North Buffalo Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 Grigo actually looked good. Larsson needs to learn how to cover a man on D, but at least he skated. Ducks just looked faster on the puck all night long. What happened to young legs. Actually they were not bad, just made positional mistakes. That top line should have been benched. Sabres forwards don't know how to take away time and space on D. Defense not much better. That game could have easily been 10-2, but Ducks showed some mercy in the 3rd. Young guys at least skated hard. Looked like the D finally got sick of the forwards standing around and started skating the puck out of their own end in the third. Puck support for the veterans was pathetic. two men going after puck, but when it was freed up on the boards there wasn't a third man providing someone to pass too. Pathetic as it sounds Tallinder was the only guy getting pucks on net. McBain has caught Erhoff disease, missing the net and when someone shoots from the point isn't the other D near enough on the far boards to stop the puck when it comes around. It happens way too often. Oh wait, the puck is supposed to hit the net. What a disaster.
DR HOLLIDAY Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 I'll give you the next LA game but I always want to beat Toronto. Even though this team sucks it would be awesome beating the leafs anytime. Agreed, it would be nice to take a wheel off the leaf bandwagon. But it would be a really big upset at this point in time. Sad ###### that is. What? Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Always classic, lol
Eleven Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 And the worst of it all is that how many people bought season tickets to watch this crap. Guess there isn't anything to do in Buffalo! No, that's not why we bought them. There is plenty to do.
Stoner Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 WGR suggestion box idea: Sobriety tests to talk on the air. First up Hamilton and Koziol. Wow. The New Witchhunt. Does anybody from the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce post here?
LGR4GM Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 Can anyone give an accurate assessment of grigorenkos game? I wasn't able to watch but was curious if the improvements I thought I saw were indeed happening... Or did he just get lucky.

I wasn't able to watch but was curious if the improvements I thought I saw were indeed happening... Or did he just get lucky. From what I saw, he was much more aggressive and lot less floating. He has starting going into the corners hard and man does he have a hard accurate wrist shot. His skating while not always consistent, was a lot better. I am impressed. His hustle was better too. If he keeps improving and not reverting back to Staphylesque play, I am going to like it. He seems to understand where he needs to be and is starting to show signs that he is willing to take charge of the puck. I hope he keeps developing.

Nah; he doesn't need to. He knows he's gone and it's just a matter of when. I think he was just honestly venting his understandable frustrations.

I wasn't able to watch but was curious if the improvements I thought I saw were indeed happening... Or did he just get lucky. I liked his game but if u watch the highlights neither goal was great. Watching closely he fans on his initial shot and then on the rebound but the puck goes in. On the second he was given a nice pass and the goalie must of forgotten about him because he was really out of position. I also didn't like his huge celebration after scoring his first. I know you haven't scored in forever but we were down 5 1. Please somewhat act like you've been there before.

Secondly, we need more of it. More life. More passion. Lindy sucked the life out of the team toward the end, and Ron has funeral director written all over him. Darcy is Darcy. Let these kids have fun.

I would have went Joe Thorton and whip out my #### and start stroking.

His initial back hand SOG was stopped by the Andersen and he showed determination by sticking with it to shovel the rebound in for the goal. Good job by Grigs to be right in the crease aka the "dirty area" to score. The second goal was the culmination of excellent play by both Tropp and McCormick to set Grigs up for a beauty of a goal on a nice wrist shot to beat Andersen short side. Grigs did a nice job of going to an open area to make himself available for the nice setup from Tropp. You are somehow critical of the guy on a night when he scores two goals, shows greatly improved hustle, determination, and "urgency" that the coaches and pundits have been asking for. WTF?

How would you react if you're 19, it was your first goal of this season to make it a one goal game, and after being benched for three games? His second goal celebration was more relaxed like "yeah I scored but we're still losing" kinda look.Really impressed with Grigs and know he can get on the score-sheet more regularly like this

He celebrated after his first goal, but that goal made it 2-1 (not 5-1) so there was nothing weird about that. (He's also young and that was his second career NHL goal.) When he scored his second goal (to make it 5-2), I was actually really impressed that his celebration was so tempered. Hope this is a sign of things to come.
Derrico Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 My bad on getting the score wrong on the first goal, I wasn't even drinking last night lol. I just feel like we're willing him to do well. I'm just saying I wasn't overly impressed. Some have said he battled in the corners but I didn't see it. He's been ok but nothing more IMO. Let's see if he goes another 30 games before scoring. Maybe it's been me being team sunshine and kitten too long but I'm tired of feel good stories. I want him to start taking over games as a highly touted prospect. Sure he's showing more effort than stafford but the bar is set pretty low around here.
Huckleberry Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 Offcourse we are willing him to do well, we want all the kids to do well. And maybe it will take some time, but its not like he is playing with highly skilled wingers, those still need to be drafted.

Just when I thought we couldn't find anything else to criticize.

I want him to start taking over games as a highly touted prospect. Sure he's showing more effort than stafford but the bar is set pretty low around here. My worry is that Grigs could be a poster boy for how to ruin a prospect. My guess is he (as well as most prospects) need to be developed step by step, not thrown into the big show are at once. He had a good game last night, but is he becoming a better (and smarter) player? Maybe, but he might regress as well. Last year he struggled late in the year with the Sabres, but did well in juniors and a small bit at Rochester. Where he really belongs is Rochester (where Girgenson was last year). Ramp up his game there, and possibly be ready to make a sustaining contribution with the Sabres next season. He can't learn anymore in Juniors, and the NHL is too much at this point (4th line and its lack of playing time works against him). Unfortunately, he can't go to Rochester and is stuck where he is.

You want a 19 year old kid to start taking over games? Me too, but we'll see a lot more of Grigs's rookie mistakes before we see him takeover games.
