He also said that playing in Rochester would be good for him and he wouldn't mind playing there to learn the NA game. Nice selective quote there. :)

It's all about the TPS contract, not what I quoted. :nana: I'm hoping he's good enough out of the gate to stay in the NHL.

The interviews with Risto have put me a bit more at ease. I was not all that impressed with his lack of positive emotion during his drafting announcement. I thought he looked bummed. But now it is very clear that this kid is just "like" that. He doesn't seem all that excitable either way. Let's hope he can show some passion on the ice at least.

Stephon Gilmore looked like somebody shot his dog when the Bills drafted him, but he loves it here.

If that stoicism translates to calmness on the ice, this kid will go places as a defenseman.

I have a bunch of pics, but here's a teaser of Girgs putting a sick move on Knapp:

Unfortunately, it caught the butt of Knapp's stick, then hit the crossbar.

Agreed ... I guess I'm just a little worried about lack of passion on a team that already seems to care very little.

People who are passionate about building model planes and model cars wouldn't seem like it by watching them in action.

Gerbe had a lot of passion... Didn't really work out for him. Sometimes the quietest guys have a whole lot of passion. Just wait for Zemgus and Johan Larsson to hit the ice. They've got quite a bit of passion.

"I'm not disappointed if I play there (Rochester, AHL) I think it can help me more, then I know how to play hockey (In NA). Finland a good place for me to play hockey too... every choice I think is good for me and it doesn't matter."

- Ristolainen on AHL or FIN

I will say that is sounds as if Ristolainen will be in Finland this summer training but it sounds as if Zadorov after a 2-3week trip home will then be returning to Buffalo in early August to keep training... I think Risto will be a solid 2/3 guy and coveted by many, I think Zadorov can become an All-Star

How do you know he lacks passion? Have you seen him play?

Probably not.

Also there was some talk at some point about how Grigorenko's locker was moved to next to Ott's because the kid needed to learn work ethic etc... I am stealing this from a Buffalo news article, "No coincidence the Sabres moved Grigorenko’s locker last year right next to Ott’s, in the spot formerly occupied by Jason Pominville. Leino is in that corner of the room, too." Seems that maybe they wanted him to spend more time with Ott and eventually Leino for chemistry reasons and Work Ethic was more of a tertiary concern. Always 2 sides to a coin. Also you should read the article because it discusses how Grigs has been here all summer and plans to be here all summer working.

ps. Zadorov and Makarov being on this team with Grigorenko... gives me hope.

I agree completely. But if you entered into a detailed conversation with said passionate model-builder then his or her passion would become very evident. Likewise, if I were to get into a hockey discussion (or view one arbitrarily) with a hockey player who just got drafted onto an NHL team then I would hope to see some passion in his body language and / or verbal tone.

Yeh, I am excited to see these kids... along with Ott and Tropp.

I don't know he lacks passion. As I indicated in my previous post, I am concerned that he may lack passion based upon his draft day reaction / demeanor.

Maybe it is lack of passion, but maybe it is just the poise and advanced maturity of a young man who has been playing in a competitive men's league and grew up in a different culture. You have to imagine every player who gets drafted is going to be pumped full of nervous energy and excitement, and I'd prefer a defenseman to have ice in his veins and take things in stride. I think we're both probably putting too much weight into under five minutes of video from a single day, though.

More than anything, it's his Scandinavian cultural influence. And as you pointed out, that temperament will serve him well as a defensemen in the NHL.

GO SABRES!!!
