thewookie1 Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Although we lost I had fun watching the game, Leino played well and all the youngsters skated like they had hot coals in their skates. Griggy even showed effort.
Doohicksie Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 I think at this point they've bottomed out. I don't think they'll recover quickly enough to play for a playoff spot this year, but they at least acquitted themselves well the last few games. Still, losing after taking a 3rd period lead SUCKS.
Nitro60 Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Lesson learned in the NHL. You create your own breaks. Too many penalties early on. PP still is a train wreck. Can't blame missed calls as to why you lost. St Louis's goal, the defensemen were out of position and the forwards were too high in the zone. Hustle and effort was there tonight.
hockeyhound Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Larrson was all over it tonight; a ton of effort. Larrson and Ennis played well together. Erhrhoff looked like he struggled all night. Hodgson had only 12:10 TOI second least TOI next to Leino 9:56 TOI. Sat their best FO guy. Hodgson 5 of 7 71%. Till next time, Let's Go Buffalo! Wow, I just heard RR talk about how Hodgson and Stafford were benched. Finally some good coaching.
JJFIVEOH Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Was Hodgson benched in the 3rd? I noticed that, only had team low 11 shifts and 13 minutes. Sabres did have a lot of penalty kills in the first two periods. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesome Coach! He's catching on to the BFLO media. I couldn't have done that presser better. Well done! (Can we please PLEASE set this board up to create separate posts instead of merging? I highly doubt there was ever an issue with post ######)
dudacek Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Game thoughts: Tough loss, but that one actually looked like a real hockey game. It may have been the first game all year that we deserved to be in it. Risto was tripped in the corner on the play that led to the winning goal. Not sure why it wasn't called after some of the ticky-tac stuff that was being called earlier. Liked the fact we went with four balanced lines for 50 minutes. Liked the fact that we went to three lines with the game on the line. Was very intrigued with the fact the three guys sitting late were Hodgson (deserved for his play this weekend), Grigorenko (he played OK) and Stafford (overdue) It sure felt like we had more zone time than any game this year. Leino was a factor in that. Ott's best game of the season. Foligno continues to be our best all-around forward. One of the many good, subtle things that Pysyk does is the way he handles dump-ins. Myers continues to blend in. He's not doing what he's capable of, but at least it's a step in the right direction. Clearly an area where Rolston has a plan. Zad as a forward with time running out? Really? Out coach must be trying to create a legend.
Brawndo Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 John Vogl from the Buffalo News is reporting that RR was furious with Stafford and Hodgson and benched them for the third period.

Two or less Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 John Vogl from the Buffalo News is reporting that RR was furious with Stafford and Hodgson and benched them for the third period. We're starting to figure out what lead to Vancouver to decide to dump Hodgson. His "compete" level, as RR likes to say, rivals of Grigorenko.
DumbPuck Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 John Vogl from the Buffalo News is reporting that RR was furious with Stafford and Hodgson and benched them for the third period. While I love the reasoning behind the decision.... I can't help but feel our 3rd period could serve as a big "told ya so" from Hodgson to RR.
Andrew Amerk Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 While I love the reasoning behind the decision.... I can't help but feel our 3rd period could serve as a big "told ya so" from Hodgson to RR. Meh. Still would have lost either way.
grinreaper Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 I'm not inviting a whole lot of schit thrown my way, but did it seem like Tampa's goals #1 & 3 had a little goalie interference that contributed to them?
Doohicksie Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Through this terrible stretch, I watched a lot of individual plays where I just questioned... WTF is that Sabre DOING? There's been less of that lately, and much more Nice play! Good effort! Good decision! A lot of that is coming from the teeny boppers, but also from the Captains. Not that Leino is an all-star, but I think this team missed his veteran presence quite a bit. Good to have him back. So he benched Staff and Hodg? I actually didn't think they were that awful (I guess I wasn't seeing the same stuff you guys were), but I think it's about time RR started some line juggling. Looks like it worked in terms of the Vanek goal.
JJFIVEOH Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Hodgson is our leader in points, he's had a couple of weak periods. Stafford is our leading whipping boy, he's had a couple of weak years. I'm still trying to figure out why one was able to get away with it for two years while the other a couple of games.

