Stafford had a very good game. I have seen Ehrhoff play like that in a while. Only one glaring Myers gaff that I caught.

I only saw one awesome Staff play, and I definitely saw him float once or twice. But I wasn't concentrating on him tonight.

Ehrhoff ALWAYS plays like that.

I saw one giant Myers gaffe and otherwise didn't notice him one way or the other.

Leino looked good. I mean, I can't stand what he did to this team when he signed, but damn, he looked good.

And they need to keep Miller at whatever cost. Enroth might bring a better return anyway.

I was happy John Scott did not take the bait from Toronto and get into a needless fight. Liked the physical play from the team. Nolan's influence can be seen already. I am a happy camper about the Sabres for the first time all season.

I see they took an assist away from Stafford, I thought for sure he was the one that tapped it over to Ott on the 1st goal, must of been the Leaf player.

Best game so far this season. Team has a different level of energy. The cloud of doom (Darcy) has lifted and with the departure of his minion, the players looked like they were enjoying themselves. There is hope that this season can be entertaining while the young guys grow into their roles.

I agree. That was the best they looked all season. Ennis and Troop I thought played well. I would even say Scott and McCommick played good to.

You and me both. I have been waiting a very long time for Regier to be fired and was more than pleased when LaFontaine and Nolan were hired. I thought Nolan had been blackballed out of the league.

Playoffs here we come!

I highly doubt that but at least there was effort tonight which is more than I can say for the first 19 or 20 games. Like I said before if u are gonna lose fine but at least play hard and have the other team actually earn that victory!

Stafford's hit and his pass to Ott were flat-out awesome.

The tap to Ott on Ott's goal was nice (totally deserves an assist there), some stellar PK, and he carried the puck strong to the net several times.

He looked like a new player.

Everyone is rightly talking about the effort, but the other thing that was night and day better was the passing.

Looked like those who said Rolston had them gripping their sticks too tight might have been right.

How bout dem apples?

First, the negatives...

Ristolainen was the only player who looked like he didn't belong on the ice. Still soft in his zone, out of position....I would send him down tomorrow and let him sauté a bit.

Pysyk was given a big workload, but he was pretty tentative in his own zone. He is good positional, but really needs to grow some hair on his chest. Nolan leaned on him though.

McBain is what he is. I would really look to get another vet in here who could play a physical #4/5 to help Pysyk and Zadorov mature their game.

Girgensons.....for a guy built like him, he is knocked off his feet so easily. It HAS to be mechanics, because he just flops all over.

The positives...

All of the vets who have been going through the motions showed up.

Leino....best player on the ice the first 30 minutes. What an effort, and he laid out a guy in open ice that I went dyslexic on and thought was Scott.

Tallinder....played the body all night and seemed to take the "A" to heart.

Stafford....driving to the net, setting up camp on the PP, hitting guys.

Ott....pesky and how about the diving on the ice to clear on the kill.

Myers....awesome game. He made a couple traditional bonehead giveaways, but was mad when he did it instead of crumbling. Played the body all night.

Ennis....another clogging lanes, and diving around on PK.

Ehrhoff....what a game. He was jumping, pinching, getting back, leading. Way to take over.

Miller. It was nice to see Miller give up a traditional softie on a lateral from far out instead of getting bombarded with guys not clearing or out of position.

It looked like a simple message....clog the shooting lanes back, but don't hesitate to jump in transition. It's better to make an aggressive mistake than to collapse and hand it to the other guys.

Other than getting gassed the last 5 of the 1st and a few stray weak shifts, it was a nice effort. I look forward to seeing Weber and Zadarov in for Risto and McBain.

They overall looked like a completely different team, everyone seemed to at least play 75% of their shifts. Scott actually played like we had wanted him too. Ott and Stafford certainly showed up. Although held scoreless Ennis looked determined especially in the 1st. Everyone looked better in general, Hodgson backchecked, Ehrhoff didn't look like the only competent D-Man, even Myers only made a few mistakes and used his body some.

Keep it up Buffalo.

I'm not being nostalgic when I say that it was nice to see Nolan behind the bench again. I forgot how much he interacts with the players and is animated in "the right way". Perhaps he set my expectations for how a coach should act behind the bench, but when I see players wanting to fist pump the coach, and the coach doing so like the player was a peer, that is the kind of total team interaction I expect.

I agree. I was upset when he was fired the first time we had Nolan as coach.

If Nolan can get Stafford to play like that game in and game out he actually might be worth that money!!!!

I'm not ready to believe yet. Staff played balls-out for the first few Rolston games, too.

(I mean, I'm not ready to believe in Stafford. Nolan, I have NO problems with him.)
