G-Daddy Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 No worries, hopefully Flames have their eyes on Darcy!!!!!!
Iron Crotch Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Having hired Burke last summer, this was only a matter of time. I would guess that Burke will be GM though, so there likely won't be a true competition with the Sabres for GM candidates. I agree. Plus, having the richest owner in the NHL (who has shown a willingness to spend) certainly makes the Buffalo job an attractive one.
darksabre Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 No worries, hopefully Flames have their eyes on Darcy!!!!!! That would be priceless.
MattPie Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 No worries, hopefully Flames have their eyes on Darcy!!!!!! That would be priceless. "That Darcy guy always got the better of trades from us, we should go after him!"

I would guess that Burke will be GM though, so there likely won't be a true competition with the Sabres for GM candidates. Nope. Dreger just said Burke is already contacting candidates and his list will likely include Nieuwendyk (sp?), Futa, Benning, Treliving and a few other names we've seen mentioned for Buffalo. @JoshRimerHockey: Hearing Buffalo Sabres are speeding up process to hire their GM after what happened today with Flames Change. Take it with a grain of salt. This guy is very hit or miss. Mainly miss. I also doubt they would already have been able to react. What'd they do, call every candidate and ask if they want the job? Basically a common sense tweet done too early.

Hoss Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Perhaps. Of course Burke could go through the motions and then decide, "Hey, who's better than me?" Ah, the old Sister Margaret trick to getting a job.
LGR4GM Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 That's...not good for us. Why? There isn't 1 magical candidate that will give them a cup if we don't grab him. LaFontaine has a major head start and we have better assets than Calgary. I think both teams can find suitable candidates and I bet they will choose different ppl in the end anyways. If 1 guy was so much better than everyone else PLF would have already offered him the job. This changes nothing in my mind.
Taro T Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Yeah, Futa is a really interesting candidate. LA has made a complete transformation over the past several years. They've made really good trades and have drafted exceedingly well. I'm noticing that almost all the names on our list of potential candidates are Eastern Conference guys (e.g. Boston, Pittsburgh, etc.). I like having a Western Conference name or two, if only because the west has been the dominant conference for a few years now. LA is run by the 2nd best GM in hockey. Futa's intriguing, but is he fully on the same page as Dean - in which case they should grab him; or is he a product of the coattails. That's the Q Patty needs to answer (assuming he finally gets to talk to him).
26CornerBlitz Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Burke just said several times that (paraphrasing): There is another team doing a GM search (Buffalo), that is the reason we did this now and time is of the essence, especially if there is overlap in the GM searches, and I'll know later today if there is overlap. He also stated that he has already gotten permission to speak to one candidate and is seeking additional permissions. Brian Burke to be interim Flames GM, wants GM to build truculent team When Jay Feaster was fired as the general manager of the Calgary Flames on Thursday, immediate speculation was that Brian Burke would take over as the GM. He will, but only temporarily. In announcing the firing of Feaster on Thursday Burke, the President of Hockey Operations, said he will take over the duties of the GM on an interim basis while looking for a replacement for Feaster, similar to the situation in Buffalo where Pat LaFontaine is running the show, a team he alluded to competing against to find a new GM right now.
Derrico Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 It looks like Joe Nieuwendyk has been allowed to interview for the Calgary job. I don't think he was on our list (atleast there were no reports that I know of). http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/12/12/report-calgary-permitted-to-speak-with-nieuwendyk-for-gm-gig/
nfreeman Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Interesting. The Calgary model would seem to be sorta flipped from the Sabres' model -- i.e. they'll have the experienced senior guy as president and maybe the up-and-coming younger ex-player as GM -- but it does sound like there will be some overlap in the pools of candidates.

Joe is a Flames legend. BTW - you get extra points for being able to spell Nieuwendyk.

Hoss Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Hey! He said I get the pat on the back, not you :P I know, that's why I had to be the lonely guy in the corner patting himself on the back. :(
tom webster Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 I agree. Plus, having the richest owner in the NHL (who has shown a willingness to spend) certainly makes the Buffalo job an attractive one. Buffalo's job is attractive but Pegula is not the richest owner in the league. He is somewhere between 3 and 5 depending on how you do the math.
26CornerBlitz Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Sabres GM job is attractive ‘The new GM will have plenty of flexibility to build the team in whatever way he sees fit. The Sabres have just 12 players under contract for next season and with the cap going up, they will have a massive amount of cap space available. The projected cap for 2014-2015 is $71 million. According to the web site capgeek.com, those 12 players under contract for next season take up just over $30 million in cap space. If the Sabres wanted to spend up to the cap they could spend about $40 million.’
inkman Posted December 13, 2013 Report Posted December 13, 2013 Terrible first post. You have a lot to learn about how we do things around here. And PA kicks Naulter in the groinal region just for good measure. I was in hysterics after your fist sentence.

LGR4GM Posted December 13, 2013 Report Posted December 13, 2013 The main reason Leino and stafford won't be bought out, they need to reach capfloor with all the rookies :D I think Leino gets bought out and I think a RW player is signed in FA to a similar contract. If I were the new gm I would do that. Leino is sour grapes on this team.
That Aud Smell Posted December 13, 2013 Report Posted December 13, 2013 Burke's quoted today (by Vogl) as saying that the Sabres' search creates urgency for him and the Flames. I will say: It's good that the other GM opening is for a team, market that're comparable to ours. I agree with the sentiment above as well that the dynamics of the two searches are sort of the inverse of each other.
nucci Posted December 13, 2013 Report Posted December 13, 2013 The main reason Leino and stafford won't be bought out, they need to reach capfloor with all the rookies :D Then give the money to some other players. If you are really starting over those 2 need to go.
