You know about show horses, right?

One way I could spin the Pominville development if I wanted to be pro-Darcy: maybe Darcy is flexing his muscles, asserting his position as titular head of the hockey department. Terry calls Ted and says, "We're honoring Pommerdoodle, right?" Ted replies, "Sure, boss, whatever you want." Darcy gets wind of it and lays down the law. It really is a hockey department decision. Do you want your players to be distracted by that? Etc.

Actually, that's all an excuse to use the word "titular."

Pommerdoodle :w00t:

Actually, that seems like something that would squarely fall under the business/marketing department. Why would the GM be making decisions about pre-game ceremonies and promotions?

Maybe it says something about Hamilton's recent behavior, but I'm taking the report with a grain of salt unless there's something more substantial. I'm not saying he's outright fabricating, but maybe running with a source that's not as reputable as could be.

Off topic point: the next week or so would be the ideal time for a Darcy Regier trade. He likes to do it when all the pressure and attention is off him around the league. Right now everybody is focusing on Florida, Philly and Edmonton. What are those teams going to do?

Maybe Darcy swoops in and moves out one of Miller, Ott or Moulson in the next week to two weeks. I think Moulson is here until the deadline, but maybe he decides to strike now before his trade value plumets.

Maybe he swoops in on these Eberle talks? Doubtful. But I could see something maybe happening.

What is the first bolded part based on? Were the Pommer and Kassian trades not deadline deals?

As for the 2nd bolded part -- there are no "Eberle talks." Edmonton is no more going to trade Eberle than Tampa is going to trade Stamkos.

The first part is based on the Hodgson deal and the Vanek deal. You don't normally hear a whole lot about the deals as they're about to happen. When the rumors are the hottest, nothing happens. Obviously Regehr last year was different, and then Pominville was talked about but not the destination. He seems to like to make the move either when it's not expected or a move that isn't expect.

Secondly, there are "Eberle talks." Maybe not between actual NHL GMs, but there are rumors and that's what I'm talking about... And Eberle is definitely far more likely to move than Stamkos ever would be. Poor comparison. I don't see Eberle moving, but that's what the hot talks were in the "rumor mill" that day so I mentioned it.

Hodgson was traded at the deadline, when the spotlight is on all of the GMs.

And DR doesn't give a crap about what fans or sportswriters expect. He makes a trade when he think it's the right trade to be made. There was plenty of talk about Roy for Ott and lo and behold -- it happened.

And you may consider "rumors" to be the same as "talks," but if the GM of Eberle's team isn't talking to other GMs about trading him, there are no "talks." DR could "swoop in on the talks" in the sense that a bunch of yobs in their moms' basements with no sources and no credibility might start "talking" about the Sabres getting in on the "Eberle talks," but that doesn't mean that DR and MacTavish are working out a trade.

Thanks for dissecting my words. Not really sure why you're digging so deep here my friend. I was just speculating as to what he might do. I never claimed there was legitimate talks. Just used the word "talks." It has different interpretations. If I would've said something like "maybe he swoops in and trades for Eberle before these other teams that are after him get him" or something then I'd get your point.

How do you know what DR gives a crap about? It's my opinion that he works best when the pressure isn't on him. They've been out of FNC for a while and the spot light has been other teams. So he isn't under as much pressure now. You think otherwise. Who knows who is right.

And there are examples both ways. You gave an example of a situation where the talks were known (Roy/Ott) and I gave some where they weren't. Who knows.

We're all a bunch of sourceless speculators. That simple.

I'm just responding to your posts. Just trying to have a respectable hockey conversation -- for which I think accuracy is essential.

As for when DR working best when the pressure is off -- I don't see how the pressure could be said to be off at the trade deadline.

At the deadline there are different levels of pressure. You could be a contender who is struggling with injuries or to score/play defense and basically have to make a move if you want to continue contending. You could be like the Sabres will be this year with multiple talented expiring contracts that have to be moved. When the Hodgson deal happened it wasn't talked about because the Sabres didn't fall under any of those cases.

That second one is pretty nice looking actually.
