TrueBlueGED Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 I wish sabs drafted Tomas Hertl "I wish the ____ would have drafted Drew Stafford" - a bunch of fans from other teams circa the 06-07 season.
Iron Crotch Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 There was a point where they could have made some Montreal-like moves and been competitive in one year rather than three. With a good GM, yes. Down here in Nashville, the Preds dropped to 3rd from the bottom last year (in part because of injuries). So Poille traded Marty Erat for Filip Forsberg, signed 5-6 free agents, was lucky enough to get Seth Jones in the draft... instant "rebuild." I'm not saying the Preds will be great this year, but moves like that give the fans hope. Poille didn't come out and say "sorry fans, we're going to suck... nothing I can do about that." IMHO, that is borderline ridiculous for a GM to say.

SabresBillsFan Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 So you think we're going to be competitive in three years? :P ;) No not want you plan to trade your two best players in Vanek and Miller. I have never seen a team that has absolutely no scoring in all my years except for Vanek. He has almost a point on every goal. There have been many bad Sabres teams in there 40+ years but this might be the worst of all the teams. At least some of Buffalo's bad teams games were entertaining and at least u had some guys that could score. This team so far hasn't shown either. I don't think this should be called suffering this is worse than that. This is going to take a long time to clean up.

SabresBillsFan Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 :worthy: :worthy: :worthy: :worthy: Poile has been doing rebuilds and had good teams to work with for a ton of years and I don't think he's ever put together a Stanley cup team even when he was with the caps and had a ton of picks to work with. Not a fan of Poile or Regier. Buffalo needs a guy that knows talent and how to build a winner. Neither Gm has that!
LTS Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 Sacco had most of those guys too. <_< My point was having players makes the difference. A coaching change with less talented players isn't going to change the world. I'm not sure how much better the Sabres get having Roy as coach over Rolston. Sacco is now with the Sabres.. look at that.. they are terrible too.
JJFIVEOH Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 I like your eternal optimism. At some point though reality will set in. The seven teams that picked before us in the past draft are 14-11-3 right now. We are dead last in points and goals for. And yet our way of "rebuilding" is the right way. None of those 7 teams has their 2 best players in position to leave. All of those 7 teams have better prospects than us. All of those 7 teams would beat us 9 out of 10 times. this team has relied on fans like you for too long. People who will stand by them no matter what. Your a dying breed. People have had enough. Look around the arena. As for Hertl. Watched the game last night. Kid has more skill than any player on our team not named Vanek. He will be doing just fine by end of December. Based on your theory of how long it takes players to develop he should be a 80 goal scorer by 23. Don't patronize me, I said MOST players don't find their way until early to mid 20's, you can't take an exception to the rule and prove me wrong. And you haven't even proven me wrong yet. If his talent was so damn evident, why did he not get picked until 17th? Wow, that's quite a stat...... all the teams that picked in front of us are playing 500 hockey. Take away the team that's 4-0 and the teams 2-6 that picked in front of us are 10-11-3. Not exactly a convincing number. In the last 3 years, hasn't Toronto start 4-0-1 and 9-2-0 and missed the playoffs both times? You do now we're only 5 games into the season, right? Don't give me this 'people like you' ######. I've been critical enough of this team, probably overly critical at times. That was when the team was loaded with veterans that were going through the motions. Perhaps you choose to ignore that fact, or maybe you just don't remember. This is a totally different team trying to go through an accelerated rebuild with players who wouldn't usually even be on the ice yet. It's hypocrites like you that will bitch about both sides of the story simply because that's all you're good at..... bitching. And make everybody else miserable in the meantime. If you get this carried away with a ###### sports team, I really hate to see how you deal with reality.
TrueBlueGED Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 My point was having players makes the difference. A coaching change with less talented players isn't going to change the world. I'm not sure how much better the Sabres get having Roy as coach over Rolston. Sacco is now with the Sabres.. look at that.. they are terrible too. I'm just gonna go ahead and say they'd be the exact same team. The same goes for Bowman, Quenneville, Laviolette, Tortorella, or Al freakin' Arbour--the coach of this team is 100% irrelevant.

