WildCard Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 A competent General Manager? Regardless of the gm, a rebuild is a rebuild, and it's going to be painful. The only difference between a good and a bad gm in terms of a rebuild is if it's successful or not. Everyone around here seems to be pretty big on our young d-men and some of our young forwards, so, in talking about solely his rebuild so far, it looks promising.
deluca67 Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 I thought they played their nuts off against Ottawa so I really have no idea where your lack of effort comment is coming from Deluca. The Sabres and Sens both played sloppy hockey.
K-9 Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 I thought they played their nuts off against Ottawa so I really have no idea where your lack of effort comment is coming from Deluca. They had good effort in the second half of the Detroit game as well. Lack of compete tonight was entirely predictable after last night. GO SABRES!!!
SwampD Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Vanek is the only legit "Top 6" forward on the roster, he should be the TOI leader every night. Detroit, Ottawa and Pittsburgh, that's a tough way to start a season even for teams with talent. The 0 for 3 is no surprise as is the lack of offense. What is a surprise is the disappointing level of compete and urgency shown over the first three games. You don't need talent to work hard. This is a good point and it tempered my rage.a little. All three are pretty good teams. On another note, I am baffled by the awarding of that penalty shot. I've watched it several times and there is no way one should have been awarded. Oh, well. I just have to believe that someday we'll be good enough to get those kind of calls (I don't believe that, by the way).
darksabre Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 The Sabres and Sens both played sloppy hockey. But it wasn't low effort. You're reaching.
JJFIVEOH Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 The Sabres and Sens both played sloppy hockey. Ottawa has a complete team with a Norris winning D-man and two new scorers. Almost half the Sabres roster has less than 100 games experience. The score was 0-0 with 2 minutes left. You figure the rest out.
dudacek Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 I agree that the team was likely tired tonight. They certainly looked tired. That doesn't change the fact that we couldn't score against a sloppy Ottawa team and we couldn't even mount a threat against the other two teams.
inkman Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 That doesn't change the fact that we couldn't score against a sloppy Ottawa team and we couldn't even mount a threat against the other two teams. Those are the facts. They can't score or mount a comeback, which scoring is usually an integral part of.

I like the way enough kids look to be happy so far. In the face of ugly, I am seeing good signs. Not so much tonight but at other times. All swede no fi(n)knish. The scoring will come. Time to experiment with Stafford with other younger line mates and try hard to find some spark so you can get something for his sorry ass. Same with Tommy though his ass is decidedly less sorry than Drews. Have fun with the lines. Play all the kids, lose all the games and get a top draft pick. Sounds like stage 2
deluca67 Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 But it wasn't low effort. You're reaching. The team is 0-3 and scored two goals. I have no reason to reach. I have been unfortunate enough to be able to watch the 180 minutes of hockey the Sabres have played so far. Over that 180 minutes there have been a consistent stream of plays where the Sabres had opportunities to make plays on pucks, clear the defensive zone, keep pressure alive in the offensive zone as well as making plays in the neutral zone. On far too many plays over the first 180 minutes the opposition had a far too easy time controlling the puck on those plays. It is a early trend that surprises me and my low expectations for this team this season. Ottawa has a complete team with a Norris winning D-man and two new scorers. Almost half the Sabres roster has less than 100 games experience. The score was 0-0 with 2 minutes left. You figure the rest out. It was also Ottawa's first game and it showed. Not to take anything away from Ryan Miller's performance, the Sens seemed just a bit off the entire night. Even Karlsson's goal wasn't a great shot.
SwampD Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Those are the facts. They can't score or mount a comeback, which scoring is usually an integral part of. I can't wait for the next 40/50 goal scorer to become available so I can hear all the reasons why the Sabres shouldn't go after them and mortgage the future on a cancer. :wallbash: Boy, I thought I was okay watching young kids develop. This is going to be tougher than I thought.

bunomatic Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 What did everybody expect from a full rebuild? Heard nothing but 'Trade the bums and start from scratch' for the last two years. What more do you want? I agree. All the whining is surprising considering everyone knew coming in what to expect from this young inexperienced crew. They are who we thought they would be. Why whine about it? Its a rebuild. Get used to it. I'd rather a new g.m. got a 3 year head start when Pegula took over but he dropped the ball on that. So this is where we find ourselves. Deal with it. It ain't going to change anytime soon.
deluca67 Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 I think you and I are watching different games. That's all there is to it. You know what they say, you can have 5 people witness the same event and get 5 different versions of what happened. It's the beginning of the season, they got the season opener out of the way, as well as the home opener and Pens. Let's see how they look against a more reasonable level of competition, Tampa & Columbus and compare notes then. I agree. The "whining" is that little bit of hope dying .
... Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Let's see how they look against a more reasonable level of competition, Tampa & Columbus and compare notes then. Oof. Yeah, compare notes. Wheeee!
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Detroit, Ottawa, Pittsburgh......#14, #13, #2 last year. Rebuild? The new kids are Girgensons (who has 50% of the goals), Ristolainen, and Larsson. Everyone else is a vet or was here last year. Buffalo is only $3 million under the cap with their "rebuild". I agree with DeLuca....I didn't see the Ottawa game however. Today though, nobody skated until Vanek scored and there was only 4 minutes left. The defense is collapsing and not seeing enough forecheck. Even Rob Ray had to say 10 times tonight, this defense is unwilling to lay a hand on anyone. I'm on record saying this is a 14 point team, 20-22 games into the season. When will Pegula just lose interest and not care?
Huckleberry Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 I'm starting miss lindy ruff as coach, atleast he looked mean and had some fire in him. Right now you can put a corpse with glasses on the bench and there would be no difference.
papazoid Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Previous Worst Season: 1971/72 (16-43-19; 51 pts) this team is going to be the worst in the history of the franchise.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 I'm starting miss lindy ruff as coach, atleast he looked mean and had some fire in him. Right now you can put a corpse with glasses on the bench and there would be no difference. Ruff was here for almost 2 full decades and put 5 of the first 6 nails in the coffin. I want to like Rolston, but after 3 games I'm getting nervous he may be a product of Sabres University and the reason this team perked up last year was just a combo of the jammers getting rid of Lindy, and Rolston winging it and having a bit of the Bernier/Foligno/McNabb effect.....
JJFIVEOH Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 I think it's time to take a break. This place has become a broken record and it's only going to get worse.

JJFIVEOH Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Losers complain about a broken record.... Winners invent the 8-Track...... Unfortunately, we're just listeners. But thanks for the comparison, I'm touched.
LaLaLaFontaine Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 You don't need talent to work hard. This is the quote of the day and exactly what i am thinking. We need a William Wallace like motivator on the bench not a corpse with glasses. We need a coach who is able to tell the player to run their heads through the glass and they are doing it with pleasure. I quote deluca67 again: You don't need talent to work hard.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Unfortunately, we're just listeners. But thanks for the comparison, I'm touched. The greatest recording instrument is the mind.
Kristian Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Remember when everybody thought the best solution was to get rid of the 'core'? The "core" wasn't going to win anything, so keeping them really wouldn't have accomplished much. I'll take dead last in the league over 9th in the conference at this point. I agree. All the whining is surprising considering everyone knew coming in what to expect from this young inexperienced crew. They are who we thought they would be. Why whine about it? Its a rebuild.
