Grigorenko has been MIA all game...

What a surprise. 3 months after showing that he belonged nowhere near the NHL, he is just another guy when scrimmaging against his lower rated teammates.

I'm a little surprised.

My take on the scrimmage:

1. Girgs looked very good, racked up a couple points and was involved in 4/6 Blue goals.

2. Grigs seemed unable to get many opportunities, Gold's D seemed only good when Ruhwedal and McNabb were out there thus he was sort tied up. Had a chance in the first 5 min but then was practically either unable to get the puck in Blue's zone or he was stuck in his own zone.

3. Zadorov made a couple mistakes early on but played very solid through the rest. But a few nice hits on guys too. Not to mention assisting the first two goals.

4. Blue's defense was quite a sight to see, McCabe looked very solid, stood up Goldies and play very solid defense. He was partnered with Risto who started slow but seemed to hold his own as the game progressed.

5. Pysyk, Ruhwedal, and McNabb were good but in descending order from Pysyk looking the best.

To be honest by how the game played out, Yellow looked like last year's Sabres in that they were constantly in their own zone and only Bailey and Compher ever made it into the Blue Zone with the exception of the occasional Griggy. Blue Team looked like the team we want to see, gritty yet offensively capable D corps, forwards who will back-check and play hard on the boards, and still have the skill to make the other team look bad at times.

6. Bailey made an amazing pass to Compher who made Petersen look silly. Plus Bailey's goal was real smooth.

I agree completely. But if you entered into a detailed conversation with said passionate model-builder then his or her passion would become very evident. Likewise, if I were to get into a hockey discussion (or view one arbitrarily) with a hockey player who just got drafted onto an NHL team then I would hope to see some passion in his body language and / or verbal tone.

Yeh, I am excited to see these kids... along with Ott and Tropp.

I don't know he lacks passion. As I indicated in my previous post, I am concerned that he may lack passion based upon his draft day reaction / demeanor.

Maybe it is somewhat difficult for a teenager from another country who isn't fluent in our language to express the "passion" people might be looking for?

So last season's final game against the Islanders was a mirage?

Seems like there is contradictory statements after that post. I'd still like clarification.

One game can easily be a mirage.

We'll see what Grigorenko can do over 82 games this season but I think it's safe to feel skeptical about his "elite prospect" status.

Inconsistent play is the norm for young players as they develop. I also expect to see that from Grigs, Girgs, Armia, or any other young player with limited NHL experience. Can't expect too much too soon.

True, but my skepticism is mainly with regard to his "elite prospect" status. I'm a lot more wary about penciling him in as a future point per game no.1 center star for us.

It's weird that when people talk about Grigorenko, the only possible futures are [a] Marek Zagrapan part 2 or future superstar no.1 center. Plenty of room in between those two outcomes. What if he's just a 60 point per year player? What if he's another Derek Roy? You couldn't say he'd be a bad pick but he wouldn't be the player we've all been clamoring for for years either.

Where was tropp ? Didn't see it mentioned

Probably too old for the prospect camp (he's 23 now) and possibly doing his own off-season thing with a focus on his repaired knee.

I think you put too much stock into a scrimmage. Just like people going gaga for Girgensons (cough Matt Coller cough) are putting too much stock in a handful of games.

If he turns into a 60pt/yr player it would probably justify his draft position. That's probably not unusual for a player drafted early teens in most years. (OK, twelve but who's counting :P ).

I'm doing my damndest to not set my expectations too high for Grigs. If he develops into a solid #2 line center I think we did OK.

That's pretty much my point. He can turn into a good player but still leave a big hole in our rebuild plan (which, apparently, exists) where we were hoping for a star no.1 center.

Since last June I haven't seen any reason why he can't be a good NHL player but I also haven't seen anything to make me think he's going to be a star in the league.

I can get on board with that assessment.

I'm not sure about the "big hole" though. I don't think the team needs a star center to be a Cup contender. They do need 3 solid centers though, and a 4th that has NHL skill level. I think the team is headed in that direction.

I'm not worried about center. I am at a point right now where I believe the holes in our prospects are almost solely at RW. We have Armia and........... well, we have Armia. D seems like it has enough talent that a solid 4 or 5 should shake out, and LW seems well stocked too. As long as our centers develop into NHL capable players we are left with questions at RW and maybe goal. That isn't too tall a list to expect it to be filled via free agency or trade when the time comes.

When the time comes......

This. A combination of high pre-draft rankings and a fanbase desperate for a star centre are going to make this kid a victim of expectations.

So What you are telling me is Zadorov was effective at shutting him down and Lepowski was ineffective at getting him a good break out?

HIGHLIGHTS!!!!!!

His channel has a bunch from tonight.

Awesome, thanks for the videos

I don't know if it was ever settled, but Zadorov seems to be great on his feet. I've watched all the OHL highlights I could get my hands on of him, and there's a ton of his streaking down the wing to set up some goals and a few of him just contributing offensively because of his feet.

My two cents as I was there is that the guys that impressed me were Gergs, Zadorov, Bailey and Kea.

Kea who nobody seems to mention, strikes me as a bigger Kaleta. I noticed and liked him.

Gergs acted like he is the man. He will be fun. Think Wendel Clark for us 45+ people. he is the real deal.

Zadorov looked like he is going to mold his game after Scott Stevens. Um, I'm ok with that!

Bailey was the surprise to me. Seemed to be NHL ready. Although playing with John Scott wont help him he has NHL talent. Hits, scores etc lets hope he doesn't play with John Scott.

Biggest disappointment for me was Grigs. Maybe cause I read idiot Harringtons column that day but I do agree with it. Grigs needed to show himself as a man amongst boys. He didn't and was as others have said almost like MIA. Not cool. But then I remind myself he is only a kid and I am going to give him time to earn his draft position pick.

Secondary disappointment, Risto. Zadorov looks much better and we could have taken the stud winger that Dallas took.

Course, this is all said with a grain a of salt.
