SCOTT FACES HEARING WITH NHL TOMORROW: http://sabres.nhl.com/club/blogpost.htm?id=22090&navid=DL|BUF|home

The NHL is cracking down on hits to the head and Sabres forward John Scott will find out first-hand how severely he will be penalized for a hit he put on Boston’s Loui Eriksson on Oct. 23.

Scott faces a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety in New York City on Thursday. The in-person hearing allows for the League to suspend Scott for at least five games. He's already sat out three games.

Since the start of the season, eight players, excluding Scott, have been suspended by the League for a combined 35 games. Four of those suspensions are a result of illegal hits to the head and total 18 games, including a 10-game suspension to the Sabres’ Patrick Kaleta for hitting Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson on Oct. 10.

In RR's Presser following today's practice, lots of discussion on the Emphasis of getting rid of Head Shots in the League: http://video.sabres.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=472529&catid=1373

30 Thoughts: NHL GMs want teams to pay for players' violations: http://www.cbc.ca/sports-content/hockey/opinion/2013/10/30-thoughts-nhl-gms-want-teams-to-pay-for-players-violations.html

Interesting stuff from Elliotte Friedman's 30 Thoughts with lots of Sabres' related content.

GMs take a serious look at allowing the league to fine organizations, coaches and themselves for the actions of their players.

In a (highly unofficial) poll of eight GMs last weekend, all said they would be in favour of such a proposal, though a couple pointed out they wanted to hear the NHL's plan first.

But, as one said, "The time has come."

Two specific incidents over the past two weeks brought added momentum. The first was John Scott's hit that concussed Loui Eriksson. The second was John Tortorella's comment that he'd continue to teach the play that led to Alex Edler's suspension.

"The one he was suspended on we're teaching that," the Canucks coach told Vancouver reporters. "The league just happens to believe it's suspendable." Suffice it to say that didn't go over well.

Sabres GM Darcy Regier, who supports the idea, suggested only the organizations be punished.

"If we get fined, my owner is going to be talking to me and I'm going to be talking to my coach," he said. "We can handle it internally."

I expect a high suspension. I can Shanahan's voice already... "Despite John Scott being no repeat offender, we think that the hit was so violent that we had to come up with this 10 games suspension." And it makes me mad already

Has the league ever left a player in limbo as long as they have with Scott? Whether the hit was illegal or not, nobody should have to wait this long for his hearing.

I wonder if Scott has a case with the PA for a greviance. Suspension without hearing. He's been suspended for what, 2 games now? And no hearing at all. I can't imagine that was part of the CBA.

I heard last week on WGR (sorry no link) that Scott was given the option of a next-day hearing or a hearing when the team was in NY to play the Rangers. He chose the latter.

"Following an in-person hearing, the National hockey League's Department of Player Safety has determined that John Scott has committed war crimes, and has been assessed supplemental discipline, including hanging at dawn."

Milbury is the definition of the word 'hypocrite'. What made it even worse was Pierre and Lucic on the bench talking about dirty hits. I agree with Stebb, the double standard presented by the tools on NBC regarding the way both teams reacted in their respective situations is extremely aggravating.

At most Scott should get 3 games. That's IF Shanahan is consistent, which we all know he won't be. The tools on NBC make Scott out to be a knuckledragging ogre. If anybody looks at his history he has never been one to throw cheap shots or illegal hits. He's here to fight and he only fights players who are willing to fight back. There are many more players in the league notorious for throwing cheap hits all the time and rarely get called. A few of them were in this game tonight. Making an issue of WHEN a coach puts a line on the ice is totally absurd! Did it ever occur to the NBC idiots that our 1st round pick from last year was on that line and he needs to get some ice time? Did he happen to notice the offensive contributions that Scott had tonight? ###### NBC, I'm so glad we're not on the schedule again until January.

Now, we can all get ready to compalin about Shanahan's inconsistencies when Scott gets 7 games tomorrow.

Despite not having a prior record, (spin the wheel) John Scott is suspended for........7 games. So is Chara exempt from contact to the head because he's 6'9"? Was Lucic responsible to make sure that Miller's head wasn't the primary point of contact? How does Dubinsky get nothing for a match penalty and high hit on Koivu?

Losing Scott for 7 games means nothing. My frustration lies with the inconsistency.

Hmm, just got back from trick or treating with my boys and after reviewing the video again, I agree with everything said. But the players union better defend Scott because this is not what was agreed to.

However, I am going to keep beating a dead horse, Chara and Lucic and the Bruins et al have to be held accountable for their illegal checks and stick work to the head.

There are others Chris Neil etc. I hope Pegula or Miller give Scott a nice bonus. P.S. Bruins fans I am betting this was payback, make no mistake.
