26CornerBlitz Posted October 31, 2013 Author Report Posted October 31, 2013 Does Scott get credit for time served? Yes.
Nitro60 Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 First offense 7 games? SO next time a first time offender gives a head shot and does not get 7, but 3 or 4 games, I hope the NHLPA demands that Scotts lost income be returned. I shall not hold my breath. I like hockey but those in charge of the NHL run it like a rinky dink operation. The other major sports leagues have structured penalties. Shanahan is a total joke as is the majority of Commissioner Bettman's staff.
wonderbread Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 No rhyme or reason to the penalty. This league is a joke.
MattPie Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 So what's the final math? 5 games + 1 (not being on a favored team) + 1 (doing something bad to Kessel earlier this year)?
Eleven Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 Just like John. But I didn't intend to injure anyone--oh, wait, neither did he.
deluca67 Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 Scott tries to injury Eriksson and ends up with the equivalent of a 28 minute penalty? A lost opportunity to send a real message.
SwampD Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 Scott tries to injury Eriksson and ends up with the equivalent of a 28 minute penalty? A lost opportunity to send a real message. That is really funny. … if slightly annoying.
deluca67 Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 That is really funny. … if slightly annoying. Nothing funny about it. With any luck, a few years from now some of these draft picks the Sabres have are going to pan out and be really good hockey players. I would hate to see any of those players suffer a serious head injury caused by being targeted by a John Scott type goon.

As long as none of them admire their passes in the neutral zone, they don't have to worry about it. I gotta admit that I find your reaction to this whole thing just,… weird.

I'm just not willing to excuse away a goon and his actions because of the jersey he wears 4 minutes a game. What's weird, IMO, is any fan that doesn't feel embarrassed every time Scott steps on the ice.

dudacek Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 Everything Shanahan said in the video about the hit and what was wrong with it made sense. What does not make sense is why those circumstances are worth seven games and other circumstances are worth nothing at all. Whatever.

I'll still be glad he's on the ice the next time we play Boston and I'm more embarrassed by Ennis' 18 mins TOI.

I hear you, except I don't believe the Bruins would pass up the opportunity with or without Scott's hit. Look at the Lucic hit. Oh, and the Bruins would still go unpunished. So I still say Linde had it right.... RUN 'em.
X. Benedict Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 I agree with the suspension....but it is just crazy how the NHL gets to this decision. Ruling: Erikson is check-able. Scott had elbow down. Principle point of contact is head. There was a follow through. So the check isn't late....the elbow isn't high....the head is down (but stationary) ........because Scott has had 240 clean hits, he already knows how to hit people in this position without hitting the head (really?). Louie is injured .... I have a lot more trouble with hits from behind, or ones where players leave their feet and lead with elbows into the head.....those seem to get 2-3 games for first time offenses.
wjag Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 I wonder if Scott's suspension is a hangover from Kessell. Who gets suspended next? We need SOMETHING to talk about

I'm completely baffled by the explanation and you pretty much nailed my reasons. I'm fine with the suspension and I thought they'd go with the blindside stuff, but that didn't happen. Instead we get a lot of what sounds to be randomly made up. That thing about the 200+ hits had to have been the funniest of all. So he has thrown a lot of checks, most of which came BEFORE this cutback on hits to the head head. They could have all been contact to the head for all we know, it just didn't matter at that point. Do they even think before they put these things out there?
LGR4GM Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 Again my problem is never that these guys get suspended for this it is the wild inconsistency and erratic explanations surrounding the suspensions. It is painfully obvious the bigger the star and the bigger media market the team the lower a suspension becomes.
Eleven Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 Scott tries to injury Eriksson and ends up with the equivalent of a 28 minute penalty? A lost opportunity to send a real message. I don't think he tried to "injury" anyone (and yeah, I've read the entire back-and forth, and no, I'm not jumping into the fray); he was just reckless. That said, a suspension for being reckless is warranted, IMO, BUT... Again my problem is never that these guys get suspended for this it is the wild inconsistency and erratic explanations surrounding the suspensions. It is painfully obvious the bigger the star and the bigger media market the team the lower a suspension becomes. This is mostly right. And it's a real problem.
FolignosJock Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 My bet is that it gets reduced to three games after it goes to to Bettman, Scott will still end up missing 7 games but only be docked pay for three.
LGR4GM Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 This is mostly right. And it's a real problem. I think the variable to this is if the player was injured severely it throws a snag into the "big star, big media market, no suspension" plan.
26CornerBlitz Posted November 1, 2013 Author Report Posted November 1, 2013 @Real_ESPNLeBrun Also good stuff here from @WharnsbyCBC on NHL suspensions in the opening month: http://www.cbc.ca/sp...h-in-nhl.html … @SNHockeyCentral NHL 2013-14 Suspension Tracker, with all video: http://bit.ly/1a57EdA @sportsnet