You pay cherry pickers $7.00 an hour, not $4.5 million a year..... Good for Rolston. Darcy can't be happy....and you know what, this is a nice FU from Rolston to Darcy. If you can't get me talent or guys that want to be here...I'll sit your prize signing. This is going to get juicy. My prediction is the whole thing implodes for good the Toronto weekend. Black and Pegula have NO clue what is about to happen. That arena is going to be 15,000 Toronto fans....and if the Sabres lay an egg, that will be the last straw.
Derrico Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Haven't read much of the thread yet and really don't want to come off as too much sunshine and kitty or whatever especially after this collapse. Having said that I thought risto and zadarov looked very very strong out there, especially considering they're 18. I liked Girgs game too.

If he wants Hodgson to take over as the leader of this team, I think benching him for being weak for a few periods is good. My point was, if he's going to go that route, why the hell did it take this long for Stafford? I have never ever seen an athlete get away with going through the motions for so long while still having a job. Not sure what to make of your Toronto prediction.

I think he has been very upset with some of the veterans and enough was enough. Ott woke up the past few games. McCormick has been grinding and actually contributing. Foligno looks to have decided he wants to be something in this league. Even Myers is giving more. The kids look pretty good. The past 2 games effort reminds more of what we saw the 2nd half of last year. Sure, you are outmanned, but if you give an honest effort and make it hard for the other guys to get ground...we will at least respect you. This happens a lot. Rolston doesn't want to show up the guy who gave him his job, but at a certain point, the favor is over. I think Rolston is a bit of a pisser underneath his outside blasé. I'm glad he's waking up. If you don't want to muck in the corner, or come back hard, or grab your guy, then sit down. He knows if he goes out the door, it will be a while before he gets a NHL head gig. I have Toronto circled as D-day. The Leafs are rolling, Sabres fans are losing money hand over fist in the resale market and this is their chance to get some back. There are a solid 4-5K Leaf fans there on a regular basis....I think the building is at least half full of Leaf fans this time, and the noise level probably goes 75/25. It is going to be an eye opener in my opinion. One thing that Pegula actually said off the cuff that was funny and I agreed with when he first bought the team was when he was asked what is the first thing you want to do at the arena...and he said something like.."Make sure those dirty Canadians aren't down here for the Toronto games."....something to that effect. He was being funny, but it was true. That might be the wake-up call.
LTS Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 I didn't mind the bench for Stafford and Hodgson, but he seemed to take Grigorenko with him. Grigerenko seemed to be playing the kind of game we've been hoping he would. I saw him near the boards, no kidding! The only thing I was thinking about is that the Sabres just are hitting the last 10 minutes of a back to back game. Shortening the bench to 3 forward lines could come and bite them in the ass. I think the forwards tired out a bit. Still, things looked better, even if for a weekend.

I hope Rolston is waking up to the fact that this is his ONLY chance to make it as a coach in the NHL, which is his dream. I would say the last two games, if actions speak, seem to indicate Rolston is willing to make the decisions that will keep him in the NHL. Looking forward to watching that part of the drama unfold. And it looks like I was wrong on Stafford. Dude just doesn't want to work. You know, I'm getting sick of Paul Hamilton.
Hoss Posted October 27, 2013 Author Report Posted October 27, 2013 Grigorenko has looked like a legitimate NHL player the last two games. Probably the first time he's put two consecutive games together at this level. It's time to let him play. If you're going to punish Hodgson right now then Grigs has to go to the top six. Either put him on the first line (might be too much pressure but right now who is really paying attention?) or the second line.

qwksndmonster Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Fun game to watch, I'll post my observations tomorrow. The short thread was nice. Didn't have to sift through a lot of wrist slitting for the good stuff. Good work gentlemen.
