Two or less Posted December 21, 2013 Report Posted December 21, 2013 (edited) Was about to mention Myers. But that's one player and he won a Calder wearing that number so the team/Myers himself likely wouldn't want the number to be changed for marketing purposes. Flynn I mentioned above but it's too early. So even if it seems like we have a lot of guys with high numbers we normally don't have many of those guys earn their way to a change. Also, what's the deciding factor on who gets a high one slapped on them and who gets to choose? Risto got his number, Zadorov probably had some input on his since it's near his previously-worn 65. Grigorenko got 25. So who gets the high numbers? Guys who don't make the team as true rookies? In Europe, they honor numbers very highly. Much more then they do in North America. For example, they don't retire a # in Europe unless a player dies on the field or something. Great players always end up with the legendary numbers as a show of respect. So, with this in mind, the Sabres honor players from Europe and don't pick random numbers for them. Risto as you said got the #55, Girgensons got his, Grigorenko got his #25. Armia got his #33. Larsson got #22. Novotny got #13. Not sure if Zadorov took 61 or was given it. Also, during the Sabres down years, Golisano/Quinn decided to scrap the tradition with Pominville, Roy, Miller, Vanek in hopes of selling more jerseys, thats why they also got to pick. Two or less Posted December 21, 2013 Report Posted December 21, 2013 Armia never wore 33 previously, but I see your point. I didn't think about that before. Thanks for the info. Yeah i know, but that's what he chose. I'm guessing his first couple options were not available so he took 33 to honor some Finn. Though thats a pure guess, i have no idea why he picked #33. No problem. Quote

dudacek Posted December 21, 2013 Report Posted December 21, 2013 I expected Myers to switch to 3 after his rookie season. I am such a traditionalist on this topic: top defenceman should wear 2-6, 7-18 are for forwards, 19-27 are fair game for any skater, no matter age, skill, or position 1, 30, 31 and 35 are for goalies (and more of them should wear 1) Anything else is for rookies and minor leaguers (although I am OK with a vet doubling or reversing a number if his favourite is taken, like Stu Barnes did) Quote

carpandean Posted December 21, 2013 Report Posted December 21, 2013 So, what's your favorite number never worn by a Sabres player? Surprised to see 88 has never been worn. Saving it for Kane? Others: 66, 69 (he-he), 96 Quote
Huckleberry Posted December 21, 2013 Report Posted December 21, 2013 88 is actually a bit touchy to wear. Any player to wear that number has balls. Several Players in any sports who wore that number have been forced to change it by the jewish community. Quote
Doohicksie Posted December 21, 2013 Report Posted December 21, 2013 Why is there an issue with the Jewish community? I've never heard that. Quote
SwampD Posted December 21, 2013 Report Posted December 21, 2013 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ukFAvYP3UU Boy, what a turn this thread has taken, innit? Quote
Eleven Posted December 21, 2013 Report Posted December 21, 2013 Why is there an issue with the Jewish community? I've never heard that. Members of neo-Nazi groups use the number 88 as a sort of signal to one another. H is the 8th letter of the alphabet, and 88 stands for "heil Hitler" among the loonies. That said, I've never heard of anyone in any sport changing his/her number because of this. Lindros wore it, and it's pretty common among wide receivers in the NFL. Quote
