Hoss Posted December 1, 2013 Report Posted December 1, 2013 @SunGarrioch @FriedgeHNIC says #Sens assistant GM Tim Murray may get an interview for GM's job in Buffalo Not a name I know much about. Turning over all stones is a good plan.

millbank Posted December 1, 2013 Report Posted December 1, 2013 If I were able to have a wish come true it would be the Hunter brothers of the London Knights would be hired as coach and general manager of the Buffalo Sabres. I believe these guys would be loved by fan base and community, as they simply hard working no frills hockey men. With the London knights. they have been a repeat winner on ice and at box office for many years now. They have installed a sense of community amongst all in organization from top to bottom, Hunters even taking in players to live with them to mentor as to what is the professional way to achieve a hockey career. Hunter did come up and coach Capitals briefly , but did go back to London as he felt this his family business, but do wonder if Buffalo just might be a excellent fit for these men. I believe they would make Buffalo proud. imo

It not only one individual who the Hunters have taken under their wing, many have been , it a family thing, a passion. I making opinion, not wishing to impose one.

Iron Crotch Posted December 1, 2013 Report Posted December 1, 2013 Cam Russell. Trust me. I agree that we need a GM with a Canadian name. ...Like Cam, Lanny, Stu, or Gord. :D
Sabres Fan in NS Posted December 1, 2013 Report Posted December 1, 2013 I agree that we need a GM with a Canadian name. ...Like Cam, Lanny, Stu, or Gord. :D That would be cool, eh. And not to mention he GM'd the Mooseheads from worst team in the Q to Memorial Cup champions in 3 years. Take off, eh. You hoser.

I get the impression they are quite happy where they are. The night is dark and full of terrors. A Lannister always pays his debts
millbank Posted December 2, 2013 Report Posted December 2, 2013 yes it most likely dreaming that Hunters would leave London. Hunter did in fact reject the Capitals to return to London , stating his desire to continue in the family business. Suppose though innovative people can find a way, certainly having a talk with them would do no harm. Think Hunters and Buffalo would be a great mix. The simply real hard working straight forward people. Their over a decade now of success speaks to it. Hunters wishing thinking not reality. I would love this idea but I believe the Hunter's own the Knights and have no intention of leaving them anytime soon. I get the impression they are quite happy where they are. TrueBlueGED Posted December 2, 2013 Report Posted December 2, 2013 Personally I think I'd cry if the Sabres hired Hunter. The type of hockey he coached in Washington was some of the most boring, bland style I've ever seen. He also seemed to be a "square peg into round hole" type of coach when it came to forcing players to play his system rather than designing his system around his players (seriously, does anybody think it was a good idea to make Ovechkin sit in his own zone and block shots for 60% of the game?). I just don't think sitting in a defensive shell and getting bombarded with opportunities from the other team while hoping for a few mistakes and to capitalize on the counter-attack is how you consistently win.

That's basically the style this team has been playing and failing to have success with. It's not a style you "choose" if you want to win. No thanks on Hunter.
MattPie Posted December 2, 2013 Report Posted December 2, 2013 Team Storm Cloud -- a group of posters that focused on the dismantling of the core, the coach and GM. So this is the situation they've been looking for, eh?
qwksndmonster Posted December 2, 2013 Report Posted December 2, 2013 So this is the situation they've been looking for, eh? Que "It didn't have to take this long and it's sad that we are where we are." Which is a good point but it would've been said with a lot of whining.
tom webster Posted December 2, 2013 Report Posted December 2, 2013 To state the obvious, the longer this goes the more likely PLF will wait till the off-season and this might be the best way to go anyway. The pool of candidates will be much larger and who knows who may become available. The obvious issues are dealing with Moulson, Miller and Ott but while getting the best return is paramount to the future of the franchise, in my mind it doesn't trump getting the right man. If I'm not mistaken, Boston was forced to wait for Chiarelli which led to questions with how much a role he had in persuading Chara to follow him.

How will there be a much larger pool of candidates in the offseason? Because there will be maybe one or two retread gm/coaches who are fired? Plus you may have competition for candidates at that point. I hope plf continues the thorough search but I don't want it to take until next offseason. My guess is either right before Christmas or just after New Years.
nfreeman Posted December 2, 2013 Report Posted December 2, 2013 I too would like to get someone in here this season so that he can be involved in the UFA/trade deadline decisions, get his senior scouting people in place and get some firsthand experience with Nolan.
LGR4GM Posted December 2, 2013 Report Posted December 2, 2013 I too would like to get someone in here this season so that he can be involved in the UFA/trade deadline decisions, get his senior scouting people in place and get some firsthand experience with Nolan. With the current size and skill (I like Devine and Company) of the scouting department what do you think will happen with that? I new GM obviously has the right to clean house or keep whoever they so choose. Any ideas? I too want the new GM in as soon as possible. He needs time to evaluate everyone well before the deadline. I think I was a little short in my prediction of 14-21 days. With that timetable I expected a decision by this week. From the sound of things I would hope before Christmas something gets done but could see it progressing into January if PLF really wants to be ridiculously thorough.
Stoner Posted December 2, 2013 Report Posted December 2, 2013 So this is the situation they've been looking for, eh? Absolutely. Who would trade today's situation for 2008 or 2011? Things are trending in the right direction, and I'm at peace. It's like when you've been worrying day and night about a loved one in ICU after surgery. When they finally turn the corner and are sent to the floor, you can go outside and take a walk and breath. You know recovery is under way.
That Aud Smell Posted December 2, 2013 Report Posted December 2, 2013 Gari-douche from Ott'wa saying Sabres have asked and received permission to speak with AGM Tim Murray.

I'm not sure how the pool will change between now and then. The only difference will be more competitors. The pool will only increase in the sense that recently fired GMs will be available. And if they're recently fired, then they won't be candidates for the job. Have to get it done in-season.

Don Maloney is not the only GM that isn't sure if he will give permission for his assistant to leave. Teams do not want to disrupt their organization in mid season if they can avoid it. Not to mention that there could be a presently employed, highly successful candidate that wants to work with PLF or maybe a coach ready to move upstairs. That being said, I could see it happening around the time frame you suggest when the league trading freeze is in effect if his guy is available.

Teams don't need to give permission to speak with a candidate during the season, while in the off-season they have to. We've heard of many that will, such as Pittsburgh and Boston, but those were gimmies. Both have connections to the Sabres. Poile also supposedly has given Fenton the green light. There is a belief that Coyotes may tell Sabres to wait til the off-season for Brad Treliving though, and who knows how many others? None of us know Patty's list.
