And, while I'm ranting, every ###### winger Darcy signs to the roster is a natural left-sided player. Does he not realize that some guys are better suited to the left- or right-side and it is necessary to strike a balance between the two? Ott, Vanek, Foligno, Zemgus, Ennis, Leino, Scott, Matt Ellis, Colton Gillies, ... all natural left-sided players. Who do you have then to play the right side? ###### Stafford. Great. Throw a king's ransom at him then. ######. Darcy's incompetence is nothing short of stunning.

This may actually be my biggest complaint about Darcy the team builder. His eye for talent is good, but he lacks a basic understanding of how that talent should fit together. Case in point being his refusal to fill positions with players who are most comfortable playing those positions.

Starting with the well discussed summer of Drury/Briere, Darcy quietly rid this team of every legitimate NHL center while no one seemed to notice. Was forced to trade Kassian for CoHo since it was obvious we had no centers. Was forced to pay a king's ransom to a very average CoHo since... we had no other centers. Was forced to play an 18 year old kid who was woefully unready since... we had no other centers. Was forced to pick up and play a journeyman (Porter) since... we had no other centers. Was forced to play a left-winger (Ennis) out of position at the pivot since... we had no other centers.

###### you, Darcy.

Minor quibble: paying Hodgson 2nd line center money is hardly a king's ransom. Carry on with the Darcy bashing otherwise.

Let's play a game.. tell me what's different in the following pictures:

Game thoughts:

  • Liked the battle, we threw a lot of good hits tonight.
  • In terms of forecheck, probably the best effort of the year.
  • When the transition to being a good team starts to occur, it will occur because of the growth of players like Girgensons.
  • Flynn also played hard; that line made an impact at times
  • Larsson finally showed some of what had them excited in camp, glad to see Rolston recognized that and moved him up a line.
  • Disappointed that was at the expense of Grigorenko, who moved his feet and didn't look like his usual wet Kleenex on the boards.
  • Power play showed very little again; after a good initial impression, I'm starting to sour on McBain.
  • Really liked Drew Stafford's effort at times tonight, but he is horrible at getting the puck out of our zone at the wall.
  • Tallinder was a welcome addition. When Myers is with him everything looks much calmer.
  • That second line has to start scoring; our lack of offensive skill is painful. What has happened to Tyler Ennis?
  • The Wild made more nice passes on the Pominville goal than we do on a three-game road trip.
  • Odds are we have to break out offensively sometime. Have yet to see any signs of it though. I have never seen the Sabres look this challenged for this long, not even the Nolan years.

For starters, he's playing the wrong position ;)

Somewhere Ruff is laughing.

I believe that would be in Dallas.

It's not like the Sabres didn't warn people they would stink. If this is a ground floor rebuild then I guess this is it for the next year or two. Who are we targeting with the #1 pick, and maybe one or two more first round picks?

Problem is the 2014 draft class isn't that strong and most likely targeting Reinhart. Now you go to 2015 and the talk has been about Connor McDavid for years already. But there's no guarantee we land either even if we finish last with the draft lottery.

FWIW, the new Ancient Aliens was sort of a let down. They just rehashed older subject matter.

Sorta like our Darcy thread?

Well to be honest, here is to hoping Tallinder makes Myers better just enough, for other managers to start believing he will be a good asset for them.

And I am especially looking at edmonton here, i want eberle or yakupov for him.

Game thoughts:

-Do they not practice passing?

-Our Dmen are exceptional at shooting into the body of the nearest defender. They rarely miss those guys.

-Another good effort by the Goal Tender squandered

-Is it possible to play the whole game in your own zone? I'm beginning to think so.

-As bad as they played, they had a shot. What does that say about that great Minny team NBC was gushing about.

-I wonder if JP looked up at Darcy's box when he scored that goal. JP certainly put a lot of rubber on net last night.

-Whatever they are being taught on the PP aint working. That was just plain sad.

-With all the practice they have playing with an empty net, you would think they would be getting better at it. So far, not.

-Weber and Myers are in a race for most negative. Can't decide who is playing worse at the moment.

-90% of Vanek's shifts are wasted. No zone time pretty much negates his ability on this team.

-PK seems respectable. So there's that.

-Outshot someone.. So there's that too.

-Flynn played well last night

-What happened to Ott? His game is all but D-E-A-D.. Do you think first line responsibilities or "C" responsibilities have killed his game?

Girgorenko looked a lot better last night. His line was clicking and he had some opportunities and some good battles.

Flynn finally returned the form I was excited about all summer. He had some really nice chances and was able to cash one in.

Zemgus will be good but he over commits sometimes and falls over on some board battles, stronger legs and experience and he will just be better. So far he has played really well but I still wish he was in Rochester getting 20minutes a night.

Stafford is just as clueless as Myers. He makes 1 good play and then 2 bad ones. He always seems to shoot directly into the goalies center.

Myers is the worst defender at point shots I have seen. Everything is into the legs of the opposing forward.

Ehrhoff... where are you? I don't notice you being bad but I don't notice you being good either... pick it up.

There is no reason Rasmus Ristolainen should be benched for McBain or Weber at this point. If this is going to be the norm then send him to Rochester and let him play on NA Ice and learn.

Jhonas Enroth wants to be Sweden's GT badly and he played really well last night. He needs to work on his rebound control and deadening those high shots but he has great positioning and reflexes.

Cody Hodgson was a delight to watch last night. He actually battles and shoots. Keep developing Cody you're are only hope.

So Rolston had supposedly benched Weber for poor play, but not Myers, a player drawing in 4 times the salary?

And is it just me, or is it insane to be paying $1.7 million this year for Weber? LOL

I had forgotten until I went to Capgeek.com to check some salaries - but the Sabres were paying Jason Pominville for his performance last night - $795,000 of his 2013 salary is covered by the Sabres. LOLOLOLOL!!!!!

Sabres are dead last in the League, and already 9 points behind the Maple Leafs.

Lots of complacency on the team - and I think much of that attitude originates at the top with Terry Pegula.

I completely agree here. When management gives up on the season before it starts, when it is thought no one loses their jobs , either players or management, or coaches, cause there are no expectations of winning....this is what you get.

Even in the back to back 2-14 years of the Bills I had moth hope than this squad.

Lots of noise about how there was no official tribute for Pommer.

I was at the game where LaFontaine returned, and do not recall an official tribute (but the crowd sure gave him one). Was anyone else there? Do you recall differently?

I was there, no tribute but he got a standing O for the pre game skate. Pommer was half the player Pat was, he didn't deserve it (especially considering his comments about our choice of captaincy, trying to be cute...)

I was there for the LaFontaine return. No official tribute or ceremony that I recall.

I don't understand the outcry either. In fact I think giving a tribute to a guy who isn't retired, didn't win a Cup here, etc. would be lame as hell. We'd be accusing the Sabres of back pedalling and wishing Pominville was still here.

I'm glad they didn't make anything out of his return.
