nfreeman Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 How many theories can their possibly be? The bottom line in any theory is how can the team acquire elite talent. Until you lock that down - nothing else matters. In the draft, they give you players at the top. In a trade, you have to give to get. In FA you have to pray someone becomes available. The latter two depend on other teams and circumstance. The 1st one depends on no one else. In fact, the process of acquiring through the draft also helps your trading scenario because at least you have draft picks as valuable currency. Actually, I apologize for the off-topic post. I would like the community to start honoring the thread titles more strictly. This thread is to talk about last nights game, not rebuilding philosophies. As for last night's game. I found it very entertaining. I thought we looked very dangerous on offense at times. We were physical and looked fairly fast out there. The forecheck in the 2nd and 3rd periods was intense. It would be nice to see what the puck possession time was for each period and for the game. Well, I don't think anyone is saying that the team shouldn't be built through the draft. The question is whether things need to get as bad as they are in order to build a Cup contender. I don't think they do; others disagree. Separately: I must reluctantly say that I've been disappointed in what I've seen out of Girgensons and Larsson in the last couple of games. Their shifts have been pretty uneventful. I was hoping at least to see more bodies flying.
FolignosJock Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Good game last night, terrible turnover by myers, idk what that spinorama in the corner was. Entertaining and well on our way to the number 1 overall pick.
Robviously Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Really? Amid all the yelling and exasperation with others disagreeing with you and lack of any support for your theories, I don't recall you putting forth a proposal on how to improve the Sabres other than tanking. Really? You missed the one thousand times I said drafting high wasn't the only way to win the Stanley Cup? Including the times I said the 2006 Sabres were the best team in hockey that year? You must be a very thorough reader.
Iron Crotch Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Separately: Hodgy-Moulson-Ennis produced more offense last night than Hodgy-Vanek-Winger X produced all season. A subtle difference between Moulson and Vanek: Althought they play the same position, one shoots righty (Vanek) and one shoots lefty (Moulson). Might make a difference in line chemistry with Ennis and CoHo, maybe? (I really don't know - just throwing it out there)
Robviously Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Just to interject: tanking may not be the only way to win in the NHL, but it may be the only way the current Sabres can. Those two statements aren't as mutually exclusive as they might seem. The Sabres aren't Detroit where people want to go play because they're contenders (although I haven't heard about that lately). There's this. The Sabres don't have any other options besides blowing it all up and starting over.

Those who disagree with you must have some kind of cognitive problem or other mental defect. It must be hard to be soooooooo smart and have to lower yourself to trying futilely to make those with inferior intellects understand you.

I can see the compete with these guys is very strong and the effort is there but other than battling in the corners nothing really happens. Let's hope over the next year or three we can get some serious talent/finishers in here and that may open things up once the battle on the boards is over. These look like really good third line/possibly second liners who do the dirty work. On a separate note, I've loved Zadarov and Risto's game over the Florida trip and into last night. I know Zadarov got caught out of poistion on one of the goals last night but he still looked strong otherwise. Last night may have been Risto's coming out party.

Might make a difference in line chemistry with Ennis and CoHo, maybe? (I really don't know - just throwing it out there) Maybe a little bit of righty-lefty difference. I noticed more of a positioning/functional difference. Hodgson's a shooter/playmaker, Ennis is a posession/playmaker type, and Vanek is also a shooter. With those guys, none of those guys' bread and butter was to be at the front of the net in the tough areas. Vanek would play that way on the PP, but not as much at even strength. That's the difference with Moulson. He makes his money in the paint (reminds me of Ryan Smyth in ways). Just having that player that drives to the net and brings some traffic with him on that line will help make space for the linemates on rushes and create havoc on shooting opportunities. So now you've got effectively a playmaker, a shooter, and crease threat working together, and indications are that they're well on their way to working well together. I expect them to be fun to watch.

Either you're the only one who can't understand what I'm saying or you're going out of your way to misrepresent what I say. Take your pick. I'm not sure which is worse.

darksabre Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Watching the replay right now, that fake shot pass to Moulson for the first goal was a thing of beauty.

Their shifts have been pretty uneventful. I was hoping at least to see more bodies flying. What I thought I saw last night with these two was inexperience dealing with the puck along the boards. No, noone has gone flying but I interpreted what I saw as experienced pros schooling these two somewhat in puck possession and board play. Larsson and Girgs played with energy, but it seemed to me that they had trouble with battles for thepuck. I think time and ice time will result in these two being excellent players along the wall and in the corners. Granted, putting a skater on his ass would certainly be an excellent substitute for winning a puck battle with sticks and hands.
SDS Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 yes. It is aggravating that every thread has to devolve into a Darcy-bashing, whoa-is-me we are rebuilding cesspool. I'm guilty of responding off-topic too, but can't we talk about the game in the game day thread and leave the other stuff to their areas?

IKnowPhysics Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Of course he's right. Master Blaster runs Bartertown.

Their shifts have been pretty uneventful. I was hoping at least to see more bodies flying. Girgensons is 19 and a year removed from the USHL with a year in the minors and Larsson is also a rookie in the NHL whose career path is likely that of a 3rd liner. I think uneventful games (and thus, inconsistency) should be the expectation. Particularly for Girgensons, I think the bar for what he would bring this season was set too high.
dudacek Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Every game is a learning experience for those two. The skill has yet to surface, but they are getting better. I have no doubt they will be NHL players and that Girgs will be top six. Consider where he was three years ago and compare him to where players like Ryan Kesler were at the same age.
SDS Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 It's very similar to the Lindy Ruff threadcreep from seasons past, and I think you're right. I have come to grips with where the organization is going. Now I just want to follow that progress through games, discussion of the new generation and roster transactions. It is very hard to do that when every thread contains the same discussion from the same posters.

26CornerBlitz Posted October 29, 2013 Author Report Posted October 29, 2013 @DaveDavisHockey Lindy Ruff on @SNHockeyCentral says he promised his Stars team an extra day off if they beat the Sabres.
