The Bruin connection leads you to one of the often-mentioned frontrunners

I have to say Benning is not my choice: his resume is fine but his personality just doesn't scream "leader."

Great, thanks for the article. Nice quote in there from Patty.

"I did start out with kind of a shorter list, but there have been some recommendations from some very respected people in our game that I felt it was important to keep an open mind," LaFontaine said. "Obviously I would like to identify who the next one is, the right fit, and once we make the decision we want that general manager to be here for many, many years, so I'd rather take the time. If somebody comes extremely highly recommended, it's worth the time to meet those candidates."

This is exactly what I want Patty doing and I have no problem with the process taking a bit of time. Let's make sure we get the right guy in here.

What would you be looking for that would scream leader? I haven't gotten that vibe from any of these guys and I'm not sure how I would. We know their names and the most we see are short quotes from or about them.

I just want someone who knows who the right guys to target are and how to pull off a trade. Hopefully soon.

I guess I have found the transition from Rolston to Nolan like night and day and I want to see the same thing further up the food chain.

Ron seemed like a hard-working, knowledgeable, nice guy; he also seemed dull and uptight.

I couldn't see him being the kind of guy to personally connect with people and inspire them to do things they needed to do to be successful.

Teddy has a charisma — the ability to make personal connections and make people believe.

Darcy had all kinds of smarts, but he never seemed to have a destination in mind, let alone the ability to attract the right people and inspire them to be their best.

As others have pointed out, he was an administrator, not a leader. He was safe and conciliatory, not someone interested in carving his own path.

I don't want another Darcy type taking over.

From my admittedly slim viewings of Benning, he is as limp as Darcy.

Like Darcy, he was a soft, smart, mediocre NHL defenceman; like Darcy (before he got hired in Buffalo), he's been taken under the wing and endorsed by a successful organization.

Like Darcy (pre-hiring), it's hard to see what successes he can call his own.

The best thing on his resume seems to be "he worked for Boston."

He seems more of a good employee than a leader of men.

I think he's a candidate more because he has been a good soldier for the NHL establishment — "it's his turn; he works hard; he deserves a chance."

I want a rising star, not a budding old boy.

Maybe he has all kinds of knowledge and work ethic and it's up to PLF to provide the leadership and the charisma, but Benning just doesn't excite me.

I understand it's just a routine interview, but does this seem like the man to lead us to the promised land?

One thing for sure, when the GM selection is made, 1/3 of this board will love it, 1/3 of this board will hate it and 1/3 of this board will go into wait and see mode.

By year two, 1/3 of this board will be actively rooting for his ouster.

The best part is that you can organize the posters into those categories well before the GM has even been selected, let alone 1 year in

Can I sign up for the wait and see mode before the hiring?

30 Thoughts: NHL thrilled by media rights bonanza (11/27/13)

14. Add Brad Treliving of the Phoenix Coyotes to the list of Pat LaFontaine's interviewees for the GM's job in Buffalo. There is still no firm confirmation of permission to talk to Rick Dudley. But one thing you can be sure of, Dudley will try to keep it quiet. He's very old-school and does not want to be perceived as lobbying for the job.

Check out these cap projections. For those of you who don't know, he is usually right on about these things.

That's not nearly as quickly as many had been projecting. I figured at least 75 in '15-16. It will be interesting to see the development. The only real hamstrings we have right now are Hodgson and Myers. Hodgson will be worth the pay in 3 years...Myers may never be however.

Hodgson is worth it now. I really wish people would stop acting like he got franchise player money.

For real. It's a joke. His contract is very good, and it'll look even better when the cap goes up.

He does just as much as a guy like Alex Semin (actually more), and Semin's making $7 mill.

Semin robbed a bank, no doubt.. That is one bad transaction.

So that $200K in 15/16 really makes a difference to you?

???

You are paying a guy $1 mil+ over market value now. The team is horrible so it doesn't matter if you are wasting cap space. By the time the team has a chance in 2-3 years, he will be getting paid at, or below market value in all hopes given the big rise in cap.

That was the hope in doing that contract all along, but if the new group decides they don't want to hitch their wagon to Hodgson as a top player on this team going forward....good luck unloading him in a trade the next 2 years.

That was my point. Myers....we'd be happy if he plays like a $3 million player with consistency at this point.

Where are you seeing productive 2nd line centers getting 3 mil per these days?

Stepan and Kadri were in the exact same situation with having RFA years left. They both got 2 for 6.

And again....say "productive" all you want. Hodgson is getting #1 ice time on the worst team in the league and while putting up decent offensive numbers, is far from "hard to play against".

If you tried trading Hodgson and his contract today versus Kadri, I'm guessing Kadri and his game gets you twice the return in a deal.

The Rangers and Leafs also had major cap issues this offseason. They couldn't have given those guys bigger contracts even if they wanted to.

You misunderstood. You said you thought cap would be at $75 million by 15/16 and he projected $74.8. I was just wondering if your projections were that precise or if you thought $200K was significant.

Again...put all 3 up for trade in the market and see who fetches the least return.....

I don't think the difference would be nearly what you do. Stepan and Kadri aren't exactly setting the league on fire.

My bad....I didn't see the updated number. He listed it without at 71. Gotcha. Makes sense....those in the know were saying 75 all along, and which is why I wanted the Sabres to clean house before last year's draft and take a bunch of 1st rounders while having $30 million to sign decent veterans in a year that was artificially depressed.

Too late now I guess....
