JJFIVEOH Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Is Koziol going to cry when Miller gets traded?
SabresfaninAlaska Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I guess I am old fashioned. You play to win and not to tank. What is the sense in winning at this point? They are the worst team in hockey and one of the worst teams in the history of the NHL?
dudacek Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Seems to me tonight was a look into the crystal ball. That's what we can probably expect from the Sabres next year. The way Nolan coaches we will have an aggressive push, but we won't have the horses to capitalize on all our chances, and we won't have the experience to avoid breakdowns. And with Miller gone, average goaltending — like we got tonight — will have us on the bottom end of a lot more 4-3 scores.
bunomatic Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I missed the game. Upthread someone mentioned a beauty clean hit. I'm too lazy, tired or apathetic to go search for the post. Anyone care to explain who hit who ? I'd love to see it.
Nitro60 Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 NO! You had to be there. :) Weber knocked the Panther off his feet with a solid check.

Huckleberry Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 the way stafford is playing we'll get a 1st rounder this or next year if he keeps this up :P
Doohicksie Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 With this game, I realized the team is no better than it was under RR. More entertaining at times, but no better.
Kristian Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 With this game, I realized the team is no better than it was under RR. More entertaining at times, but no better. Which is only natural - Look at the line-up. Looks like Team USA might do right with having Quick as the #1 at the olympics, Miller has been pretty average these past games.
... Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Maybe Nolan is not playing to win but playing to evaluate players for Murray, etc? I get confused. Are we rooting for tanking or winning? This is my exact thought on this. Nolan has said, several times now, that EVERY player should be able to play in every situation. He was clearly playing Leino et al to see what those players have to give to the team. There is no run for eighth this season, and tanking has been approved. Each and every player is playing every game for a roster spot, a contract, and their future - all of that is tied to whatever it is they can do for their team, be it the Sabres now or some other team in the near future. Which of these players is making their mark?
JJFIVEOH Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 the way stafford is playing we'll get a 1st rounder this or next year if he keeps this up :P I actually like the way Stafford has been playing under Nolan, a lot. He's brought more to the table than he used to, he seems to be a better all around player. Less scoring of course, but that's a given. One thing about Stafford, pre-Nolan, was when he wasn't playing up to par, he was just invisible. He never did much that was detrimental, he was just invisible. With that said, if there are to be any buyouts for next year I would much rather it be Leino. And I doubt (I know you were kidding) that Stafford nets a 1st rounder, in that case I don't want to trade him for draft picks.
dudacek Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Well Omark lasted about 25 minutes on the Hodgson line. And showed more than Leino did in his 35 on that line. Not sure why Nolan made the move. Omark provides far more in the O zone than Leino, and I don't see any appreciable difference in their games without the puck. Stafford had a great game, and not just because he scored. That said, both of those goals were great shots. Everybody pray he goes on a run and we can dish him at the deadline.

Montreal is rumoured to want him, they can send us briere + prospect in return.
carpandean Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Everybody pray he goes on a run and we can dish him at the deadline. I pray that if he goes on a run, they are smart enough to trade him. I always had the feeling that Darcy would have kept him because he went on a run.

deluca67 Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I've seen all I need to see from Omark on the Panther's third goal.
North Buffalo Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I have been wondering about Nolan's strategy too. It appears he is trying guys in different roles at different times/situation to see how well they mesh, what their skills and weakenesses are and how well they can compete. I don't see this as directly related to the score of the game, but more to see how much these guys are improving in different roles. Last night's game was played with a more wide open style, almost like he was challenging the Sabres to skate hard the whole game and play an up and down game to see how they could do. They were able to do it for 1 period, the first and then they ran out of gas. Not sure if it is a conditioning thing or a lack of talent across the board the keeps them from playing full board as a team the entire game. Probably a little of both. One line can do for a game, sometimes two, but rarely three lines. I do see improvement... then when the wheels come off, they go back to the trap close checking D game so the score doesn't totally get out of hand and hurt their fragile egos. There does appear to be a method to the madness and with a couple more years of skilled draft picks coming up, I believe it will be successful. But it isn't gonna turn into wins this season and that is a good thing reinforcing tank nation, while still accomplishing team improvement. Sorry, just thinking out loud this morning as my kids have a 3 hour delay for schools after we got 6 inches of light fluffy stuff they are calling a storm... whatever. I remember walking to school in 2 feet overnight because the plows had all the roads cleared. The wimpification of our school districts and people who don't know how to drive with cars ill prepared to deal with a snow flurry. Pathetic...

North Buffalo Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 There's a reason you have this feeling -- actually 16 million reasons. You do know there is a whole thread dedicated to dumping Stafford... Probably needs updating... so have at.... http://forums.sabrespace.com/topic/20741-stafford-needs-to-go/page__st__1200 P.S. I am a longtime Staphyl hater.... someone get this team some Cipro.
Claude_Verret Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I guess I am old fashioned. You play to win and not to tank. Every single player and coach is playing to win each and every night, of that I have no doubt. The tank is the front office and fans recognizing that the tools do not exist at this point to win on a consistent basis no matter how great the effort.
nucci Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Nolan, in his reincarnation, is seeming to be a great motivator and poor strategist. I never wanted him fired to begin with in the nineties, so I hope he pulls it together. I never thought Nolan was a great strategist 1st time around. Sabres regularly gave up 40 shots a game when he was here.
Ross Rhea Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 And with Miller gone, average goaltending — like we got tonight — will have us on the bottom end of a lot more 4-3 scores. But that is what it has been like the past 3 years with Miller here. You act as though Miller has been playing out of his mind the past 3 years to which he has not been.

FolignosJock Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Which one was the third goal? Also Jovanowski was offsides on his goal. I dont know how they missed that
