Member Berries Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Ive got to say, even though id rather have a tooth pulled than watch this crap every other night, its great seeing so much composure and awareness from pysyk. Diamond from this pile of $#!T season so far

sabre snipe Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Blackhawks sat back after taking the two goal lead with their 3rd game in 4 nights. Ran outta gas. Hopefully that's not the reason why we started playing well, but I have a feeling it is
hockeyhound Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Good effort; way to win the third. Hopefully the kind of effort it took to control the period is imprinted on their minds. Wow, if they can play like that for 60 min., I have no doubt we'll see a string of wins soon. Let's Go Buffalo!
CallawaySabres Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 the thing that really sucks is that this team is just a mirage because when Miller and Vanek are gone, watch out
hockeyhound Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 the thing that really sucks is that this team is just a mirage because when Miller and Vanek are gone, watch out That hasn't happened yet; until then, I hope Miller and Vanek continue to lead the way. Let's Go Buffalo!
JJFIVEOH Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 That hasn't happened yet; until then, I hope Miller and Vanek continue to lead the way. Let's Go Buffalo! Yup, one game at a time.
dudacek Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Game thoughts: Looked a lot like the Detroit game: we played like we were in awe in the first and got better as the game went along Or the Hawks got tired and lazy since it was a back-to-back for them and they are that much better; either way, we didn't quit tonight like we did against Cbus. Cody Hodgson was the Sabres best player for the second game in a row. It's been a while since we had a guy who could pass that well. He was frequently matched against the other 19 and held his own. Foligno took a step back tonight. Damn, we need that second line to start doing something. There were many moments when the Hawks just toyed with us. Grigorenko looked a step better than his last game. He moved his feet better. I like it when he and Girgs play together. Grigorenko seems intimidated playing with the veterans. When they play together, if you squint really hard you can see a future three years down the road. I'd feel better about the kids being up though if we had a real first line and a real shutdown line. Then Rolston could cherry pick their ice time. Ryan Miller continues to play as well as I've seen him. He gave us a chance. First time in a long time we actually threatened with the goalie pulled. Like it or not, tonight was exactly the game Tyler Myers and Ron Rolston want Myers to play. Ott played well, but he's not quite talented enough to complete that first line. Ott, Stafford, Foligno, Ennis, Leino, Myers and Ehrhoff have combined for one goal and one assist after six games: two freaking points! Bash our lack of talent all you want, but the past history of those seven suggests they should have 20! What the hell is going on? Should we be blaming Rolston? Who's going to start the pool on the first win? The first three-goal game?
Two or less Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 The first W is coming Monday. Agreed. While, i don't want to put too much into the terrific third period by the Sabres as I feel like it was more Chicago running out of gas (3rd game in 4 nights, frustrated early by Miller which im sure put a big toll on them) then it was Buffalo just stepping up and delivering pressure, but whatever the reason was, this Sabres group must feel they got robbed of a point tonight. And not many teams go into the United Center and leave thinking they deserved a point. Despite the god awful record, i think they will see the positives from this game and will carry them on to Monday night.
rickshaw Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 one reason miller 1st period 20 shots...11-12 scoring chances trade miller ..he sucks..he is over the hill...not elite, enroth is better, .lol .. Take a look at the winning goal. Why is Miller on his knees for oh, about ????9 seconds? As good as he may have played he does not get a free pass on that goal. Ott is getting suspended for that hit. We may finish last this year but hey, we may win the suspensions game!!!!
CallawaySabres Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 As much as I don't think Ron R is responsible for this mess, coaching HAS to come into play at some point here. This offense should NOT be as anemic as it looks so far. This whole teacher thing is fine and dandy but I think the goal here is to find a GM with some foresight, good coaching ties and an ability to bring in players through FA.
Rox11 Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 I'm not giving Chicago a pass for playing back to backs (3 in 4); they didn't have to leave home. Buffalo gets some credit for some real solid play in the second & third.

This offense should NOT be as anemic as it looks so far. This whole teacher thing is fine and dandy but I think the goal here is to find a GM with some foresight, good coaching ties and an ability to bring in players through FA. I agree with this. Examples of regression, not growth, abound, beginning with Foligno, who looks clueless. Ennis is playing out of position, which hamstrings the second line. Ott is not a first line winger. The D, save for C.E. and Pysyk, is a mess. All of these (and many others which veteran posters have pointed out much more eloquently than I can) are things which need to be addressed by the coach. This is a lost year already, so at least show us some growth in the kids! The biggest issue that is not apparently being done (based on what we can all see) is to teach Myers how to play defense. I'm afraid Dudacek is correct in his post just above, that Rolston and Teppo are pleased with the type of play from him we saw last night. To me, poke checking with a long stick and playing backup goalie on the ice are not the way to play the position. We now know he'll never be a physical beast (witness how he got blown up by Sharp last night when Myers tried to initiate the contact!), but he never seems to use the body or front players and tie them up near the net. The result is way too many goalmouth scrambles in front of Miller when Myers is on the ice (literally, quite often!). It is frustrating and painful to watch over and over again. Rolton has been dealt this hand by a disastrous GM, but he needs to step up and do some better coaching.
TrueBlueGED Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 If you line up for a race against a Corvette in a Civic, you're going to get smoked. It doesn't matter how hard you press the gas pedal, or if you're a better driver than the person in the Vet. I'm not a fan of some of Rolston's decisions, but at the end of the day this is a team with one first line player and arguably only a couple second line players.
Jsixspd Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 It's astonishing that the always-rebuilding Buffalo Bills have played 5 games, and have more wins than the Sabres do after 6. Looked to me like Chicago went into "prevent" mode in the 3rd period - that's what made the Sabres look better. The Sabres were completely outclassed for the first 2 periods - Corsi number was -35 after 2, as I recall, which is disgraceful. An average goalie in the net instead of an elite goalie like Miller - the score would have been 4-1 or 5-1 at the end of the game - a blow-out in other words. Shots disparity was again brutal - Buffalo has one of the worst D's in the league. Another 40 shots against game. No goalie can stand up against that, game after game. We already saw Miller miss a game from the pounding - it could easily happen again with 35-40 shots against, night after night.

