8th seed or top 5 pick?

You want to get an Edmonton fans opinion on your theory??

Edmonton is considered to be much improved and everyone expects them to challenge for a playoff position.

So yeah, I'll take the Edmonton fan's opinion because as I said, they are going to get better and better as these kids develop.

Making the playoffs & losing in the first round - are you serious? Don't you think Buffalo has had it's fill of that? - and where has it gotten us?

The point of my OP was simple. On opening night do you want to spend the season supporting a team that is going to give you 82 games and one round of exciting, important game hockey or do you want to spend the season supporting a team that gives you 82 games of meaningless hockey with your reward being a top 5 pick?

My opinion. Give me 7 months of good hockey and I will take my chances that a mid-level pick, a FA or two, trade, etc will get me closer to the cup than that top 5 pick. I know, I know - we have failed going that route. That then explains some of my other posts in this thread.

I would rather watch a team for 82 games knowing that they are building towards something greater than a meaningless first round loss. I've seen too many one and done playoff runs in my lifetime.

I would gladly give-up an extra week of April hockey if it led to this franchise playing games in June down the road.

I don't think it's as simple as this because it depends where the team is at. A first round loss for the Sabres last year would be meaningless, but a first round loss for the Oilers could be a good thing. If a team has a young foundation in place, then a playoff loss could in fact be the building towards something you're concerned about.

How does this apply to the Sabres? Unfortunately I still think they're somewhere in between.

Like I have said, mediocrity is hell.

Honestly, I doubt this team finishes anywhere close to a top 5 pick...Probably going to be in the 12-13 range again, Rolston seems to know how to get production out of these young kids and they are improving. Probably not enough to make the playoffs, but enough to stay well away from the bottom of the league, fortunately or unfortunately whatever way you look at it...

One needs to look no further than the Toronto/Boston series last year. Toronto within minutes of advancing. Boston has miraculous comeback and makes it to finals. Once your in anything can happen. I don't give this rebuild/suffer crap until mid November before everyone on here is in an uproar. Night in and night out watching us get manhandled is going to be a joke.

Last year we were all just happy to have hockey back. Season was short and we all got wrapped up in the draft. Different story this year boys. I hope not but this could get real ugly.

Anything can happen you are right. But since the new playoff format 1 8th seed has won the cup. That 8th seed was a highly talented underachieving LA Kings team that should have been higher in the standings. I want 8th seed because I think our guys need the experience and this years draft is soft. Last year the season was short, the draft was awesome and we played just good enough to miss out on the top forwards. The good news is that Ristolainen (who was the obvious choice at 8 really) also came with Zadorov who should not have dropped.

As for this season. I don't think it is going to be that ugly actually. I think we will be in most games and hitting the 8th spot is a possibility. I don't see us tanking the entire season because we are better this year than last. We may miss out on drafting in the top 5 or making the playoffs but this year we are heading the correct direction finally.

I do agree with most of your points. I think I'd also like to change my answer to making the playoffs as it would mean more to the young guys, even if Darcy then decides to lose Vanek and Miller for nothing. However, you keep mentioning this weak draft class for next year and I think it's WAY to early to be saying that. Does there appear to be a Crosby at this point? No. But I don't think you can say on September 24th, 2013 that in June of 2014 there will be this huge drop after the first couple of prospects. The 5th overall pick may end up being a great player. The draft eligable kids are just too young to make a statement like that at this point IMO and many things can change. I could be wrong on this but I thought Drouin was ranked much lower than a concensus top 5 heading into the start of last year but I'm at work and can't look it up right now.

As it relates to this Sabres team...tank for the pick. This roster is still in transition. I want them to win a Cup, not add another patch to their boyscout uniform.

Plus, the organization, or, more specifically, the administration, needs to be humbled more...they need to suffer, too, to see how it feels (the bastards). They need to learn that fans have a breaking point and it is to be respected.

The breaking point is when you stop filling the arena and buying the merchandise. 18k booing fans has far less impact than 10k booing fans.

and I'd trade 100 #5 picks for one more Dave Hannan or Derek Plante 1st round OT goal.

Because this franchise is in desperate need of more exciting first round memories?

Do you realize how sad it is that many (most?) of the most famous plays in Buffalo Sabres history -- including Hannan, May Day, and Derek Plante -- took place in the first round of the playoffs?

Let's stop groveling for scraps and pretend like we're fans of a real live professional sports team that tries to win championships.

Playoffs. I watch Edmonton get good drafts and are going nowhere. They have a goalie that just might get them into the playoffs this season. We can revisit this issue at the half way point in the season. I am sure some minds will change in both directions. New seasons mean new hope. Last year all the Sabres did for me as a fan was aggravate and disappoint.

Thats the attitude this franchise needs. Good post.

I have to agree with this. The so called experts have been saying Edmonton is on the rise...well it's been one painfully slow rise. How many top 5 picks have they had lately?

I'd take a first round loss. Teach the young guys. If all the younger players see is failure and no playoffs, I don't think that teaches them much. Give a guy like Girgensons a taste of the playoffs, and the rise in competition that comes with it and he just keeps salivating to get back into it.

Egads, either people don't understand the premise of the thread, or this thread goes a long way in explaining why there's still a season ticket waiting list after so many years of mediocrity.

I really despise this attitude toward other fans.

ESPN predictions for the Sabres:

LeBrun: The rebuild continues: Miller and Vanek will be dealt and the Sabres will finish second from the bottom -- seventh -- in the Atlantic Division.

Burnside: Seventh in the Atlantic Division.

Custance: Eighth in the Atlantic Division.

Melrose: Eighth in the Atlantic Division.

Strang: Eighth in the Atlantic Division.

That's a top 5 pick folks.

I don't think we're bad enough for a top-5 pick as long as Miller and Vanek are around, not to mention if Myers has a big year. I also don't think we're good enough to accomplish much of anything. Here's to another #12 pick.
