With Vanek And Miller In Limbo, Not Sure What To Think

Say the Sabres are really flying with Vanek and Miller and everything is coming up roses. Then, the trade deadline hits and both guys are gone. This is what I can't stand about this season because the fans have NO idea if this is even going to be the team moving forward. I'ts just going to suck if this team turns out to be a mirage because two of the most critical pieces will probably get yanked at any moment (deadline or before.) It just seems as though we will be cheering for hollow wins because it's not really the team moving forward....(if that makes sense).

I agree, I wish vanek and miller were either traded in the summer or resigned. What happens if we're in 7th or 8th come the deadline? I could see us hanging on to them and lose them for nothing next summer.

there will be many changes in the next few years. cheer for the change and the direction the sabres are going in.

and that direction is? lol

Is that change going to be draft picks or players because once Miller and Vanek are gone, you are just adding time to the rebuild if players are not coming back.....

This is true every year, in every sport. You will have a few veterans coming into the last year of their contracts. Enjoy the season like this is the only one you'll ever see, and don't worry about the outside distractions. I guarantee that's what Vanek and Miller will be trying to do. Just enjoy the ride, folks.

If the team is doing well, those guys are more likely to want to re-sign. If they're sucking it up, lets move them for assets that will accelerate the rebuild- skilled, sizable youth, with maybe a year or two in the AHL already.

You guys wring your hands too much, worrying about something that is months away.

Yes this is true, but the difference here is that I don't think there really is much desire to sign here from our top scorer and goalie. It's exactly why I would have loved to have traded Byrd yesterday.

@TSN1050Radio

Bob McKenzie tells TSN Drive that the Sabres are in no rush to deal Vanek but teams like the Oilers could be hot on Ryan Miller.

@SabresProspects

Oilers being interested in Miller is probably worst kept secret in hockey. Best kept is whether or not EDM is on "the list"!

Was about to post this then saw you had already said it. They shouldn't be in a rush, but they better be listening to everything.

I'm rooting for certain players & their progressions, but I can't root for wins until the start of the 2015-16 season

Well, if Mackenzie says the Sabres and the Oilers are in trade talks, I'll get excited, because he's a credible source, but that's not what that quote says.

TSN Insiders report the Oilers are knocking hard on many doors, including Darcy's to get a goalie — Hiller and Miller were the two prominent targets mentioned

The most intriguing news though was from Dreger: the Oiler have finally concluded that they are going to have to trade one of their young guns.

We will take Yakupov off their hands...

I'd rather have Eberle.

I think they see Hall as their goal-scorer and Nugent-Hopkins is their playmaking centre — these are the two most untouchable.

Yak as the one they would most likely be open to trading, but he is also the biggest wildcard and the hardest one to determine fair value.

Eberle and Gagner are the two with the most established value and Gagner is out.

If they are going to make a move now, Eberle seems most likely.

He is also a clutch goal-scoring right winger — exactly what the Sabres need.

We'd have to give up a lot more than Miller.

Which is completely fine if we're getting what we need in return. I'm definitely good with the Sabres making a big, franchise-altering trade right now. And that means something beyond the no-brainer trades of Miller and Vanek.

I am not convinced you would have to give up "a lot more than Miller" to get Eberle or Yakupov. Goalie trades like this are so rare and Miller is playing lights out... I know his contract is coming to a close but I think figuring out fair value for this trade is next to impossible.

If the Sabres had the consensus #1 pick in the draft from 17 months ago on their roster, and that player led the team in goals as a 19-year-old rookie, would you trade that player for a goalie who was going to leave as a free agent after less than 1 full season that most likely would not include making the playoffs?

Of course not.

Don't backslide into trade insanity. We're all pulling for you. No one wants to have another intervention.

That #1 pick has also been healthy scratched twice so far this season and seems to not be in a good spot with the new coach. I don't see Miller for Yak straight up, without an agreement in place between Miller and the Oilers that he will sign an extension with them, but throw in Myers and I think they might consider Miller and Myers for Yak (deal would also probably involve some picks and prospects going back and forth also to even things out)

I am starting to think a little outside the box, but what about the Sabres pulling a Canucks and instead try to move Enroth to a team looking for a younger potential #1 guy? The return wouldn't be as good as what Miller has the potential to get (mostly if he will sign an extension with that team). If a new GM comes in and wants to rebuild quicker (instead of rebuilding with prospects, he would rather reload with young talent) its possible they convince Miller to re-sign along with Vanek

Now that Hackett is in the system that is a workable idea.

Question is, does Miller go back to being an upper-middle-of-the-road goaltender next season when there is no Olympic team to try out ofr?

Miller and Myers for Yakupov only works if Miller signs an extension with Edmonton as part of the deal, and I'd be stunned if Miller were to agree to that. Realistically, you're looking at Miller, [Pysyk or Myers] and [Zadorov or McNabb] and perhaps a #2 pick.

The Enroth idea is intriguing, not least because the salary #s would be much closer. I'd be very happy to trade Enroth and sign Miller to an extension. However, I think it would take a pretty fat package on top of Enroth to get Yakupov -- probably Enroth, Pysyk, Zadorov and a #2.
