TSN Insider Trading: Dec. 10

When will the Sabres name a new GM? Bob McKenzie says 6-10 names on PLF's list with the Sabres asking for permission to talk to the LAK's director of amateur scouting Michael Futa.

MICHAEL FUTA CO-DIRECTOR OF AMATEUR SCOUTING

@helenenothelen

Sabres asked Kings' permission to talk to Michael Futa, Kings' co-director of amateur scouting, about vacant Buffalo GM job. (more)

That request is under consideration by the Kings, a club executive said.

If this guy is the one who keeps finding all of the Kings goalies, then he's exactly who I want. Holy crap, there must not be a bad goalie in their system.

I like his resume. Scout, coach, Asst GM and GM. GM of a successful OHL franchise.

Elliotte Friedman: 30 Thoughts (12-11-13)

18. The Buffalo Sabres search for a new GM continues to widen with permission requested of Mike Futa, the Kings co-director of amateur scouting. It wouldn't be a surprise if former Maple Leafs GM John Ferguson, now the Sharks director of pro scouting, is another interviewee.

19. The Sabres are pretty quiet about all this, but one of the interesting developments is Pat LaFontaine isn't the only new face to be part of the process. Joe Battista, the former coach of Penn State's club hockey program, is among those asking for permission and sitting in on interviews. In an administrative position, he helped secure Sabres owner Terry Pegula's $88-million donation to the school and recently left to become vice-president of hockey-related businesses of Pegula's management team. Clearly, Pegula trusts him.

20. Interim head coach Ted Nolan says he'd like to see Ryan Miller stay in Buffalo. Miller looks at Henrik Lundqvist's seven-year, $59.5-million contract with the Rangers and says, "That's the market." Now the Sabres know what it will take to keep him. At 33, Miller is 19 months older than Lundqvist, which is a big factor.

21. As it stands, Buffalo has about $30 million in commitments to 10 players for next season. There's a reasonable possibility that Ville Leino is headed towards a compliance buyout, which would remove $4.5 million. The cap floor will be around $52 million and the Sabres are very clearly worried about fan reaction. What Miller said publicly would turn away some teams, but Buffalo may be different.

Please please PLEASE don't ever credit information to Hockeybuzz. That information actually came from Bob McKenzie.

Been through this many times on this board. Garth is not Ek, nor is he more than loosely affiliated with Ek. Ek fabricates ridiculous trade rumors that never come true. Garth generally just blogs opinion and/or what he overheard from other Canadian reporters. Big difference between the two. Supposedly Garth is a hockey writer for someone and blogs under the fake name "Garth" - I'm sure someone on here must know who he is?

The guy from Wayne's World, duh.

Didn't even know this guy existed until yesterday, but this Mike Futa guy is really starting to interest me a lot. With the way he build the drafts in Los Angeles, with the on-field experience he has had to be in a front office that has made several big trades and are not afraid to add to the roster, his past with success in the OHL level... and all the hockey insiders saying what a good hockey mind he is. Futa coached Jordan Nolan in juniors, and then drafted him for the Kings. He must know Ted Nolan pretty well and that may be the one guy PLF speaks to who would also be open to bringing back Ted as coach next season.

According to the Toronto Sun tonight, the Kings have still not granted the Sabres permission to speak with him though.

Hey. You look oddly familiar.

I have to admit... Everytime I see a new poster, I think they consciously selected Timmy as their picture until it hits me that it's standard.

I don't think there's too much sense in trying to read too much into anyone they interview. Sure, they'll wind up taking someone eventually, but the long list for this search is as much about finding out how other teams operate as it is about finding the new GM. They're going to soak up about a million different ideas when all is said and done.

I'm intrigued by him as well. The Kings seemed to have stocked up a pretty deep team through both the draft and quality trades. I have no clue about the people in their front office but I'd like to see them kick the tires on somebody from the St. Louis Blues as well. That is a team with no superstars but seems stocked to the brim with 7's and 8's with grit, determination, and toughness.

I'd much rather snag a GM from a team like that than a team like Pittsburgh that managed to get good by having 2 of the best players in the world fall into their laps or a team like Detroit that lucked into having multiple hall of famers drafted in late rounds.

Terrible first post. You have a lot to learn about how we do things around here.

Yeah, Futa is a really interesting candidate. LA has made a complete transformation over the past several years. They've made really good trades and have drafted exceedingly well. I'm noticing that almost all the names on our list of potential candidates are Eastern Conference guys (e.g. Boston, Pittsburgh, etc.). I like having a Western Conference name or two, if only because the west has been the dominant conference for a few years now.

Sabres may have some competition:

@TheFourthPeriod

Whoa now... the Flames have fired GM Jay Feaster and asst GM John Weisbrod

Having hired Burke last summer, this was only a matter of time.

I would guess that Burke will be GM though, so there likely won't be a true competition with the Sabres for GM candidates.
