Sabres history set to Billy Joel's music; help me put it over the top!

I rewrote Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" with Sabres history in mind. I want it to be nostalgic, fun, educational and even a little challenging. It's an homage both to the team and to Joel. There's no angle or agenda in it. There's a little editorial statement at the end, but I believe it speaks for the vast majority of fans — we're frustrated. If anything detracts from the goal of the song, I want to hear that opinion.

If you can write a better word, line or stanza and stay in chronological order and follow the rhyming scheme, I want to see it. If some historical reference is wrong or inexcusably missing, let me know. Right off the top, the last two lines of the chorus could be much better, and "Dave Hannan" doesn't seem to work at all. (I'd recommend reading the lyrics while listening to the song.)

I call this Word Soduko. I found it nigh on impossible to even get this far, so pardon the cheap rhymes like nose and nachos! Can you do better?!

Thanks to Ghost for a couple of very good lines and much help and X. and SwampD for suggested lyrics/topics. One of our esteemed posters who probably doesn't want to be identified yet may take a stab at producing it. We probably need more musical expertise, like, oh, someone who can sing.

I've taken it this far. I want you all to perfect it and somehow take it all the way to YouTube.

Spectacular, my friend.

Whatever. :) Tell me what's wrong with it.

Anybody else think the Elvis mention was someone other than Perreault?

The only thing I can think of is adding some reference to the logo changes... Maybe it could be worked into the different choruses to keep it chronological without changing your existing verses? Something like:

We've always loved the Sabres

Change to black and red

And angry goat head

We've always loved the Sabres

No we didn't hide it

We could never fight it

We've always loved the Sabres

Back to blue and gold

Trump's hairpiece we're sold

We've always loved the Sabres

Though we didn't like it

We still chose to buy it

Then again, might not fit in order given where they fall in the song... just an idea.

Maybe somewhere a "Drury 7.7"

Best moment for me.

Anybody like this idea? Who else? Who else? :)

Very creative. Something to think about for sure. Thanks!

The Drury goal was all-time -- it probably belongs in the franchise's top-20 moments and, so, in the song. And if you're including that one, maybe Max's slide? Because that was pretty good, too.

I also like Dork's notion on fiddling with the choruses to reference logo changes.

EDIT: Wait. I'm lost. Shoot. Drury 7.7 was, what? Not "Who else"? Was that when he scored in the OT against Ott'wa?

Rangers, I think... I was thinking Pommer's SH goal against Ottawa was one of my favorites, though. :)

While I hate the Billy Joel song, it works with what you have done. Having it tweaked and done as a professional video would make a cool arena presentation. They could do a great video montage out of that.

I think it would be great pregame video too. But some of the references, as mild as they are, would make it a non-starter as far as the team is concerned. There's probably a copyright issue as well.

Therin lies the tweaking that I was referring to. It's a great idea to do with one of Joel's worst songs. What can you do with Piano Man, New York State of Mind, or Scenes From an Italian Restaurant. Now you'd have something (but We Didn't Start the Fire lends itself so well to this idea).

Sabres fans had had it already by the summer of 75? :) Don't even get me started on another song, but the Brenda and Eddie device would work well. A couple going through life as Sabres fans.

Never thought of "Fire" as his worst song.