We may finish last this year but hey, we may win the suspensions game!!!! you are calling that a soft goal.. come on ! nine seconds on his knees? butterfly goaltender on his knees...oh my ..lets not talk about the great stops he made in a 40 shot game with maybe 20 scoring chances? is he out of position on ocassion ...yes ............BECAUSE his d s--ks so bad he has to gamble too often.
DHawerchuk10 Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Just thinking about the Sabres worst season 86-87(aside from their first two expansion years)... That team had some characters to go along with future Hall of Famers. Those games were exciting to watch even with prolonged losing streaks. There is absolutely nothing with this current roster to hang your hat on for the future. This team 110% personifies Darcy's demeanor. I have never felt so apathetic about hockey as I do right now. I've been through some extremely lean years (such as 86-87) as well. What scares me the most about this year, as you point out, is that I am totally apathetic and emotionless. I could easily take losses, if the team showed some frustration and passion instead of acting like a bunch of buddhas out there. There is nothing worse than not caring that we lost. Trying to stay positive...Lets Go Buffalo!!!!
Wyldnwoody44 Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 you are calling that a soft goal.. come on ! nine seconds on his knees? butterfly goaltender on his knees...oh my ..lets not talk about the great stops he made in a 40 shot game with maybe 20 scoring chances? is he out of position on ocassion ...yes ............BECAUSE his d s--ks so bad he has to gamble too often. Yes i agree, it was a cross ice PP goal to Kane of all people.... Miller deserves no blame at all in this one.... As a matter of fact I don't think any goalie could be criticized for any goal this year for our team it's been the only constant.
LTS Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Yeah no kidding I can't remember a Sabres team this bad. Hey Tyler Ennis forget those stupid total hockey commercial about gloves and sticks and worry about getting your game back on track because he looks bad. Because he's filming those in between periods and they are distracting him? If you line up for a race against a Corvette in a Civic, you're going to get smoked. It doesn't matter how hard you press the gas pedal, or if you're a better driver than the person in the Vet. I'm not a fan of some of Rolston's decisions, but at the end of the day this is a team with one first line player and arguably only a couple second line players. This is arguably the same team as last year except for Girgensons, Ristolainen, and McBain (who all look better than what we had) and they are playing worse and less competitive than the end of the season last year. I get your analogy but something Rolston is doing is not sitting well somewhere. Yes i agree, it was a cross ice PP goal to Kane of all people.... Miller deserves no blame at all in this one.... As a matter of fact I don't think any goalie could be criticized for any goal this year for our team it's been the only constant. Exactly. What's even more crazy is that Miller actually had his glove HIGHER than necessary. I am sure he's thinking that Kane is going to go for the top shelf and in fact he put it just over the pad. So, for once Miller carries the glove higher and he gets beat lower. Not much you can do there. This game was better than I expected at the end. Right now this team looks like they are pressing a bit too much. They need patience and to let things develop. It's not happening. Guys are still dumping pucks in when there is no chaser. They are not on the same page yet.

I get your analogy but something Rolston is doing is not sitting well somewhere. I'm not sure I buy that Rolston somehow became a worse coach over the offseason. I was saying down the stretch last year that the way they were gathering points was unsustainable. You can't rely on near miraculous goaltending and opportunistic scoring while getting shelled for a long period of time--the lopsided play will eventually catch up to you. We're seeing that now. I also think Freeman is spot on with his point about other teams playing down to us. It's too early in the year for that to happen now, so we're still getting A-games. Also I think you're understating some of the changes. Sekera is better than Risto and McBain combined at this point in their careers. We're so starting from square one without Pominville, who for all of the complaints people had, was a legitimate first line winger.
dudacek Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Shots disparity was again brutal - Buffalo has one of the worst D's in the league. I want to point out the biggest reason for this is not the defensive coverage of the defencemen, but the play of the forwards in the other end. We spend so little time in the offensive zone that our opponent gets to spend 10 minutes in our end that they would normally spend in their own against a team that can actually forecheck and work the boards. Another factor is our poor passing. So many of our breakouts end in the neutral zone because we don't connect. The puck comes right back into our end for more chances.
inkman Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Out of all your years watching Sabres hockey can u remember any Sabres team that pretty much has one guy scoring and absolutely no offense. Every year Miro Satan lead them in scoring
Marvelo Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Maybe I'm delusional but I'm in Coach Rolston's corner. I want him to succeed. Last night I'm choosing to focus on the positive...Cody Hodgson was impressive. He smoked one off the pipe short-handed and made some terrific plays including the move and assist on the Stafford goal. The Sabres pressed the Hawks all throughout the 3rd. I don't care if it was the Hawks 3rd game in 4 days. I'm trying to take whatever positive I can...I like the forward momentum the Sabres created in dominating the Hawks in the third. Pysyk is a smart and gifted D-man and looking forward to him growing into his role and of course our goalies have been stellar this year.
