Now if we could just tear down the sky way.......

We just hired a guy known to be a Troll as the GM. No way they're tearing down his bridge.

Still won't be enough. We probably don't have the infrastructure for an all-star game, unfortunately.

You might if you stretched it to Buffalo-Niagara Falls.

Draft:

After 2015, in which the Panthers will host, it'll have been 17 years since we hosted the draft in the brand spanking new Marine Midland Arena. There's quite a few teams that haven't hosted yet, so I'm not sure how soon it'll be until we host again, and I have no idea why Florida got the honor of being the only team to host twice since we've hosted.

All-Star:

The infrastructure idea is silly. If we can host the draft and the WJC, we can host the All-Star game. I have no idea how they select teams, but we're the earliest team to host the All-Star Game that hasn't hosted twice yet (all cities that hosted before us have hosted twice). The downside is that there are some other NHL-darling cities that haven't hosted in a long time too, like Detroit (probably waiting for their new arena), Pittsburgh, St Louis, and New Jersey, and some cities that haven't hosted at all, like Winnipeg, Anaheim, Glendale, Nashville, and Washington. They could also send it back to the Islanders in their new digs.

The draft does not attract nearly as many people as does the all-star game. It's not even close. Just in the arena alone, not to mention all of the ancillary concerts/events/etc.

The expectations of fans attending a two-week long WJC include stays at Econo-Lodge and commutes to games. The expectations of fans attending an all-star weekend are not the same at all. I don't see it being hosted in Buffalo, Winnipeg, or Edmonton any time soon.

Lovely idea, but where does the traffic go? surface streets? Or some sort of connector from Tift Farm to the 190?

I forget where I was, but I saw a bunch of renderings of ideas to dress up the Skyway. One was to turn it into a park, which would be pretty cool in the summer. The other was to put an observation deck below the bridge so people could climb up. I don't think I saw this one, but you could hang a pretty sweet IMAX screen in there.

We're getting the 2nd and 3rd round of the NCAA championships this year, too. If we can handle the sweet sixteen now I've got to think that with the extra stuff going down there in a couple years its not ridiculous to think.

Yeah, things have...the expectations of visitors has risen greatly since then. People traveling to an all-star game expect a gala experience.

Well, there really are only going to be ~100 - 150 new rooms down near the Arena, and there remains the questionable future of the Adam's Mark. Boutique hotels like the Lafayette are nice, but they really only add about 40 rooms to the total. We DO have the parking and transportation to pull it off if people want to stay at the Marriott, Millenium, etc., but I'm not sure that's the experience people expect.

Maybe I just don't get out much but I always enjoy the Hyatt every time I go downtown and it's walking distance to the arena. Adam's Mark on the other hand

How about hanging strings of LED lights that hang down from the bridge? You could make lovely decorative patterns at night. You could even turn it into the biggest TV screen in the world. Imagine thousands watching a Sabres playoff game on the Skyway!

Agreed unfortunately.

The draft is no big shakes. It literally is a whole lot of watching guys sitting at long tables for a few hours. There isn't even a fraction of the hype for attending that the NFL draft generates. The Sabres could get it again (for the 3rd time) but it really isn't a big deal.

Landing the ASG would be sweet, but I expect the league bigwigs agree w/ 11 & others about Buffalo not being able to meet the out of towners expectations for an ASG weekend.

You will see the draft here before the All Star game.

Buffalo in June for free is a much easier sell than Buffalo in January at $1500 per person air/hotel/tix......

Also agreed.

Looks like I didn't grab the other post about NCAA's, but will respond to that here as well. Regionals of b-ball come with nowhere near the expectations for accomodations as the Final 4 gets. ASG weekend is far more Final 4 than it is regionals.

While it would be REALLY cool to land the ASG, I'll expect it AFTER it's been announced (far off in the future) and not a minute sooner unfortunately.

Agree it'll be a while, but if Ste. Paul can get one so can we. I realize they have Minneapolis, but if another city is close enough for people to drive to I would think that people could find their way to the hotels just down the street. I think they infrastructure will be there, but it'll take us awhile to prove ourselves.

There are colored lights under it.

We're not getting the sweet sixteen. Since the NCAA has four "play-in" games now, they call the round of 64 the "second round" and the round of 32 the "third round." Stupid, but it's the NCAA.

Look, I'm as big a Buffalo booster as there is. But we have fewer than 2000 quality hotel rooms downtown--maybe even fewer than 1500. That's not going to pull in an all-star game OR a sweet sixteen.

You're not wrong, but it's still a lot of fun to watch for NHL geeks like a lot of us on this board

wow thats dumb, lol. Ok, well I've been hoodwinked, but I'll stick with my assessment. There are hotels going up all over the place down there, to the point where I'm a bit worried we're getting too many. Wait and see for 2-5 years at the least, anyways.

Who the heck is clamoring for an All-Star game? Haven't most people moved beyond those nonsense affairs in every sport (with baseball being a slightly less offensive event than the others...)?

I'd attend one. It'd be a spectacle, quality of competition aside.

I'd like to see all star games completely replaced by skills competitions. I used to enjoy watching the skills competitions more than than game itself.

Absolutely, sign me up! Skills competitions, positional competitions, fastest man/skater...give me all of that without the games and I'd be thrilled.

Minneapolis hosted a Superbowl. The Twin Cities are set up FAR better to handle an event like that or an ASG than Buffalo is, unfortunately.

On TV, the draft is watchable, I'd go so far as to say entertaining, but then again, I like watching curling on TV. ;)

In person, the draft was barely more entertaining than a root canal or watching paint dry.

Can't stand the ASG on TV. Like watching the skills competition. The whole package - skills, young guns, old timers, and ASG itself would be a blast to see in person. Yes, I'd like to see the ASG in person. But I also watch training camp every year and like watching the team go through drills and the rest.

I don't think I've watched a hockey all-star game since it was Wales vs. Campbell.
