Hoss Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie1m Hearing that BUF search for GM winding down, a few candidates in process of getting 2nd interviews. Could be done within a couple of weeks.
26CornerBlitz Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 @TSNBobMcKenzie LA co-director of scouting Mike Futa was interviewed by BUF pre-Christmas. May have been last of BUF's preliminary (1st interview) phase. @TSNBobMcKenzie BOS asst GM Jim Benning a strong candidate in BUF but others still in hunt. No final decision made yet but may not be too far off.
3putt Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 At this point though I would like PL F to at least come out and say no matter who we hire in the future TN is our guy regardless. I was skeptical at first about TN but having watched what he has done with this group he is the only option at coach. The fact that he has not publicly had the interim label removed is kind of corny. Can you honesty imagine they bring in Jim Benning for instance and he tells the media that "TN has done a fine job but I will be bringing in my own guy". This is one area that PLF could have handled differently IMO. Nolan should be the first to go. A manager of plowhorses, not a trainer of thoroughbreds. The new gm needs to be able to choose his guy.
sicknfla Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 Nolan should be the first to go. A manager of plowhorses, not a trainer of thoroughbreds. The new gm needs to be able to choose his guy. And who would you like that guy to be? Who is out there that if a new GM wanted to bring in his own guy do you think could do be the "trainer of thoroughbreds"?
Eleven Posted December 30, 2013 Author Report Posted December 30, 2013 This is going to get interesting.
darksabre Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 This is going to get interesting. Cripple fight?
Hoss Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 And who would you like that guy to be? Who is out there that if a new GM wanted to bring in his own guy do you think could do be the "trainer of thoroughbreds"? Absolutely hate this argument amongst fans. "Who is going to replace him?" Not saying Nolan needs to be replaced, because I think the opposite. Just saying that these guys are professionals and they'll find the replacements. I don't want to step on the new GMs toes before he even gets the job. Let him make the decision. I don't really see a scenario where Ted doesn't finish the season as the coach, but the new GM could easily just not renew his contract at the end of the year.

Its true, I would not want to see Nolan get moved out after what he has done so far with this team, I think he deserves to stayBUT I don't think the right move is for upper management to tie the new GMs hands and force them to accept Nolan as the HC, Let Nolan do that by proving he is the right guy for the job and make the new GMs first move removing the interim tag from Nolan and not making him want to bring in his own guy. I don't think the Sabres really intended Nolan not to stay on though in the long term, if they expected him to be just a seat filler til the new GM was hired and he can name his own coach, then I think they would have just kept Rolston around til the new GM was named

Rolston was a dumpster fire and had to go regardless. That said, I think PLF would like to see Nolan stay, and I doubt anyone gets hired as GM who has a particularly negative opinion of Nolan.

I don't think I have ever heard PLF say or imply that Nolan is here til years end (not saying I'm not wrong though and he did say it), only that it will be the new GMs decision if they want to keep him or bring in their own guy.
Hoss Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 I don't think Nolan was brought in for any certain time period. I'd like to see his contract, because I'm sure that, even if it's a multi-year deal, it has an easy out for the team at any point. I don't think they were planning on him being around long, but his performance is really going to make the new GM think twice.
dudacek Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 Are most of you rather fairly ambivalent as to who gets the GM job? This thread has been relatively quiet as far as opinions on the leading candidates. I'm on the record as not being overly impressed by Benning's personality or his resume, which largely seems to consist of mediocre drafts in Buffalo and being a good soldier in Boston. I'm more interested in a sharp younger guy with an intimate knowledge of the cap and relative player value under it, a commitment to a long-term vision, and a road map on how to acquire the players needed to get there. Botterill and Treliving seem to fit that profile best.

There's a few guys I like more than others, but I don't think any of us has the personal interaction required to make a firm judgment.

Hell I will be the first to admit these guys could be sitting next to me at a restaurant and I would have no clue who they were. Have to trust PLF on this one.

There's a few guys I like more than others, but I don't think any of us has the personal interaction required to make a firm judgment. This precisely. Benning isn't my favorite. Treliving and Fenton are my favorites of those mentioned, but I'm not even a fly on the way in those rooms. I've done minimal research, and am no professional on these matters.

Who is out there that if a new GM wanted to bring in his own guy do you think could do be the "trainer of thoroughbreds"? That is the point of hiring a gm. Its his opinion that matters not mine. On pure speculation, Housely should be considered. His work with the USA jrs was noteworthy. Nolan is a motivator for sure, but I am not convinced he is relative to the young players of today. I would ask those that suggest we keep Nolan regardless, what person would risk his professional reputation and career, taking a job where you do not get hire the main guy responsible for the on ice management of the talent you provide him? I would think the top candidates would rather pass. If he chooses to keep TN then so be it, but it must be his decision.

WHAT?!?!?!?And you call yourself a hockey fan, not being able to spot an assistant front office guy of an NHL team out in a crowd? You don't collect the NHL Assistant front office trading cards?
Two or less Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014  I'm starting to get anxious. Elliotte Freidman last night on HNIC Hotstove said we are very close to naming a GM. He said it's between Jim Benning and Paul Fenton (Nashville asst GM) but from everyone Friedman has spoken to, Benning is the clear cut favorite.

sicknfla Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 I would think it has to be soon. No way we don't have someone in place by Sochi. I would think the Olympic break will be a time that GM's are doing a lot of roster evaluating and the groundwork will be layed for roster movement. I would also either have Miller signed or traded immediately after the break. Really no reason to drag this out any longer.
tom webster Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 Fenton would be my preferred choice of the two. Benning to me is the perfect guy. Comes from a Cup winner Comes from an organization that should have intimate knowledge of team due to division rivalry and history Knows the area Can't say I know much about Fenton but why would I choose the number two guy from a perennial contender when I can choose the guy from a champion ? By the way, wouldn't be surprised to hear about it Tuesday.
