Hoss Posted October 25, 2013 Report Posted October 25, 2013 I'm not sure why you said we wouldn't know if New Jersey won. If you go with what I suggested originally that they include the Devils in the lottery, you'll know if they do win it. The league would announce them as having the #1 pick. That's my whole premise. New Jersey needs to be included in the lottery (if they do miss the playoffs) and everyone needs to be informed if they do win it. By doing that, there's an extra sting from the punishment for the Kovalchuk contract. So here is a quick summary of what I said earlier. If New Jersey is included in the lottery (and they should be), the team that finishes worst in the league has a 25% chance of getting the #1 pick plus whatever odds New Jersey had of winning the lottery. No, they probably wouldn't announce it. There is a separate "event" that isn't aired in which the order is chosen. Then the team logos are placed in envelopes for the lottery show. So the league would likely have NJ in the lottery event to keep the odds the same, but they wouldn't announce them as having the pick so they would avoid any confusion. I get that it would be a nice way for the league to get an extra dig in on NJ, but I highly doubt they would do that just to avoid confusion.

I think that little bit of drama with the Devils would actually get a few more people to watch the lottery results. The league will mention it when the time comes.

shrader Posted October 25, 2013 Report Posted October 25, 2013 It likely won't matter because I see NJ finishing somewhere around 8 or so which would kill this drama. That's a tough division. Pittsburgh and Washington will probably be locks and I have a hard time seeing the Rags stay towards the bottom. That would only leave 1-2 spots open for them. So the big questions wind up being if Columbus and the Isles can continue their rise from last year and if Carolina can finally break through. On that note, I've seen a couple people mention the 7th or 8th spot. I wonder how long it will take for the new playoff system to set into people's minds.

I meant 8th overall pick, not 8th in the conference.
SwampD Posted October 25, 2013 Report Posted October 25, 2013 He led them in goals last year. I think you are being sarcastic so I don't know how that applies. I think it's a dig at the people who don't want him like Liger and... I'm sure there's some others. Yep. Doesn't NJ have to be included in the drawing because that is their place in subsequent rounds?
sicknfla Posted October 25, 2013 Report Posted October 25, 2013 That's good, cause at this point I'm pretty sure Regier has the IQ of one, though I may be insultning a fine animal. That was good
krt88 Posted October 25, 2013 Report Posted October 25, 2013 yeah but why do we decide to completely suck in the wrong year? This years draft class is OK but not great and there's no clear cut #1 guy. Totally sucking last year would have been nice and in 2015 would be great too.

Totally sucking last year would have been nice and in 2015 would be great too. Definitely. In the middle of two great drafts. But I do think that Reinhart or Nylander could be two VERY good pros. Heck, there is always a chance they turn out better than anybody from the other two drafts. I want Reinhart.

Vanek, Miller, and Ott likely gone next year...I'm pretty sure we'll be in the thick of it for #1 next year too.
ALF Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 It felt good to even beat Florida on 10/25. Losing would demoralize the young players and fans unless we could get another Wayne Gretzky. Just take any pressure off the players and coaches and see what works for next season.
JJFIVEOH Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 I just love the irony in seeing all these posts about Darcy's inability to draft while the vast majority of this board continues to praise Zadorov, Risto and Girgensons like there's no tomorrow.

Unfortunately, Darcy's perception will lie with Grigorenko more so than those you mentioned or Pysyk and Foligno.
Robviously Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 Unfortunately, Darcy's perception will lie with Grigorenko more so than those you mentioned or Pysyk and Foligno. Not just because they picked him, but also because they presented him as a new franchise player and shoved him into full-time NHL service way too soon. He's already a symbol of this franchise's incompetence, regardless of if he ever develops into a decent NHL player. They could have used #12 on Girgensons, used the later 1st round pick on someone else (Henrik Samuelsson), and had an extra 2nd round pick too.

Robviously Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 There's that hindsight thing again. It's not hindsight because I'm not even saying they did the wrong thing in drafting Grigorenko. I'm only saying they had options and I was saying this on draft day two years ago. Either way, they've done a horrible job with Grigorenko in the time since he was drafted.

I don't know about you, but I was in agreement with many others in that there was still some glimmer of hope of making the playoffs at the start of last season; and the Sabres were in desperate need for centers. Had they missed the playoffs while deciding to let Grigs stay in juniors........... you fill in the blank. It was Darcy's fault for not doing something about the lack of centers. Did he do that purposely because he knew what the future would hold? Who knows. But Grigs was kept up for a reason.
Hoss Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 When the pick started getting closer I wanted Filip Forsberg first and then Grigorenko second. I was ecstatic to have him then, and I still am. It's quite ridiculous that people on here are giving up on a guy that has been playing with John Scott and Cody McCormick. Give me a break. He actually looked good last night when he played on a line with some talent. Give him a coach who has balls and he'll be a good NHL player.

And then all possible good reasons for having him up were discarded when they burned a year of his contract and RFA status, played him 5 minutes a night on the 4th line, and then sent him back.
Captain Caveman Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Bettman will stack the ping pong balls to make sure we do not win the draft lottery. Where can I get a tinfoil hockey helmet?
nucci Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 The Sabres stated goal is to get as high a draft pick as possible. It has been said going back to last season and pretty often, which is surprising for any pro sports team to admit. They are succeeding beyond their wildest dreams right now. Why are we upset? This is what they want...suck so bad we get the #1 pick in the draft. Long term it might be for the best if they end up like Pittsburgh/Chicago and not like Edmonton... Short term it sucks, but its not like they didn't let everyone know what they were trying to do. I think people are upset because they didn't expect it to be this bad, but the Sabres are probably thrilled Because it's not what I want.
Hoss Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 I've been on the fire Darcy train for a while, but I've always said I'd be okay with keeping him through this season and then firing him after. He's a master salesman. There's a solid chance that a new GM would just want to move the players and make this his own team while Darcy will take the time to get the right deal. I'd prefer it if he weren't around for another draft, but the feeling I get now is that he'll be around for at least 2-3 more years. I don't like that idea, but I'm okay with him staying through this season.
