IKnowPhysics Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 Here's the breakdown: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/winners-losers-nbc-sports-2013-14-nhl-tv-161433287.html Teams that have more games than us (12); only four non-original-six teams: Boston (13), Chicago (17), Detroit (13), Rangers (16), Philly (19), Pittsburgh (18), St Louis (13), Washington (13) Teams that got the shaft (<6): All of Canada (6 games combined; Wininpeg, Calgary, Edmonton don't have any), Carolina (1), Colorado (3), Columbus (2), Dallas (5), Florida (1), Nashville (3), Islanders (4), Phoenix (2), Sharks (5), Tampa (3) So, out of 212 possible appearances, 16 teams account for only 35 of those. If you haven't already abandoned any ideas that TV isn't money driven, isn't east-coast biased, is governed by fairness, or guided by league standings, feel free to do so now.

It isn't East Coast biased. Take a look at what NBA teams get national coverage. But it certainly is money driven--and that's it.
IKnowPhysics Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 But it certainly is money driven--and that's it. "Well, allow me to retort," the east-coast bias is a result of the money-driven aspect because the networks want the programming on during prime time on the east coast, primarily due to higher ratings for those markets, during those times.
LGR4GM Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 I think most Canadian games are broadcast on CBC right? At least the local area? Also does anyone know anything about NHL Gamecenter pricing? I figure since I have a laptop and PS3 I should get Gamecenter.
IKnowPhysics Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 I think most Canadian games are broadcast on CBC right? At least the local area? Yes. Canadian games are broadcast nationally in Canada on CBC, TSN, and RDS, which is nice if you live in Canada or a border city. Local coverage is also broadcast.

Yes, I get it, but the same process is the reason why you see the Lakers on national TV every Christmas Day and at least one night per week. There's not a team that draws higher ratings, no matter what coast. Cf. Dallas Cowboys.
OverPowerYou Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 Can someone tell me when individual game tickets go on sale?
apuszczalowski Posted August 21, 2013 Report Posted August 21, 2013 Yes. Canadian games are broadcast nationally in Canada on CBC, TSN, and RDS, which is nice if you live in Canada or a border city. Local coverage is also broadcast. Most of the coverage on TSN & TSN2 is the feed from the NBCSN coverage. What really sucks is living in the Niagara area and not being able to get local coverage for the Sabres here on TV unless its on one of the major sports networks. You can live in Fort Erie, with a view accross the river of the top of the arena, but not be able to watch Sabres games on TV because they don't broadcast MSGs network over here. As for the comment about the bias to East Coast coverage, its basically because of the "Time Zone" issue. They want games that will be on prime time, most networks on the east coast switch to local feeds after 11. if your one of the networks, would you rather broadcast a game that starts in prime time on the East and in the late afternoon out west, or a game thats gonna be on in primetime in the West and too late for most people to stay up and watch in the east? As for the list of teams with less then 6, how many of those teams would the average casual fan want to watch anyways? Theres not much of a Demand for Blue Jackets hockey in Columbus, do you expect fans in Boston to want to tune in to see them play?
IKnowPhysics Posted August 21, 2013 Report Posted August 21, 2013 While we're on the topic of ratings, here's the data for the regional broadcasts. Despite being among the leagues lowest improvement in ratings (5th worst), we're still a ratings powerhouse (2nd highest in average rating, finally leapfrogged by PIttsburgh this year). Colorado was the only team that saw a decrease in ratings*, but they're far from the bottom in average ratings. Biggest el-oh-el: only 4000 households tune in on average for Panthers games on FS Panthers. *If there's a reason to expect the salary cap to go way up, it could be this. Only one team lost local ratings in season that started with a lockout. National ratings are way up as well, though I don't have that data in front of me.
MattPie Posted August 21, 2013 Report Posted August 21, 2013 Biggest el-oh-el: only 4000 households tune in on average for Panthers games on FS Panthers. I'd say the Rangers rating being up 200% this year to hit 0.55 is pretty funny too.
IKnowPhysics Posted August 21, 2013 Report Posted August 21, 2013 Islanders too; it's pretty clear that the Panthers had just beaten them last year in average ratings. Coincidentally, the ratings also explain why I become livid at the PT Ducks announcers: nobody watches them therefore they have a crappy broadcast therefore nobody watches them.
