GM Speculation

Fenton would be my preferred choice of the two.

Not trying to be snarky here. Why would you have a strong choice at all? I can't see how any of us could develop a strong, defensible position given none of us know a damned thing about what these asst GM's are really doing for their teams.

Benning to me is the perfect guy.

Comes from a Cup winner

Comes from an organization that should have intimate knowledge of team due to division rivalry and history

Knows the area

Can't say I know much about Fenton but why would I choose the number two guy from a perennial contender when I can choose the guy from a champion ?

Depends. You take the guy you think is truly better for the job. The championship is only one piece to a much larger puzzle. Whoever they pick, I still hope they pick their own assistant GM.

Did I say that I would be upset if they picked Benning? Did I say that Fenton is the clear choice or anything along those longs? You're making something out of nothing.

Calm down big guy. I'm trying to drag out of you what sort of info you may be using to gather an opinion. I can't see how I could have one and I'm curious what someone else may use to justify theirs.

I can't find anything on what Friedman said so there's a chance we're debating over something that was never said.

Garrioch (this board's favorite person) said in an article that Benning is the clear favorite but that PHX's Treliving is still in the mix.

Researching the types of moves that appear to be directly linked to the assistants in their tenure. A few hours of googling. Won't give you much, but it gives you enough to at least think about it and pick your own favorite.

This is a discussion forum, opinions are expected.

By the way, wouldn't be surprised to hear about it Tuesday.

The upside to Fenton is that he's a completely new voice and we'd get some fresh thinking. Benning has already been with the Sabres for several years; Nolan has already been the coach before; Kevin Devine is still the scouting director; and PLF is a former Buffalo star in a new role.

I'd love someone completely new who might challenge the assumptions all the current guys have been working with. A bunch of Buffalo guys who all know each other and are super comfortable around each other could lead to groupthink.

I'd prefer to shake things up more than I think Benning would.

But, like the other posters in this thread, I don't have super strong feelings on the matter. It's a total guess and I'm only comparing "Concept of [GM candidate]" notions.

Well I'm glad we've found some common ground. :P

This makes sense to use to base an opinion.

At this point just hire somebody. Pick your guy and let's start rebuilding this thing. IMO the sooner we get the management crap situated the sooner we can turn the page. Same thing with Miller. Enough already.

I understand the sentiment but I wouldn't want to exclude someone because they have a history here. Like you, I really have no feel about each individual but based my opinion on the success of their respective organizations.

Who cares? I've never posted misinformation on this board so why would i start now?

Anyhow, you did a terrible job searching. Here is a link http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/buf140104.html and theres also a video on cbc.ca.

Gah! He has the stink of Darcy on him. Burn the heretic!

What he said. On top of that, Fenton has been in charge of the draft for Nashville and he has consistently found good talent. Especially late. Not just one guy, he's found several. Good talent evaluator.

Thanks for being a dick for no reason. All I said is I can't find anything. Wasn't insulting anybody. Relax.

However, you did insinuate that he was either incorrect or making it up.

Is it stink, stench or stank?

Let's just go with 'foul odor'.

You said there's a chance we're debating something that was never said because "you couldn't find anything". You might want to reevaluate who's being a dick.

If he's the right guy, he's the right guy. But if it's up to me, we try to find someone completely new.

I even like the idea of someone from the Western Conference, which has been the more competitive conference for a while now.

I wouldn't be opposed to give that rumored Kings Head scout a longer look

Like I didn't see everybody disagreeing with me coming.

I said there's a chance. Never said anything definite. Seriously. I'm not the antichrist you guys really want me to be.

I never once said anything personal until Foligno came in with it. Happens every time.

Seriously: my original post was not a knock or an insult. There was no links posted, and something that big is usually all over twitter. Not search turned up anything. I saw TFP's report, but they didn't say anything about Friedman in the tweet so I kept looking to see if anybody else mentioned. Nothing. So I said that we might be talking about something that wasn't said. No crime there. If you see something wrong with it, it's just because you're just on the bandwagon of always taking a side against me.

The idea that we aren't in a great position to judge properly is true.

But I have researched as much as I could on these guys.

Benning's calling card seems to be "good soldier in a winning organization."

I am not overly impressed with his drafts as a Sabre, or a Bruin.

Couple that with video I've watched (bruin training camp press scrums, the insider video where they decide to trade Seguin), and I get the distinct impression that he is an NHL old boy candidate, as opposed to a leader and innovator.

I'd prefer innovative and fresh.

That said, I have also come to understand this is a different management scenario, and it is Lafontaine's role to supply the people skills, and the tone-setting - the leadership skills that, too me, Benning seems to lack.

It may be that Benning has the work ethic and the contacts to implement whatever direction PLFsets out.

We need a thread where every time this crap happens it immediately goes into that thread. Call it the "Little ######" thread or something. We are all guilty of back and forth bitch fests but there should be a separate place for it.

I'm relaxed. Just don't be an idiot. I listed who said it and where they said it.

I wouldn't have posted it if he hasn't said it.

Let's really pray that the part in bold isn't true.

I don't care about the credibility of people under usernames. I normally believe what I see people say. I looked it up to hear exactly what was said. Didn't find it. Mentioned it here.

Wasn't an attack. Wasn't an insult. Wasn't anything.
