Ted Nolan's post-game press conferences are great. He really gives the sports reporters some material!

Nolan: "The gloves are officially off. You have to do certain things in order to play. If you don't, you're not."

I likey. Hold them accountable Teddy. But dammit you better treat them all the same or it don't mean squat.

Take a look at the players they have in the system. Besides Armia they lack any real 1st line players that are going to make an impact soon. I'm guessing if Moulson is moved they are gonna trade him for a young prospect. They can't keep on trading for just picks and expect to turn this thing around quickly. Now look at the current defense in 3 years. Tallinder, McBain, possibly Weber will all will be gone. Plus who knows if Myers will have his head in it. He has played better under Nolan but not worth that contract. They have basically a second line who is their first line. I just don't see this thing getting turned around quickly. The only thing that is keeping this team further ahead of an expansion team is all the picks in the next 2 drafts and the last draft.

you are adding a top 2 pick, Risto and Zad after a year of growth, Girgs will be a stud, Hodgson will be a #2 center, Myers is looking much better.

I have no idea what Armia is like but my goal would be to fortify our top line. Who will that be? Reinhardt, Armia and a FA is my guess. FA is not dead folks, pieces will be added AND traded. Just get the GM to do it.

I think Ted was perhaps talking about guys like Myers and Weber. It was great that big Tyler scored a goal, but he is -10 on the year and has more PIMs than John Scott. Weber has no points and is a -13 (2nd last in the entire NHL next to Yakupov).

I didn't notice -- did anyone get benched in the 3rd period? Leino took another bonehead penalty with 12 min to go in a 1-goal game -- that might be who Tessy was referring to.

I kinda liked McNabb, Myers, Ott and Stafford tonight. Not so much for Pretty much any other forward.

Good ol' Tessy.

6 points in first 4 games and 3 since. Thus....he has disappeared.

You said since his first game. And 3 points in 6 games is still a point every other night.

Edit: and I agree with you that he's not in their long term plans.

Unlike what I read above, I thought Grigorenko continued showing improved play from the beginning of the season; he's not hesitating nearly as much, he picked up his man quite well in our zone, and he actually came out of a few congested areas with the puck. Yesterday it sounded like Teddy had already written him off though. Hard to say if he did enough to change any minds.

I think Matty Moulson is questioning himself. He whiffed on a number of scoring chances the Blues game and hasn't spent enough time in and around the paint. And he's one of those guys that if he ain't scoring he ain't doing much.

He played his best Buffalo hockey with Ennis, which makes sense; he needs to be with a good puck handler who creates time and space. Might not be a bad idea to combine those two with a more physical guy.

Of course Ennis may have been one of the guys Teddy was talking about when he was complaining about turnovers.

And Leino is the most likely culprit on the bad penalty brigade.

Also, definitely a feeling out process going on with our coach; some unexpected line combinations and situational selections.

It will be interesting to see who is out and who is in for Detroit.

PENALTY PROBLEMS PLAGUE SABRES

The Buffalo Sabres fought through penalty trouble against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday and came out on the losing end of a 4-1 tilt at Wells Fargo Center.

Sabres interim coach Ted Nolan indicated after the game that more players will be watching the game from the press box if their play and effort isn’t up to his standard.

“We have to play a certain way in order to give us a chance to compete and a chance to win. By doing stupid things like we have been, it’s not going to work,” he said. “It’s going to be ugly games like this all night so the gloves are officially off. Now we gotta do certain things in order to play. If you don’t, you’re not.”

Nolan ... "We have team that wants to play a certain way and we just can't do it."

Translation - "We have no tough skilled players. We have tough players and we have skilled players, but not both."

Major roster overhaul coming ... no more tea parties around Ryan Miller ...

Wonder if he'll put Grigorenko in top line duty once, just to try it out ...

Interesting that you mention this. For a good chunk if not the entire night, Grigorenko was matched up against Giroux and friends. Mikhail still won a majority of his faceoffs, finished even +/- and was on the ice for 12minutes. For a guy who is supposedly a giant bust according to some he seems to be finding his way. I think his lack of offense is a concern but then again the entire team mustered 1 goal.

I expect with 2 days in-between games for Nolan to work these guys a bit. Sometime next week when we get a new GM I am sure trade rumors will start to swirl because I don't believe LaFontaine and ????? Fenton/Botterill whoever, will sit around and allow the dead weight on the team to remain and to continue setting record lows for this team.

I just listened to those 26cb. I am listening to Robitaille now on WGR550 and he sounds like Miller and Nolan as well.

As Nolan put it the problem isn't the young kids because they aren't hear anymore. Seems to me he is calling out his veterans for playing like crap. Again, I think when I GM comes in and gets acclimated to the team, we will see some interesting things happen. No one other DR was willing to let this team sit around and rot.

5 years until playoffs? If that is the case, then Lofantiane should just be fired now.....

Making the payoffs is now the goal? Is that how we judge the rebuild? We could have kept Pom ,Vanek and Miller and been there in one or two seasons with the right 4-5 moves...lol

Many of the vets have been the main problem this year whether RR or Nolan has been behind the bench. Let's face it, it's just going to be a long and painful year with an eye towards the payoff in the future. In the interim, There will be lots of  ..... .... :censored:....

How long did it take the Habs? Callaway is right on.

The Habs didn't trade away all the veterans they had who were actually worth a damn for draft picks, kept their overpaid and dead wood around, and called up half their farm team.

Darcy crapped the bed in how he managed his rescources, and unless a new GM can turn some of all those draft picks into actual NHL hockey players, who can play hockey *now*, 5 years is not unrealistic.

This team needs to add 2-3 2nd and 3rd line veterans in the off-season, cause if they don't, this is what we'll be looking at next season too, and the season after that.

Darcy basically turned this club into an expansion team. Expansion teams usually take more than 5 years before making their first playoff appearance.

Not saying I like it, but at least he's gone.

And this always was my problem with the full tear-down. It was completely unnecessary.

No only unecessary, it was complete lunacy - No team ever managed succesful rebuild, flipping their entire roster over with youngsters and draft picks, no matter how high those might have been.

I've said it a million times, you need veterans to play the youngsters alongside. And our veterans are worthless.
