GM Speculation

As I mentioned in the Around the NHL thread: Dec 19-27 might be the best time to ramp up the GM search. There will be a roster freeze (no trades, signings, waivers) allowed in that time which means there will be nothing else going on for PLF and Devine.

Except Christmas. ;)

Certainly. They should get it done BEFORE Christmas and then announce it on Christmas Eve. That'd be a nice early present.

No real new info here but McKenzie is sticking with his "Sabres are in no rush to hire a GM" tune.

Q: What is the latest on the vacant general manager positions in Buffalo and Calgary?

McKenzie:

The Sabres' search continues and they're looking at some time in the New Year, probably in January or February, likely before the Olympics but no absolute guarantee. I thought the Calgary search might heat up really quickly and get done a lot sooner than Buffalo but now I'm starting to get the opposite feeling. While Brian Burke has received permission from the Dallas Stars to talk to Joe Nieuwendyk, he actually hasn't reached out to him yet. There's speculation that Nieuwendyk maybe isn't ready to jump back into the general manager's market at this time and Burke has not yet asked for permission to talk to anyone else. This might be one that carries on for months and maybe longer if they realize the person they want is not available until the end of the year.

Shouldn't the Sabres want to get someone ASAP? They have some fairly major trades to make at the deadline in 2014 (unless they're morons and just want to let those UFA contracts expire).

As long as he's in with enough lead time on the deadline to be up to speed on our assets. But I agree that I'd like one hired sooner rather than later.

Well saying "by the Olympics but no real guarantee" is saying there's a very real chance we don't have a GM at the deadline.

Well, PLF has said that they will welcome trade offers and those offers will be reviewed by himself, Devine and im assuming Kevin Prendergast. Just because we don't have a GM, doesn't mean we're not open for business.

this is my belief as well and would not be surprised if it ends up this way.

Maybe he just should GM himself and get a decent AGM for the financial side of things.

Please no.

I am very good w/ having PLF as the head of the hockey department. He knows hockey and is a great people person. There's not too much of a learning curve with that role for him.

I don't want him learning how to GM while filling the GM role.

I totally agree and this is why I have been saying for weeks that he needs to hire a true GM sooner rather than later. I also have no problem hiring PLF in his current role - but he is not a GM at this stage of his career. Him becoming GM is what I believe will happen but far from what I want to happen.

Super 16: Flames, Sabres work from similar positions

When Jay Feaster was removed from the position of general manager of the Calgary Flames, it meant there were now two such openings in the NHL because the Buffalo Sabres have yet to replace the departed Darcy Regier.

Though it is the same position and the two franchises are relatively close to each other in the League standings, there are a lot of differences about the two jobs and the situations make for an interesting contrast.

Aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh. Feel free to put that in the grammar complaint thread. Although those in the" Nolan must stay" camp probably have at least a twinge of happiness.

Not buying what Friedman said.

Its not what I want but I'm sure if surrounded by the right people he could grow into the job. I'd prefer an experienced G.M. for sure but one only needs to look at Gillis in Vancouver. From player agent to G.M.
