John Scott Suspension: 7 Games, Will Not Appeal

Loui Erikson is nearly a PPG guy, and he plays on a Most Favored Team. However, he is not North American.

John Scott has no prior history, and is not a dirty player, but decidedly is not out there to play hockey.

7 games.

IMO, there is no way to watch that hit, whether in real-time or in stop-motion, and say that the principal point of contact was not the head.

Also, IMO, this is precisely the sort of predatory garbage the league is working to eliminate. It's late, it's high, it's dangerous, and it adds no value to the game.

That his is not late. The only thing wrong with it is that Scott is 8-10 inches too tall. I'm serious. If a shorter guy makes that hit it adds value to the game and is on the highlight shows for the right reasons.

But you know what? Scott is 8-10 inches too tall and he's not allowed to make that hit so he shouldn't.

The word to watch for out of the Sham will be predatory. And I agree with that aud smell in that the head was principle point of contact. The picture he posted illustrates this clearly. He came in from the blindside and was in my opinion slightly late. Borderline late. milliseconds late if you will. But nonetheless he will be deemed late in the Shams world.I believe Shamaban is most likely pissed at the P.A. and Kaleta for appealing Pats suspension and we all know he shows no favourable treatment to the Sabres in most cases. Hell he's probably pissed at the Sabres for Pats appeal. No suspension history for Big John but in this case that won't matter, its the sabres.

I have no idea how anyone can say this was a legal hit. Maybe you *want* it to be legal (at least Swamp is honest on this), but the fact of the matter is it was an illegal hit for all the reasons discussed. Seriously, take off the Sabres blinders.

Has anyone seen the still photo T.S.N. has posted ? The shot is from behind both players as Scott skates thru the hit so taken from the centre ice angle. It looks to show scotts elbow fully extended upwards which to me isn't how it looked in the picture Aud smell posted. It almost seems photoshopped. Maybe its his jersey that I'm seeing but looks like elbow. If this is one of the photos Sham looks at Scott is toast.

My reoccurring thought here is, what has changed with John Scott?

His rep prior to coming to Buffalo was that of a reluctant monster. Big but doing the beast role because he had to, not because he enjoyed it. Places like Hockfights always labeled him a reluctant tough guy. A "nice" tough guy if you will. To the best of my recollection he was never one to go after non-fighters, and really, only went after fighters because that was what was expected of him, what he was explicitely paid to do. Heck, he got criticized in some corners for not being "active" about seeking fights. Now, in the span of 6 weeks or so, he's picked a fight with a star, and laid out another. There is nothing in Scott's history to suggest this was in his game. What has changed? And why?

The photo on the BN article basically shows that he had his elbow up enough to cause a hit to the head.

TSN was using that same photo. It doesn't accurately depict the prinicipal point of contact, which is shoulder on chin. Scott had his elbows down, but didn't get his shoulder low enough to ensure that he hit Erikson in the chest instead of the chin. This photo was taken about a quarter second after the hit, when Scott brought his elbows up to balance himself after the collision. I suggest watching the video.

Vogl just tweeted that, while he has no priors, he was told by Player Safety after the TO preseason game to keep his nose clean.

Exactly this:

Anyone remember when this would have been reported as "...Ericksson was admiring his pass at centre ice when John Scott caught him with a thunderous check. He may need a few games to clear the cobwebs."

The game has changed.

Hmmm, maybe Ron did deserve the fine.

I sure do. The NHL is going the way of the corporate NFL.

The NFL's hand is forced because they're getting sued left and right. It's because America has been hell bent on "safety" for the past decade.

And the Chris Neil hit on Drury was the first thought that came to my mind. The TSN broadcasters tried to spin it that Drury was "admiring" his shot on goal...I didn't hear anything about Eriksson "admiring" his pass.

That said, I still think the hit was late enough to warrant something against Scott. I have a feeling that he'll get more games than he should. I can hear Shanahan now..."he should know that he's much bigger than the guy he's hitting, so he should have backed off".

That hit is illegal in the same way that your buddy who is a cop drives you home because he pulled you over drunk and doesn't want you to go to jail and get a DWI.

Is it really illegal if enforcement is selective?

Also, if we really wanted to be cavemen about this: Don't forget that Lucic concussed Miller. This would be an eye for an eye.

I am 100% on board with being a caveman.

In terms of NHL Rules, I'd like this to be a 10 game suspension or more. 20 would be fantastic.

In terms of sweet sweet cosmic justice, I'm just glad that the bruins will be a little worse off for the next few weeks. In my view, a significant suspension is warranted... but so was the hit.

That is my major problem with the excessive use of still frames and slow motion. You can use those tools to paint just about any picture you want. The only thing that tells the full story is watching any play at full speed.

If someone blindside checks Vanek or Hodgson to the head in the same fashion, will you feel the same?

11 games takes him out of both Leafs games next month. I expect to see 11 games.

Vanek shouldn't have been admiring his pass.

Like it or not, these types of hits are being legislated out of the NHL. The problem is the inconsistency of the Shanahan and the DoPS.

Yes. Legality and enforcement are different concepts, and I think you know this.