Sacco is now with the Sabres.. look at that.. they are terrible too. I understand your point and certainly agree with you. Coaching is also a factor with regard to system, discipline, structure, and the level of respect a coach commands. Roy > RR every time.
Taro T Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 [quote= 'SabresBillsFan' timestamp=1381506162' post='513065] No not want you plan to trade your two best players in Vanek and Miller. So you didn't watch the Sabres in the late '90's? 53 46 66 Those were the top point scorers' totals in '97, '98, & '99. Impressive, huh?
JJFIVEOH Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 We all knew going into the season that this was an inexperienced team. I expected rookie mistakes. I expected the younger players to have a rough night here and there. I didn't expect this lack of effort, nearly team wide. My expectations for the team this year were miniscule; this team isn't even that good. Instant gratification? Where were you in 1970 when this team was founded? I was here, watching them, being thrilled that Buffalo had a team in the N.H.L.! Patience? I have been following the team with high hopes for 43 seasons now. Please don't lecture me on being patient. Oh, and why should the players put forth any great effort if all of the fans and media are against them? They are supposed to be professionals and are being highly paid to be professionals. All they need to do to get the fans or the media back on their side is to start playing like they mean it. I can give the team a pass this season if they lose 80% of their games, but not if they keep going out and giving a 80% effort. You obviously missed the point with your misguided rant. Of course the fans and media need to get on their case. But 5 games into a season with a bunch of kids that have barely played in the league? Did I mention nine players have less than 100 games experience? Seriously, you need to draw the line somewhere, and the vast majority od Sabres fans and BFLO media have no clue where that line is. For Christ's sake, everybdoy cried about wanting this team to go through a rebuild, now they're only 5 games into the season and all of a sudden everybody is an expert on how good these kids are and what they'll turn out to be? Seriously? I tell you one thing, if I were an athlete and Hamilton used that condescending attitude towards me that he did with Foligno and Myers last night, with his belittling questions, he wouldn't be getting any interviews with me until backed the ###### off and treated me with a little respect. You all need to make up your minds, You wanted a rebuild, you got it. Now that you got it, you aren't happy that it's not turned around after 5 games when most people were in agreement that it takes at least two years. Some might say that it's not a total rebuild yet because Vanek and Miller are still here. Funny part about that is, people will bitch that ther aren't traded yet, but if they were they'd bitch about the return they got for them because there wasn't a great market for them during the offseason. All basis are covered and the majority will bitch regardless of the situation.

Not a fan of Poile or Regier. Buffalo needs a guy that knows talent and how to build a winner. Neither Gm has that! the point of his post was the importence of bringing in free agents and established nhlers as part of a rebuild. It accelerates. the process..he was correct ......ground up rebuilds are silly ...telling your fans to suffer is silly..adopting a buisness plan that threatens the revenue streams stability is silly...... after the trade dead line this is ground up. his point was correct.. P I agrre using Poile as a poster boy is debatable... i agree with you 100 percent on the need for a new gm..
Taro T Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 At least we could watch Hasek being awesome. Yep. If you're gonna miss on most of your skaters, lucking into the best goalie of his (and arguably any) generation helps.
Two or less Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 So you didn't watch the Sabres in the late '90's? 53 46 66 Those were the top point scorers' totals in '97, '98, & '99. Impressive, huh? And a hard working team that excelled at all the little things and played with giant hearts each shift.
TrueBlueGED Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 And a hard working team that excelled at all the little things and played with giant hearts each shift. Keep telling yourself that mattered. If those Sabres teams had only good goaltending as opposed to generationally great goaltending, they'd have been just as bad as what we're watching this year.
nobody Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 "I wish the ____ would have drafted Drew Stafford" - a bunch of fans from other teams circa the 06-07 season. I've been saying the same thing for just about as long.

SabresBillsFan Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 So you didn't watch the Sabres in the late '90's? 53 46 66 Those were the top point scorers' totals in '97, '98, & '99. Impressive, huh? Besides Vanek no other Sabres will put up those numbers. This might be the worst Sabres team of all time. They don't have anyone to put the puck in the net. They ain't even exciting to watch. It's absolutely brutal ! Say what you want there are too many questions moving forward with Vanek , Miller and Ott all free agents at the end of the year. Even if you land the 1st overall pick this year this draft class isn't that strong and you can't expect Reinhart to be a savior at 18. He is going to take awhile to develop and I wouldn't throw any 1st pick overall into this mess. It wouldn't be so bad if you had a quality veteran/leader to still be on the team but with possibly all 3 leaving its like starting an expansion team. This is one huge mess and Darcy isn't qualified to clean this up.
LGR4GM Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 I want the rebuild to continue. Knew it would suck and am trying to be reasonable about it. My issue is the vets are playing crappier than the rookies. By the end of December I would expect to see a more cohesive team.
nfreeman Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 Explain then. It's lazy, and weak, and simply incorrect, to assert that the large group of posters here (or any large group anywhere, for that matter) all wanted the same thing

It was a rebuild. And for the most part, at the time, most people agreed with the picks. Perhaps it's just ignorance on your part. Maybe It's just me, but I can't recall many people saying 'leave it alone, the team will get better with time'.
