That's quite the gash.... It probably nicked into the facial muscles a bit.... But I've seen worse than this in person in the ER.... Some short surgery and suturing will be required and there will be a nasty scar, hopefully the facial or trigeminal nerve wasn't hit too bad, but overall he looks from the pic as he will make it thru fairly Ok....

Still sucks to see , and hope for a speedy recovery

Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk survived a life-threatening injury during a 1989 NHL game when St. Louis Blues player Steve Tuttle's skate blade slashed his jugular vein, causing immediate massive blood loss. Due to the enormous pool of blood that formed within a few seconds on the ice, Malarchuk's injury has been widely referred to as professional sports' most gruesome injury. That was truly scary

Malarchuk's life was saved by the team's trainer, Jim Pizzutelli, a former Army medic who had served in Vietnam. He reached into Malarchuk's neck and pinched off the bleeding, not letting go until doctors arrived to begin suturing the wound. Still, Malarchuk came within minutes of becoming only the third fatality to result from an on-ice injury in NHL history after Howie Morenz (1937) and Bill Masterton (1968). It was estimated that if the skate had hit 1/8 inch (3 mm) higher on Malarchuk's carotid, he would have been dead within two minutes. He lost 1/3 of the blood in his body.[8] It took doctors a total of 300 stitches to close the wound.[7][9] It was also said that had the incident occurred at the other end of the ice, Malarchuk would have died - the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium had the locker room exits at one end of the ice instead of the location behind the benches, and he was at that end.

How is there no blood on the white or yellow part of his jersey?

Isn't it obvious? He bleeds yellow and white

I'm sure you have. i myself had a worse injury that I hesitate to call it a cut but more of a peel of the face from an auto accident. When I woke up from surgery the first thing the doc asked me to do was smile because they were worried about nerve and ligament damage. Thankfully there was none of that, but I've got a heck of a scar even after five plastic surgeries.

Ouch... Sorry to hear that, any residual pain from it all or just the scarring

No, thankfully just left with the nasty scar, but also other injuries that were worse. It could probably be improved with more surgery, but when I reached 13 total surgeries from that ordeal I decided I wasn't going to have any more unless absolutely necessary. I figure that my wife is stuck with me anyway!

See alot of these types of injuries in Detroit's ER's Biggest concerns are damage to the facial nerve (which limits facial expression) and damage to the Parotid salivary gland. Right surgeon still should get good closure because no tissue is lost and good cosmetic result.

While it was a pretty bad slice - I don't want to minimize it and I hope the kid has a full recovery - it didn't quite live up to what I expected given the thread title.

Man, it must've been 30+ years ago when we were playing shinny, this happened, and I thought it's what I'd be looking at when I clicked on the link: A kid took a blade from the corner of his mouth straight back toward his ear. It sliced clean through - like all the way through - just below his cheek for maybe an inch or an inch-and-a-half. From there, he was cut all the way back toward his ear, but in comparison to his mouth, it was a more superficial cut. Part of theskin below where his dimple used to be was just kind of hanging there, the inside part of his mouth visible and blood dripping everywhere. That was horrific.

What happend to me sounds right in between what you described here and the guy in the link. I remember sitting there on the side of the road with my balled up shirt pressed to my face to stop the torrent of blood, and one of the people who had stopped to help was a nurse. She asked me if she could see the cut and when i pulled the shirt away the gasps I heard from the five or six folks who were gathered around was all I needed to know...almost. I called over the guy who had stopped first to help and who had retrieved my phone from the car so I could call my wife. I asked him how bad it was....he just looked at me for a few seconds and said "it's pretty fecking bad, dude"

Thankfully I never actually saw the injury myself, but my wife described it to me, and she held it together pretty well when she first saw me probably because like the docs in this thread she had seen much worse as a trauma nurse at ECMC. The way it's been described to me is that you could see way more of my eyeball than you should see...think walking dead zombie makeup type stuff.

Wow, that is horrific too. I'm glad you didn't lose your eye and/or eyesight.

I didn't lose they eye, but I did lose the sight. Could've been worse. Had I not been wearing a seat belt I surely would have been decapitated and had the wreckage that sliced my face hit a few inches lower it probably would have been a Malarchuk type situation without the happy ending.

Dang man. You are, all things being equal, one lucky SOB!

Yep, while it was undoubtedly the worst day of my life, it was also the luckiest.

I'm sorry to hear man, but seems like you have a pretty positive outlook on things and have a strong other half to lean on.... I hit a deer on my motorcycle in 05 @ 70mph,i always wear a full face helmet or else I woulda been a goner.... My helmet shattered and I had a nasty concussion.... Lost a piece of my heel and all the skin on my back and left calf, also ripped the muscle right near the armpit... But surprisingly after about a month I was riding again, no real scarring....... Did u go to ecmc after the accident?

Curious about the heel, what were you wearing on your feet?
