HowBoutaSenseofHumor Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 NHL has the dumbest standings I've ever seen. Just have wins and losses like every other sport. No points. Shootout win and Overtime win go into the regular win column.
Robviously Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 The solution is incredibly simple, but of course the NHL can't fathom it -- Regulation win: 3 points OT/Shootout win: 2 points OT/Shootout loss: 1 point Regulation loss: 0 point Wouldn't this make the third period of every game far more intense? Especially late in the season when teams are trying to make up ground? Plus, every game would be worth the same amount of points. The puck drops and there are 3 points up for grabs. How many can you get that night?

How many can you get that night? For some reason the IIHF is the only one capable of figuring it out
Assquatch Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 GM's warming up to the ideas of making the Loser Pointtm less impactful and all games worth the same number of points? ESPN's Craig Custance: Is the Point System Debate Returning? (Need Insider account to read the entire thing) The Score.com: Report: Growing appetite among general managers to change NHL's point system (Note: Only one team in the league would have FEWER points this season under the 3-2-1-0 system.)

Then why over-complicate it, just do wins and losses
bunomatic Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 If you gave no points to both teams for a tie would they not go for it to try and win ? Awarding a point for a tie is crazy. Nobody won the game nobody gets a point.

How many can you get that night? of course. 3-2-1 is so obviously the way to go it's almost crazy to discuss it. and to anyone who is thinking "why fix what aint broke?," please read the grantland article linked earlier. the incidence of ties has gone from 18 to 23% with the advent of the loser point. bleagh! If you gave no points to both teams for a tie would they not go for it to try and win ? Awarding a point for a tie is crazy. Nobody won the game nobody gets a point. that's better than the system we have now!
