I'm not so sure why you're saying there's an upcoming hockey drought. Quote
FolignosJock Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 Yes. I'm actually looking forward to being fully invested in wins and losses again. Me too! I can finally follow a team i 100% want to win every game instead of the 30% I want the sabres to win. Quote
Jsixspd Posted February 4, 2014 Author Report Posted February 4, 2014 (edited) Well, the NHL is sidelined for nigh unto 3 weeks. This was when the Olympics were worth watching - the young amateurs got their day in the sun, without the hypercommercialization and the millionaire pros hogging all the glory that was once reserved for the up and coming. And notice - no product placement in the arena - no Toyota logos on the ice, etc. Edited February 4, 2014 by Jsixspd Quote
Assquatch Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 Yes Miracle on Ice is exactly what the Olympics were like every time before the darn pros ruined it. Quote

Assquatch Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 yeah except the best part about having it this way is we get to see those amateurs play each and every year in the WJC ...and 82 games this year on the Sabres. Quote
Stoner Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 Ditto to the anti-pro sentiment. It's awful, and I won't watch it. Quote
bcsaberks Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 I'm looking forward to it. http://www.sochi2014.com/en/ice-hockey-schedule-and-results I think they are 9 hours ahead of us, so most games will be early AM for us on EST. The biggest challenge is going to be staying off twitter/Internet. Quote
apuszczalowski Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 ...and 82 games this year on the Sabres. in Rochester Do you really think that most of these guys on the sabres roster would be able to earn a spot on one of the WJC teams? Quote
SwampD Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 Olympic hockey is awesome. All you curmudgeons need to get off your salty high horse and just enjoy some good hockey. It's fun. This whole myth about pros ruining is just that, a myth. Back when it was amateurs only, the United States was the only country to use only amateurs. That's why the "Miracle" was what it was; American amateurs beating Russian pros. As for the three week drought, we're workin' on a six year hockey drought here in Buffalo. I'll gladly take a three week vacay from this mess. Quote

darksabre Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 I will gladly take a break from the NHL for three weeks of Olympic Hockey every morning. Quote
Trettioåtta Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 Hockey at a reasonable hour? *Eyes fill with tears* Yes please Quote
IKnowPhysics Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 I'm confused by this argument. The NHL is better to watch than the modern olympics, but the old-school olympics were better to watch than the modern olympics because there were no pros and less advertising? That's nuts. Olympic hockey should be the highest level of competition between nationalities with the best athletes alive. In some sports, that means professional athletes. It shouldn't mean the best athletes alive that weren't good enough or old enough to play professionally. As for advertising and commercialism, it's infected every aspect of spectator life. Deal with it. Quote

Deal with it. Agreed. I'd think the people complaining are the ones that like a ton of hitting, fighting, and 2-1 games. The Olympics are almost like an all-star game but the players care and play hard; that's some good stuff. I just wish I had some sort of DVR/cable to record the games. Quote

I don't think the style of preferred hockey has anything to do with who likes Olympics. At all. I think people who complain about it just really like the nhl which I guess is understandable OR they just like to complain and have a pattern of complaining (shocker it's probably the latter) Quote

I was just saying I think people who like fighting and hitting who truly like hockey still like the Olympics as everyone. My point was those who complain about it either just prefer nhl hockey or are complainers XD Quote
millbank Posted February 4, 2014 Report Posted February 4, 2014 (edited) Have mixed emotions regarding Olympic hockey. No doubt each Olympics great hockey is played. My concern at times is with the competition between nations as opposed to individuals from all nations on individual times competing as in NHL , the bad feeling between nations that can ensue, troubles me. NHL games we see great players working together on their respective teams, while regular season can become boring at times, the current tournament that is the NHL playoffs, each year also compelling. It a marvel how at end the two left standing compete for Cup. Canada average at best in goal, do not have the great goalie this time around. U.S do not have it at Center Ice. Both going in stand 4 - 5 U.S better in goal thus 4, Canada 5, with Sweden , Russia , Finland ahead, with Sweden winning gold, Russia Silver, and Finland bronze. Finland though could surprise.imo Edited February 4, 2014 by millbank Quote
